If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesnt solve anything. Communication begins with the concerns (关心) of another. It means that you cant just come home from school, go up to your room and take no notice to anyone. Even if you just say “Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing. If you looked up the word “communication” in a dictionary, it would say “the exchange of ideas, the conveyance (表达) of information, correspondence (通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To keep a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if its just by writing a note. When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that youll listen to what they have to say, and ask them politely to listen to you. Shouting or walking away only makes the situation worse. Here is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didnt feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, but when Sophie explained why she was late, they werent as mad and let it go. Communication is the key here. If Sophies parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble. Communication isnt a one-way matter: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophies, telling the other person how you feel listening is the key to communication. ( )61. Are you good at listening?CEvery day as I drove through the town, I saw a one-legged man going through the dustbins (垃圾桶) next to McDonalds looking for food. It was only a month before Christmas, starting to get cold and I could not help thinking about him.So I bought a brush, a pack of cigarettes, cans of fish, and then I added a blanket and a sweatshirts. I made a box up like a present and went in search of this man. I saw him hobble away from the dustbin. I pulled over, took the box and went up to him. I said, “I would like to give you a Christmas present, there are some food items in here and some things you might be able to use.”He sidestepped around me and said, “No, thank you. I just had lunch. I dont need anything.” Then he hobbled on down the sidewalk, leaving me standing there in tears. I was not crying for myself but for him because what I had done took away his dignity (尊严).A few years later I was able to volunteer in St. Anthonys Dining Room in San Francisco where 1,500 to 2,000 homeless people were fed every day. These people had to stand in line for up to 6 hours to receive the only food they would get to support themselves for a 24-hour period. We took one tray of food at a time, and treated them as if they were in a restaurant ordering a meal they were paying for. And when we took our break, we would sit down with one of them and talk and share our food with someone if we had too much. From my own experience, I learned a great lesson. Accepting help is sometimes harder than giving it. Someone said to me at one time, “Please let me help you; dont take away my blessing (祝福).” And in that statement lies the whole truth of Paying It Forward. I have to accept so I can pass it on!( )66.
