Welcome to our university!B: Nice to meet you too!A: May I introduce myself? My name is Im a second-year student / sophomore of English Department. I major in English education, I do like English. I am a lawyer here in Shanghai and Ive been working as an attorney for about 3 years. My work is interesting, but it involves very complicated issues and often there are various strategies that are necessary for success.I enjoy meeting people and forming new relationships with people. I enjoy hearing peoples stories and I like trying my best to help them. I also enjoy getting out with my friends and enjoying the entertainment places. I am a big fan of jazz and there are a few places that I go to enjoy it. I can also play the saxophone and even play in a bad at a bar form time to time, but I dont have time to do it regularly. What I dont like doing? Hmm. let me think, well I suppose I just dont like having to go through a lot of very tedious details at work and quite frankly I dont like clients who lie to me about their situation. There are some things about the job, which I dont like and Im not proud about everything that I do, but overall I really like it.I think my good points are that Im quite good at communicating. I mean, you have to be as a lawyer. I do know a lot about the law, especially commercial law that is my specialty. I have a good memory for legal issues and law and I can use them quite well to argue a point. My bad points are that I am the worst person for finding directions. I get lost everywhere when Im traveling. If you ask my wife shell tell you that theres nobody as bad as I for getting lost in places. As for how you can be my friend. I think the key thing is that you just need to have a good sense of humour and you just need to be honest in your actions. Actually I am quire willing to be anyones friends but I hate people who make a big show of it. I dont need any special favours or gifts to be my friends. If people just act themselves.well, thats good enough for me. Describe your best friend.I met my best friend while I was at university. He was in the same class. At first, he scolded me for leaning back on my chair but, after a while, we began to become good friends. I used to meet him regularly at an Internet caf. He went there regularly. We would spend hours there together. He would always lend a hand to me because I didnt know much about computers at that time.Hes a humble guy, never shows off his knowledge, even though he can. Hes sincere and doesnt mind mildly scolding you or even himself in all the same sentence. . He is usually very sociable, but sometimes he can also be a bit shy. He is good at soccer and volleyball and used to be on the school team. Hes quite muscular and his hair is frizzy. He has very droopy eyes, like a puppy and a very wide mouth. I think the main reason we are such good friends is because we have a lot in common and we both have the same kind of humor. We also always support each other whenever we need help. I think we are such good friends because we dont feel we ever have to pretend around each other, and we are really helpful to one another. I will miss this guy a lot if I go overseas but since he is always at the internet caf, I can email him, and hes probably right there to receive it!Questions for discussionWhat you like and dont like doing? What your good points (i.e. strengths) and bad points (weaknesses)?Whats the best way to become your friend? Why do you think you are such good friends?Useful expressions and sentences 初次问候基本用语Good morning / afternoon / evening! How do you do ? Some policies to those poor students8. Hunting jobs9. Further educationUnit 3 College LifeSampleCollege Life(Neutral ground)In my understanding, if we refer to an ideal college life as a formal western dinner, then a high GPA, that is, Grade Point Average , should be the main course, while an active part in activities, together with associations, means the appetizer. Some romances, of course, play the role as desserts. They are the 3 key elements for an ideal college life. Those, however, are not what college life is all about. As we all know, college is wildly different from middle school. It connects not only adolescence to adulthood, but also the ivory tower to real society. Therefore, the ideal college life is that I become matured both physically and mentally, and that I obtain qualified academic knowledge and get well prepared for society at the same time.Under this circumstance, I never expect my college life to be too ideal, or you can call it too perfect. It is not realistic to make all things on my own way, with everyone liking me, winning the first prize all the time, and so on. Of course, Id like to lead a carefree life. However, this does little good to my future. What really helps is hardships like failure, betrayal, and unjust treatment. Only after experiencing those can I know what society is like, and what life is like.To conclude my speech, I want to say, some positive experiences are surely part of the ideal college life. But, I should not forget about the negative sides. They are not less necessary.College Life(Optimistic ground)You may feel that college life is boring and do not know how to deal with the plenty of spare time. But I think the college life will become wonderful as long as you make it meaningful. In your spare time, you could play basketball, football and so on. Doing sports is very interesting and good for you health. In fact, you can do anything that you are interested in. Do not be nervous. We are friends.Studying in college is a brand new start of our life. You can continue to stay hard for the better scores. Library is a good place for students to study in. If you want to show your talents and skills you can join in all kinds of activities. In a word, college life is wonderful!College Life(Pessimistic ground)I had always considered college life to be easy and colorful. But the idea disappeared days ago and will never come up. Perhaps, I couldnt learn that the life here was as tense as that of last year, until I had see the busy bodies moving between the classroom and dinning room, the continuous hard lessons passed by teachers and so on.I have more or less experienced this sort of life. But it is a single aspect of this tense life. Sometimes I feel that I would adapt to this life better if I were an owl, especially at weekends when I fall asleep in the early morning and open my red eyes after ten hours sound sleep.Though, few students fail in exams. Needless to say, I passed all the exams last term, and Ill do so in the coming term.No