The May Fourth MovementThe imperialists stepped up their aggression against China after the World Warand China suffered from the serious national crisis as the Northern Warlords government restored to compromise and surrender externally and cruelly oppress people internally .The failure of Chinese diplomacy at the Paris peace conference in 1919 touched off great indignation of the Chinese. On May 4 , over 3000 students in Beijing gathered in front of Tiananmen . They made a demonstration, shouting loudly slogans, as striving for sovereignty externally, punishing national traitors at home and abolishing the Twenty-one Demands and so on. They required to punishing traitors, who were Cao Rulin,Lu Zongyu,and Zhang Zongxiang , set fire to the Cao residence and beat Zhang Zongxiang up. The Northern Warlords government dispatched military force to oppress, and arrested more than 30 students. On June 3，students in Beijing organized speech teams to make large-scale propaganda so the Northern warlords government strengthened to oppress them and caught over 170 students. After June 3,the patriotic May Fourth Movement mainly participated in by young students developed into nationwide revolutionary movement participated in by the proletariat, the petty bourgeoisie and the national-capitalist class. The proletariat was main force of the movement。With workers in Shanghai, Tangshan, Chang Xindian, and Jiujiang going to strike successively, the Chinese working class boarded the political stage as an enlightened and independent political force and demonstrated his great power. Under the pressure of the anti-imperial and patriotic struggle of the whole nation, the Northern Warlords government was forced to release those arrested students and dismissed three traitors positions and refused to sign on the peace treaty for Germany. The struggle of anti-imperialism and anti-feudalism won an initial victory. The May 4th Movement was a thorough and uncompromising anti-imperial and anti-feudal revolutionary movement.
