However, the current studies on the relation between English teaching and the teacher-student relationship are not enough. As we all know, to learn English well, students need to do a lot of practice. It largely depends on the relationships between teachers and students whether students are willing to practice English or not. The teacher-student relationship is one of the important factors affecting English teaching.English teaching is a process that teachers and students do activities together, and it is also a process of students learning English under teachers instruction. English teachers should pay attention to the mutual exchanges with students when imparting knowledge and developing students intelligence. A harmonious teacher-student relationship can promote students learning motivity and evoke students enthusiasm for English learning. Therefore, in English teaching activities, teachers and students should respect and trust each other, making harmonious cooperation.A harmonious teacher-student relationship makes English teaching effective and is good for the development of both teachers and students. The emotion between teachers and students plays an important role in English teaching. “RobertRosenthal effect” indicates that: teachers love and the expectations are very important in promoting students academic performance. If the teacher-student relationship is disharmonious, it is easy for students to have psychological repercussions, and the quality of English teaching will be affected. The teacher-student relationship plays a vital role in English teaching. Only in a harmonious teacher-student relationship can English teaching go on smoothly and effectively.2. The factors determining English teachingWith the development of economic globalization and world integration, English has become a world language. The studies of English teaching attract lots of educators attention. Teachers knowledge and teaching skills, students received competence and students attitude will no doubt affect English teaching. There are many factors which will affect English teaching. The following are the analysis of some important factors:2.1 Teachers knowledge and teaching skills One of the most important conditions for effective English teaching is that teachers have steady knowledge in their chosen field and good teaching skills. Teachers can not complete teaching task without steady knowledge and good teaching skills. As the Chinese saying goes, “To give students a drop of water, teachers have to have a pail of water.” For English teachers, they are commanded not only to master the relative English knowledge, but also to master the skills of English teaching. The ability of teaching English is judged through narrating, presentation, questioning and discovering students mistakes. It is necessary for an English teacher to enlarge his or her range of knowledge, and improve his or her teaching skills.2.2 Students receptive abilityEnglish learning requires students to have good receptive ability. Students with good receptive ability usually do better and faster in their English study than those with poor receptive ability. However, it is hard to judge students receptive ability. Every student naturally has a potential of receptive ability. This potential is affected by the environments around students. Some of the environments improve the receptive ability while some others restrain it. It is better for English teacher to analyze every student receptive ability. Moreover, a good English teacher will try his or her best to develop the potential of students receptive ability.Teachers had better require students to make preparation for English classes. English learning is an accumulative progress. Students should be informed about the new knowledge to learn before class so that they have time to preview what they are going to learn. In this way, students are conscious of their aims for each English class.Teachers should try to create a pleasing atmosphere for English classes rather than bruise students heart and destroy students motivation. If a teacher punish a student in English class just because the student makes a small mistake, for instance, talking in class, then the teacher will damage students positive attitude. In such an atmosphere, it is not easy to develop students receptive ability. 2.3 Students attitude Students attitude toward English learning shows students recognition, feeling, and emotion about English. And the relationship between attitude and performance in English is much closer than that in any other subject.2.3.1 Causes on the part of students Students attitude is related to students interest. If a student who is interested in English, he or she will hold a good attitude toward English learning. Students characters may also affect students attitude toward English. In addition, students attitude toward English has something to do with gender. Generally speaking, girls show greater interest on English than boys.2.3.2 The teacher-student relationshipThe teacher-student relationship, just as the name implies, refers to the relationship between teacher and students. Teacher-student relationship embodies the personal relationship in education. As the saying goes, “Only when a student believes in his teacher will he accept what the teacher says.” The teacher-student relationship has an effect on students attitude toward English. Therefore, the teacher-student relationship has become one of the cheif factors which affect English-teaching. English teaching is a duplex activity between teacher and students. And enthusiasm is one of the