Its the biggest shark and can reach as long as 41.5 feet, and these amazing creatures are not only the biggest sharks, they are also the biggest fish of any kind. Whale sharks have a lifespan(寿命) of 70 years on average, and they spend their days gently swimming in the warm and tropical oceans.Their teeth are the size of match heads, and while their jaws could be powerful, they have never tended to attack humans. Their teeth play no role in eating, as plankton(浮游生物) does not need to be chewed. They are to be found in numbers in the warmer oceans and they prefer the deep waters of the open oceans.Several times a year they gather together in certain spots where plankton is plentiful. Those areas are all within a 30north or south latitude (纬度) from equator. Sadly, whale sharks are targeted by commercial fisheries at those spots. How easy it must be for the fishermen to catch those beautiful creatures who can only swim at 3.5 miles per hour! So great a loss have they suffered that whale sharks are now listed as one of the endangered species. Measures have been taken by some countries to protect the whale shark from extinction(灭绝)The Philippines and India have all banned the fishing, selling, importing and exporting of whale sharks for commercial purposes. However, the law does not seem to be effective because the hunting and killing are still going on today, especially in the Philippines. Each whale shark can fetch around $21,000. In parts of Asia they are known as the “money shark”The mighty dollar wins again at great cost to our habitat, we will not know what we have lost until we have lost it forever. 1Which of the following about whale sharks is NOT true?A. They usually live a life of 70 years on average.B. They can reach as long as 41.5 feet.C. They depend on their teeth to harvest their food.D. They live in the deep waters of the warmer oceans. 2Which of the following do whale sharks feed on?A. Big fish.B. Plankton.C. Smaller sharks of the same kind.D. Seals. 3So many whale sharks have been caught mainly because _.A. they swim at a slow speedB. they are surrounded by so many fishermenC. they often gather together in great numbersD. they never tend to attack humans答案:A细节理解题。 4It is implied in the passage that_.A. whale sharks are not the biggest sharks but the biggest fishB. whale sharks will be extinct even if they are protectedC. all the countries should take steps to protect whale sharksD. the huge profit is to blame for the decreasing of whale sharks答案:D推理判断题。 BThe more money a married woman earns, the less housework she will do regardless of how much her husband earns, according to a new study.A researcher at the University of Massachusetts Amherst found that more salaries equal less cooking and cleaning in a study of 918 women in doubleincome families. Married women who made $40,000 or more a year spent nearly one hour less on housework per day than women who earned $10,000 or less, according to the findings based on data from the National Survey of Families and Households.“As to this_point,_people have thought that the important thing was how much money a woman makes compared to her husband. But now, they believe the only thing that matters is how much money she earns,” said Sanjiv Gupta, the author of the study. The study, which was published in the Journal of Marriage and Family, showed that for every $7,500 in annual income a married woman earned, she performed one hour less of housework each week. Gupta confirmed the link between money and domestic work in a separate study using data on nearly 2,000 couples in the United States and Europe. The average earnings of American women increased by $6,200 between 1965 and 1995, according to the US Census Bureau. During that time, the amount of time married women spent on weekly housework fell by 14.6 hours.Since the husbands earnings have no effect on the amount of housework a woman does, the finding suggests women are using their own money to reduce their domestic workloads such as ordering takeout food instead of cooking and hiring cleaners instead of doing it themselves. 5We can learn from Paragraph 1 that a married woman _.A. does less housework if she earns more moneyB. does more housework if she earns more moneyC. does less housework if her husband earns more moneyD. does more housework if her husband earns less money答案:A细节理解题。 6Paragraph 3 mainly tells us that_.A. the important thing was the income gap between a husband and a wifeB. the only thing that matters is how much money a woman earnsC. the wife makes more money than the husbandD. peoples opinions are changing on womens earnings答案:D推理判断题。 7The underlined words “this point“ in Paragraph 3 refer to the fact_.A. that more salaries equal less houseworkB. that more salaries equal more houseworkC. that some married women earn $40,000 or moreD. that some married
