A record of scheduled inspections should remain with the dies and/or be supplied to supervisory personnel responsible for the dies. Though recommendations call for at least one inspection a month, the inspection frequency should be based on the amount of use, ambient working conditions, operator training and skill, and established company standards. Tyco Electronics does not manufacture or market these gages. Though recommendations call for at least one inspection a month, frequency of inspection depends upon the following:1. The care, amount of use, and handling of the hand tool.2. The presence of abnormal amounts of dust and dirt.3. The degree of operator skill.4. The hand tool should be immersed (handles partially closed) in a reliable commercial degreasing compound to remove accumulated dirt, grease, and foreign matter. When degreasing compound is not available, tool may be wiped clean with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do NOT use hard or abrasive objects that could damage the tool. Crimp Code (1 Dot Shown) (Refer to Figure 2)2. Make certain that the retaining pins are in place and that they are secured with retaining rings.3. All pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces should be protected with a THIN coat of any good SAE 20 motor oil. Do NOT oil excessively.4. When the tool is not in use, keep handles closed to prevent objects from becoming lodged in the crimping dies. Periodic InspectionA. LubricationLubricate all pins, pivot points, and bearing surfaces with SAE 20 motor oil as follows: Tool used in daily production-lubricate daily Tool used daily (occasional)-lubricate weekly Tool used weekly-lubricate monthlyWipe excess oil from tool, particularly from crimping area. Visual Inspection1. Close tool handles until ratchet releases and then allow them to open freely. If they do not open quickly and fully, the spring is defective and must be replaced. See Section 6, REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR.2. Inspect crimping area for worn, cracked, or broken dies. If damage is evident, return the tool for evaluation and repair. Ratchet InspectionThe ratchet feature on these hand tools should be checked to ensure that the ratchet does not release prematurely, allowing the dies to open before they have fully bottomed.1. Squeeze the tool handles together, and count the number of ratchet stops. Five stops, including the release position, should be indicated by the movement of the ratchet pawl and the clicking sound associated with its movement. Refer to 2. If fewer positions are indicated, the ratchet pawl and ratchet handle must be replaced. Gaging the Crimping Chamber (Figure 5)1. Remove traces of oil or dirt from the crimping chamber and plug gage.2. In order to properly gage this tool, a terminal must be crimped in the crimping chamber being inspected. In place of a terminal, a soft material such as brass or solder may be used to seat the tooling.3. Close the tool handles until the crimping dies have bottomed; then hold in this position. DO NOT force the dies beyond initial contact.4. Hold locator assembly away from crimping dies. Carefully insert GO element into the corresponding crimping chamber; do not force it. The GO element must pass completely through the crimping chamber.5. In the same manner, try to insert the NO-GO element into the same crimping chamber. The NO-GO element may start entry, but must not pass completely through the crimping chamber. See Figure 5.If the crimping chambers conform to the crimping chamber inspection, the tool is considered dimensionally correct, and should be lubricated with a THIN coat of any good SAE 20 motor oil. If not, return the tool for further evaluation and repair. Crimp Height InspectionThis inspection requires the use of a micrometer with a modified anvil , as shown in Figure 4. AMP recommends the use of a modified micrometer (CrimpHeight Comparator RS10195LP) which can be purchased from:1. Refer to the table in Figure 4 and select wire (maximum size) for each crimp section listed in the chart.2. Refer to Section 3, CRIMPING PROCEDURE and crimp the contact accordingly.3. Using a crimp height comparator, measure the wire barrel crimp height as shown in Figure 4. If the crimp height conforms to that shown in the chart,the tool is considered dimensionally correct. CERTICRIMP Ratchet InspectionThe CERTICRIMP ratchet feature on the hand tool should be checked to ensure it does not release prematurely, allowing the crimping dies to open before they have fully bottomed. Obtain a 0.025mm .001in. shim that is suitable for checking the clearance between the bottoming surfaces of thecrimping dies. Proceed as follows:1. Select the maximum size wire and strip it according to the dimensions listed in Figure 2.2. Select the appropriate crimp section. See Figure 2.3. Position contact and wire between the crimping dies, as described in Section 3, CRIMPING PROCEDURE.4. Hold wire in place and squeeze tool handles together until the CERTICRIMP ratchet releases.Hold tool handles in this position, maintaining just enough tension on the handles to keep the dies closed.5. Check the clearance between the bottoming surfaces of the crimping dies. If the clearance is 0.025 mm .001 in. or less, the ratchet issatisfactory. If clearance exceeds 0.025 mm.001 in., the ratchet is out of adjustment and must be repaired. Make certain that all pivot pins are in place and secured with retaining rings. 3. Close the tool handles until the ratchet releases and then allow them to open freely. If they do not open quickly and fully, the spring is defective and must be replaced. See Paragraph 6, REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR. 4. Inspect the tool frame for wear or damage, paying particular attention to the jaws and pivot points. If damage is evident, refer to Paragraph 6, REPLACEMENT AND REPAIR. Periodic InspectionIt is recommended that the following inspections be conducted at least once a month by quality control personnel. More frequent inspections should be conducted if your work environment, company standards, or amount of tool use indicates the need.A. Visual Inspection1. Remove the die set from the tool, then remove all lubrication, accumulated film, and debris by immersing the dies and tool head in a mild commercial degreaser.2. Check for missing or defective pins, rings, or other retaining hardware. Replace parts as necessary.3. Closely inspect dies for damage, giving special attention to bearing surfaces and surfaces that contact the product. Worn, cracked, pitted, or chipped indenter or nest surfaces, or other obvious wear or damage to the die set or tool head requires removal of the affected part from service.B. Die Closure InspectionThe tool and die set is inspected for proper operation before shipment. To ensure uniform performance over the life of the tool, periodically inspect as follows:1. Insert a properly stripped cable of appropriate type and size into a sample modular plug. Then insert the unterminated cable and plug into the die cavity.2. Squeeze tool handles together slowly, while watching to ensure indenter bottoms against nest.3. Release the handles to open the die set, and remove the terminated modular plug assembly. 4. Test the crimp for proper crimp height according to Step 4 in Section 4. If the plug crimp height is within acceptable limits, lightly lubricate the tool and die set.
