An Analysis of ElisaHer dreamElisa took care of her chrysanthemums with heart and soul. When she wanted to send her flower to a tinker, she even kneeled on the ground dug dirt with hands. She admired mens free lifestyle. Because they can go everywhere they want. But to a woman staying in her home was the only right thing to do. Elisa needed freedom. So she putted her dream on the chrysanthemums and hoped the flower could follow the tinker go everywhere. Finally, her dream was broken with seeing her flower lying on the ground. She wanted to see the world through the chrysanthemums. Unfortunately, the flowers fate was hers. Her femininityAt first, Elisas femininity was covered in heart, deeply. Her private garden was one of ways to show she still keeping femininity.Although she wore mans cloth, she still loved beautiful things.Although she devoted to her family, she still built a small world for herself. When she clearly realized her femininity, she tried to make up like a real woman. Her marriageHer husband thought planting flowers was less worthwhile than planting fruit trees. He couldnt understand why she wanted to plant that useless thing. He praised his wife with “nice”. In his opinion, nice is strong. He couldnt understand what was a woman really needed. He even didnt notice that his wife liked reading. He didnt try to know about her and always ignored her.He was concentrated on money. He was busy with business. The only reason he wanted to have a big dinner with his wife was having earned a bid deal of money. Her marriage just continued without love, without inter-understanding, without enjoying their marriage life.At last, she chose to stay in her home giving up the dream of freedom. So she had to work in farm wearing mans cloth like a strong woman. She had to maintain her marriage without love. But every choice she made was forced by society. We shouldnt blame her too much. Alisas tragedy didnt just belong to herself. The fate of chrysanthemums belonged to every woman in that era.During the Second Industry Revolution, all of the people admired productive forces. Mostly, man had more production capacity than woman. So the society was not equal and couldnt attach importance to women. In return, every Industry Revolutions coming always was companied with Feminism Revolution. Women were liberated form labor working, so consciously realized their society position step by step. England was advanced than other countries on Industry Revolution, so it was the first country to appear Feminism. Feminism was widespread to America with the Second Industry Revolutions spreading. Probably John Steinbeck was affected by Feminism, so he wrote the fiction to record that era. He didnt create the fiction as a comedy but a tragedy. He saw clearly how the society to press women. Elisa was just a typical woman at that time. Every woman could be called Elisa, every husband was Henry. So many women chose to keep silent and to tolerate. He showed his sympathy to women. He didnt create a woman who changed her fate. Through this way, he wanted to express the Feminism Revolution and the equal men and women still had a long way to cover. This was sorrow of an era. It needed the whole societys attention and continuously hard-working.Until now, although there are some unequal things between men and women, John Steinbeck should be happy seeing human beings have made a big progress.
