Following a review of the current scholarship on the issue, it traces the historical development of three different conceptions of the subjective in three competing paradigms of translation studies, and goes on to explore the implications which the intersubjective turn in contemporary philosophy holds for the theorization of translation. Emphasizing the numerous constructive roles which the new philosophical thinking could play in the on-going re-conceptualization of translation, the author maintains in conclusion that the future of translation studies as a field may lie precisely in making a similar shift from a subjectivity- to an intersubjectivity-based mode of thinking.