matter how tense the life will be, it is just out of the question to make me fail in any subject. Questions for discussion1. What of college does impress you most? The first thing I notice is the workload. It is heavier and more intense than I ever experienced before. The major challenges of college work are the large volume of reading. A related effect that can be brought on by the workload is doubt, frustration, and possibly loneliness. Almost all the students, including me, may have ever felt away from the comforts and friendships homes provided for us over the previous years.2. What do you expect in your college life?Ill make a lot of new friends. Continues to be myself. Dont strike a pose or play the role of someone Im not. Select my friends with the same care and patience I have always used. Believe it or not, my college friendships will be among the most satisfying and long-term of my life. Its always exciting to discover how wonderfully diverse college relationships can be.3. Do you think the CET 4/6 is necessary or not?4. What does claim the priority in you college life?5. Whats your favorite subject? Why?6. Can you say something about your job design for future?7. You choosing Nanyang Normal University, does it mean that you do hope to be a teacher?8. What have you done/What are you going to do to prepare for your dream?Useful Expressions: meet on campus discuss with professorsregister Whats your opinion on ?Whats your opinion of ?What do you think of /about?How do you feel about? What about ?It would seem to me that .As far as I am able to judge, As far as Im concerned, Id just like to say From my point of view, I thinkIf you want my opinion, Personally, I think As I see it ,Frankly, I think I wonder if you could explain about in more detail?Could I ask you a little more about in (rather) more detail?Im afraid Im not quite clear about 。Im interested in knowing more about Id like to add something here, if I may I have a point to make hereMay I interrupt you for a moment?Sorry to interrupt, butExcuse me, butIm sorry, but could you explain what you mean by ?What exactly do you mean by ?Well, what Im trying to say is that What I mean is that All Im trying to say is thatThats not quite what I meant Let me put it another way Sorry, let me explainIm inclined (not) to DoIn the vast majority of cases, In most cases, On the whole, Unit 4 Study and MajorPart OneSample What do you think of your major? My major is organic chemistry. I enjoy my major very much, even though there are many experiments related to my major. As sophomores, we have 12 courses this semester, 22 periods per week. I must study hard, so that I can pass the final exam and the credit of every course at the end of the semester. Every morning I must get up very early to get a seat at the front of the classroom. Once I miss any point teachers mentioned in the class, I have to make it up on my own. So at this college, we are all aware of the importance of self-teaching. I have a crush on my major, I decide to further my study after graduation. If possible, I still want to choose this college to pursue my post-graduate study. Questions for discussion1. What do you like most about your studies? Well, I guess the speaking part. Please allow me to explain. Language is all about communication. So when I am able to communicate with someone in English, I feel that I have achieved something. I particularly like our free talk sessions with the foreign teachers. It gives me the opportunity to question them about their countries and cultures.2. What is your major? As I have been studying on a full-time basis at an English Language School, we have only one subject, namely English for Academic Purposes called EAP. We do reading and writing, practical speaking, and listening by means of cassettes. English is the language of the future, especially in the business world. What I mean to say is that when I am able to communicate well in English I will not only be able to go and study abroad and improve my qualifications, but also have mastered a very necessary tool for my future career.3. Which is the best university in China? Thats an interesting question. Allow me to explain my personal view by shortly mentioning the following points: I believe that the Nanyang Normal University will be one of the best Universities in the country. 4. Describe your study habits? I have well established study habits. For example, I always start promptly at eight in the evenings. I study for two hours, have a ten-minute break, and the study for another two hours. I follow this habit from Mondays to Fridays, but over the weekends I put in more hours. For example, I study in the mornings and afternoons, and then take the evenings off to relax with my family or friends.5. Do you think your present subjects are relevant? Yes. Allow me to explain myself by shortly mentioning the following points: Firstly, we often use case studies in class. What I mean is that the professor gives us examples from real life to examine and report on. Secondly, our lecturers and some advisors from the relevant industries have set up our study material. What I mean to say is that the people who we are going to work for one day have had the opportunity to tell the university what they think we should be taught.6. What kind of job would you prefer after graduation? I would like to become a medical doctor. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I would like to render a service in the community to which I will eventually belong. For example, I would like to assist the elderly that do not have the financial means to afford private hospitals.7. What are your job prospects? I am planning to become a Hotel Manager. Please allow me to explain. Firstly, I believe that the hotel industry will be growing greatly in future. For example, people are becoming more affluent, and spend more and more of their money on holidays. In addition, I believe that after graduating I will be able to find a good job anywhere in the world. What I mean to say is that all hotels and resorts have the same objectives irrespective of where they are situated. Their aim is to ensure that their guests have a good time and return again.8. Do you rely on luck?Passing exams is every students dream. Failing them is their nightmare. So, to realize their dreams, many students try anything. They even go to fortunetellers, buy lucky charms and follow old customs. Remember, though, you cant always rely on luck. There is no substitute for hard work.Useful expressions and sentencesWhat courses are you planning to take? 你打算修些什么课程?
