Embut there is plenty of colours, where do you think we should get started. Any ideas?F: Well, since we are talking about colours, why not begin with the very word “colour”. M: Good idea! In English, the word “colour” has more to say than merely being the general name of colours.F: Yep. For example, redness of the face can be called colour, which is usually regarded as a sign of good health. 在英语里, “colour” 可以表示一个人的脸色、气色。 至于气色的好坏，则可以用 “little” 和 “high” 来形容。 “has very little colour”, “气色很差”; “has a high colour”, “气色不错”。 M: There are also other interesting expressions related to colour. 比如，你想形容某人以优异的成绩通过考试，那就可以说 “She passed the exam with flying colours”。 F: 此外，“颜色鲜艳的”是 “colourful”; “苍白无色的”是 “colourless”. 形容颜色深，可以用 “dark” or “deep”; 形容颜色浅则可以用 “light” or “pale”. For instance, “pale green”, “淡绿色”.M: Words that have a very close relationship with “colour” are “hue”, “tint”, “shade”, and “tone”. Though these four words describe fairly simple colour concepts in reality they are often misused. F: Ah, it sounds like you know much about them. Im ready to hear more.M: I just did a little research. Hue is what we usually mean when we ask “what colour is that?” For example, when we talk about colours that are red, green, and blue, we are talking about hue.F: What about the other three?M: In distinguishing “tint”, “shade” and “tone”, the important thing is to remember how the colour varies from its original hue. If white is added to a colour, the lighter version is called a “tint”, such as “a tint of red in the sky”, “一抹淡淡的霞光”. If the colour is made darker by adding black, the result is called a “shade”, like “a deeper shade of blue”, “一种深蓝色”. If any gray is added, each gradation gives you a different “tone”. F: Wow, this is something interesting. Thank you, Mr. Knowledgeable.M: My pleasure.F: When come to specific colours, the first word comes to my mind is “rainbow”. As we all know from childhood, every rainbow has seven colours: red, orange, yellow, green, indigo, blue and violet. M: Among the seven rainbow colours, we can find primary colours for both light and paint. “primary colour”, “原色”又名 “基本色”. 红、黄、蓝是颜料中的基本色，红、绿、蓝则是光的基本色。F: And when mixed together in different ways, primary colours can be used to make any other colours which are called secondary colours. “Secondary colour”, “合成色” . 通过混合基本色，可以获得其他各种颜色, 这些颜色就被称为“合成色”。In this beautiful world, secondary colours are countless.M: Exactly. Just take the family of “red” for example, there are “crimson”, “深红色”; “scarlet”, “猩红色”; “vermilion”, “朱红色”; “magenta”, “紫红色”; “maroon”, “褐红色” and many other unnamable ones.F: Indeed, I should say, the world is in all colours of the rainbow. “In all colours of the rainbow”, “五彩缤纷”. There are “blue-collar workers”, “蓝领”; “blue book”, “蓝皮书”; “blue blood”, “名门望族”; “blue ribbon”, “最高荣誉”; and “blue-brick universities”, “蓝砖大学”, which refer to world famous universities like Oxford and Cambridge.M: Good job! By the way, the blue-collar worker you just mentioned is one of five colour-collar workers. Can you tell the other four?F: A piece of cake. The other four are “gray-collar workers”, “灰领”, 指服务性行业的职员; “pink-collar workers”, “粉领”, 指职业女性群体; “golden-collar workers”, “金领” 指既有专业技能又懂管理和营销的人才; and “white-collar workers”, “白领”, which is the one we are most familiar with.M: So far all weve talked about are colours in English. In Chinese colours are also abundant with meanings, especially the Chinese character “红”.F: Yep. But, due to cultural differences, in some cases, the Chinese character “红” has nothing to do with “red” when translated into English. For instance, “红糖” is “brown sugar”, not “red sugar”.M: Totally agree. Other vivid examples are: “红茶”, “black tea”; “红榜”, “honor roll”; “红豆”, “love pea”; “红运”, “good luck”; “红事”, “wedding” etc . They affect us in numerous ways, both mentally and physically. A strong red colour has been shown to raise the blood pressure, while a blue colour has a calming effect. M: So in todays Worlds Kaleidoscope, we are going to have a glimpse of the role played by colours in our life. Colours and WeightF: Yuanxuan, have you ever heard that colours have weight?M: Really? How can it be? You must be kidding. F: Hey, Im telling the truth. In terms of colours themselves, they do have nothing to do with weight. But some colours have the ability to make objects heavier while others can make objects lighter than they really are. M: Any evidence?F: If there are two boxes that are totally the same except one is blue and the other is black. Which box do you think looks heavier, the blue one or the black one?M: Let me seethe black one? Oh, wait a minute. I think I got it. Black boxes look heavier than blue ones; and blue boxes look heavier than yellow ones. Am I right?F: Yep! In our life, we can easily find applications of this tricky phenomenon. For instance, ever since it was invented, large safe boxes are in black or dark green. This is because black and dark green often send out a message of heaviness, and thus they make people feel those big safe boxes are irremovable. M: That sounds interesting. Ive never noticed before.F: Indeed. This phenomenon is interesting and also arouses many peoples curiosity. Some experts even carry out experiments on the relationship between colours and the sense of weight. They finally find out that a black box looks almost two times heavier than a white one. That is really amazing.Colours and Concept of TimeM: Colours are indeed quite naughty. They not only make us confused with the sense of weight but also the concept of time. It is said that time seems to pass faster in a blue room than in a red room.F: Exactly. To make it easier for understanding let me explain it this way: if a person is in a red room, 40 minutes will be as long as one hour for him, whereas in a blue room, he will feel that one hour is as short as 40 minutes.M: As a result, fast food restaurants, which are decorated in red or orange, are not ideal places to wait for friends. Because the red scheme（配色方案） there will make you become impatient easily. If you have to wait for friends, cafes in cold colours will be a choice place.F: Another example is the meeting room of companies. In modern society, company meetings, especially those long and boring ones, are headaches to every employee. In order to make meetings more comfortable for employees, companies can try blue as the basic colour for their meeting rooms. M: With blue curtains, blue chairs or blue notebooks, time seems to go faster. Besides, the tranquil colour blue can cause human bodies to produce calming chemicals and make people more relaxed. F: By the way, if a speaker wants to gain attention in a meeting, hed better wear a red tie as red often gets noticed easier. But it is not necessary for him to have a red shirt, because too much red will distract his audiences attention.Colours and Other TricksM: In Word Club, we have mentioned “primary colours” and “secondary colours”. Actually, according to different standards of classification, there are many other pairs of colours. Among them is the pair of “expansive colour”（膨胀色） and “contracting colour”（收缩色）.F: Just as their names indicate, expansive colours make things fatter and bigger whereas contracting colours make objects thinner and smaller.M: Warm colours like red, orange and yellow are in the family of expansive colour. Cold colours like blue, violet and black belong to the branch of contracting colour.F: The charming of expansive and contracting colours is especially made good use of in clothing. For instance, the colour black which can make people appear slimmer is quite popular among females. M: Another pair of colours that are similar to expansive and contracting colours are “advancing colours” （前进色）and “receding colours” （后退色）. Generally speaking, warm colours are advancing colours and cold colours are receding colours.F: The secret of this pair of colours is that the former often seems to move forward in readers vision while the latter seems to move back in vision.M: A wise use of this particular colour effect in our life is the advertising board. Most advertising boards are in advancing colours like red, orange or yellow. On one hand, these colours can easily strike the eye.
