He was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London and one of the greatest celebrities of his days. Wilde is regarded as one of the most proficient and versatile writers of the English language.,Brief Introduction of Oscar Wilde,Some famous quotations of Wildes,I have nothing to declare except my genius. Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes. A man can be happy with any woman as long as he does not love her. One should always be in love. That is the reason why one should never marry. Art is the most intense form of individualism that the world has known.,The Happy Prince and Other Tales (sometimes called The Happy Prince and Other Stories) is a collection of stories for children by Oscar Wilde first published in May 1888. It contains five stories, “The Happy Prince“, “The Nightingale and the Rose“, “The Selfish Giant“, “The Devoted Friend“, and “The Remarkable Rocket“. It is most famous for its title story, “The Happy Prince“.,The Happy Prince is a story of a metal statue that makes friends with a migratory bird to bring happiness to a city. The friendship is sparked when a swallow decides to sleep at the feet of a metal statue. Just as the swallow was about to sleep, it was awoken by several drops of water, which turned out to be the tears of the statue. The Happy Prince was crying because he could see the misery of his own city. He asked the swallow to be his messenger and instructed him to take sapphires and jewels from his statue to give to townspeople suffering from misfortune.,The Happy Prince,In China, the first translation of his fairy tales is Zhou Zuorens Anlei Wangzi,which is Produced in the “May Fourth” period, with the aim of infusing Westem thoughts and changing the society for the better. Zhou mainly adopts wen yan language style and intentional literal translation. In the post-liberation period, Ba Jins.Kuaile Wangzi Ji collected Wildes all nine fairy tales,and uses it as a spiritual weapon to fight against evilside of western capitalism. His language is simple, colloquial, and retains rhetorical expressions for children. In terms of sentence structures, it has the feature of Europeanization.,The Three Translations,In contemporary times,Chinas publishing market is flourishing, and Childrens reading material takes up diversified and systematic characteristies. Gao Yanzhengs publishing purpose is to raise young English learners study interest and improve their social and cultural accomplishments.,The Three Translations,Zhou Zuoren (16 January 1885-6 May 1967) was a Chinese writer, primarily known as an essayist and a translator. He was the younger brother of Lu Xun (Zhou Shuren), the second of three brothers. He was particularly interested in folklore, anthropology and natural history. As a prolific translator, he produced many translations of classical Greek and classical Japanese literatures. Most of his translations are pioneering.,Zhou Zuoren,(1904.11.25.2005.10.17 ),Ba Jin,Ba Jins Career as a Translator and Writer,Ba Jin is a prolific writer as well as a productive translator, the latter of which, however, is not so that widely known by the readers as the former is. Ba Jin is the rare translator who devoted a lot to the translation of childrens literature.These translations not only are valuable for children, but also are useful for the writers of childrens literature.,1.He had met her early in the spring as he was flying down the river after a big yellow moth, and had been so attracted by her slender waist that he had stopped to talk to her. 周译:一日春时、方逐黄色巨蛾、飞经水次、与苇邂 逅、爱其纤腰、止与问讯。 巴译:他还是在早春遇见她的,那时他正沿着河顺 流飞去,追一只黄色飞蛾,她的细腰很引起他的注意,他 便站住同她谈起话来。 高译:早在春天的时候,他为了追逐一只黄色的飞 蛾,顺河流而下,与她相遇了。 他被她的纤纤细腰给迷住 了,便停下来与她攀谈起来。,Examples 1,Analysis 1,这三个译本都是按原文直译的, 周译的字数最少, 也是最难理解的,比如其中的“飞经水次”、“与苇邂逅”、 “止与问询”这些表述。 高译是最适合儿童阅读的,他的 语言最生动形象。 比如“他被她的纤纤细腰给迷住了”, 其他两个译本分别是“爱其纤腰”和“她的细腰很引起他的注 意”,高译用了“迷住了”、“纤纤细腰”,这样的表述更容 易在读者面前呈现出栩栩如生的画面。 而巴译“引起注 意”意思就不是很明确,为什么会引起注意可能儿童读 者也不是很清楚。,2.In the daytime I played with my companions in the garden, and in the evening I led the dance in the great hall. Round the garden ran a very lofty wall, but I never cared to ask what lay beyond it, everything about me was so beautiful. 周译:昼游苑中、夕就广殿、歌舞相乐、苑外围以崇 墉、吾但见是中之美、更无暇问此外何有矣。 巴译:白天有人陪我在花园里玩,晚上我又在大厅 里领头跳舞。 花园的四周围着一道高墙,我就从没有想 到去问人墙外是什么样的景象,我眼前的一切都非常完 美。 高译:白天我和伙伴们在花园里玩耍,夜晚我在大 厅里带头跳舞。 花园的周围有一道很高很高的墙,但我 从来就没想过要去了解墙外的世界,因为我周围的一切 是那么的美。,Examples 2,周译仍然是最简洁的,“昼”、“夕”、“围以崇墉”、“无 暇”等等这些表述语言优美,但是深奥不易读懂,也不能 引起普通读者的共鸣。 巴译语言朴实简单,高译的语言 还是最容易让儿童接受的,巴译“花园的四周围着一道 高墙”,高译“花园的周围有一道很高很高的墙”,高译中 用到了“很高很高”这种表述,是很符合儿童语言习惯 的,更容易被儿童所接受。,Analysis 2,The streets looked as if they were made of silver, they were so bright and glistening; long icicles like crystal daggers hung down from the eaves of the houses, everybody went about in furs, and the little boys wore scarlet caps and skated on the ice. 周译:道路皆冻、皓然作银色。 人家檐下冰筋下垂、 如水精匕首。 行人咸御重裘、儿童戴绛巾、群走冰上。 巴译:街道仿佛是用银子筑成的,它们是那么亮,那 么光辉,长长的冰柱像水晶的短剑似的悬挂在檐前,每个 行人都穿着皮衣,小孩们也戴上红帽子溜冰取乐。 高译:街道看上去好像是银子铺成的,亮晶晶的,闪 闪发光。 长长的冰柱就像一把把水晶短剑,从屋檐上垂 下来。 每个行人都穿着皮衣,小孩子们也戴上了猩红色 的小帽在溜冰。,Examples 3,巴译和高译都将这段话处理成了三句,而周译却只 用了一句话。 其实这三句话中每句话都描述的一个不同 的主体,第一句表述的街道,第二句屋檐,第三句人。 所,以分开处理要更加合适,一目了然,适合大众阅读。 高译 中还用到了叠词“亮晶晶”、“闪闪发光”让文章更加有趣 味,对场景的描写也跃然纸上。,Analysis 3,So the swallow picked out the great rubyfrom the princes sword, and flew away with it in his beak over the roofs of the town. . 周译:燕取琼瑶、衔之咮间、越屋而去。 巴译: 燕子便从王子的剑柄上啄下了那块大红宝 石,衔着它飞起来,飞过栉比的屋顶,向远处飞去了. 高译:燕子于是从王子的剑柄上啄下了那块大红宝 石,衔着它飞了起来。 它飞过城里那一排排的屋顶,向远 处飞去了。,Examples 4,翻译“over the roofs”时,周译用的是“越屋而去”,并 没有体现出“roofs”这个附属概念。 巴译则使用了“栉比” 一词,没有身后的中国古文基础的人也很难明白这个栉 比到底是什么意思。 而高译使用的是“一排排”简单明 了,也将原文的意思准确的表达了出来,适合儿童阅读。,Analysis 4,From the perspective of language style, these three represeniative Chineset ranslations of Osear Wilde fairytales show the change from Wen yan langua