reflections of harmonious teacher-student relationship. Hegel once said: “We can assert that there is nothing to get achievements in the world without enthusiasm.” A harmonious teacher-student relationship is essential to English-teaching. A view from Education Psychology shows that one of the outstanding factors affecting English teaching is students emotion. And students emotion, to a large extent, depends on the teacher-student relationship. According to the result of investigation carried out by western Psychologist, the factors affecting English learning for middle students are listed as following: emotion (33%), intelligence (20%), motivation (18%), interest (15%), and habit (95%), other (5%). From this investigation, it is not difficult for us to see that the emotion between teacher and student is the most important. One of the main tasks for English teacher is that enable students to open their mouth to speak English.In a word, lots of studies show that students attitude play a very important role in English teaching. And all studies show that a positive attitude toward English will help students improve their English. There should be a positive attitude, or it is not possible to learn English well. Some students who held negative attitude have changed to be positive through teachers instruction. This phenomenon shows that students attitude toward English is changeable. Therefore, English teachers are required to build a harmonious teacher-student relationship, for it can help student to hold a positive attitude and improve the quality of the English teaching.3. The present situation of teacher-student relationship in middle schoolThe following is a questionnaire for investigation carried out in Huangtusheng Middle School in Shantou. Students who are questioned come from Class5 and Class6, Grade2. The result of investigation is representative. However, there are some disharmony between some students and teachers. For example, teachers seldon make a chat with students. Therefore, they know little about their students. If a teacher create a harmonious relationship between her/him and students, then students are likely to consider her or him as a good teacher, although the teacher is bad at teaching skills. The lack of emotional communication between teachers and students not only damage the relationship between teachers and students, but also lose the valuable motivity for English teaching activities. Therefore, emotional communication plays a important role in English teaching.4. The effect of harmonious teacher-student relationship on English teaching Harmony is beautiful; harmony is the greatest feature of all beautiful things; Harmony is what people pursuit. A harmonious teacher-student relationship is important for English teaching, which should not be overlooked.4.1 It is beneficial to the bilateral activities of English teachingWhether teachers and students can establish a harmonious relationship or not has a direct impact on the English teaching objectives. English teaching is a bilateral activity. Therefore, teachers should play the leading role well and give students the principal role. This is the only way to perform artistry and to create an ideal English teaching result. American psychologists Lindgren said: “Just as other social process, education relies on communication.” A good English teaching result can be achieved only when there is a harmonious relationship between teachers and students. Psychology research shows that in a relaxed and happy state of the mood the students can perform their creativities. At the same time the students will release their potential of learning, which is good for them to accept knowledge. A happy and relaxed class atmosphere comes from a harmonious teacher-student relationship. Only when creating a harmonious teacher-student relationship can teachers comply with the pace of development, constantly improve themselves and develop their own teaching ability so that they can improve English teaching. A harmonious teacher-student relationship can not only make English teaching more effective, but also give students enjoyment in all their lives. That is the so-called “give ones fish for a meal use, and teach one to fish for enjoying a life.” A harmonious teacher-student relationship is a solid foundation for teachers to teach students to fish, and it can help students to be initiative at the time of teachers are performing their leading role.4.2 It is beneficial to keeping students initiative for English learningPractice shows that a harmonious teacher-student relationship may lead students to a happy mood and to an interest for exploring. Getting interested in learning all knowledge is the initial motivity. Students who are interested in English learning will have courage to overcome all difficulties in the course of English learning. On contrast, the lost of interest for English learning will not only become the resistance, but also cause psychological pressure which is a bad effect for future development. Therefore, training students to be interested in English learning is the basic condition to keep students initiative for English learning.English is a practical, operative subject. To use English freely, students are required to keep practicing and make exchanges with each other. Students are the masters of learning. They are willing to overcome any difficulty if they know their master roles. One student was right when he said: “Happy to learn is better than intended to learn.” It is obvious that the relationship between teachers and students directly affects teachers enthusiasm for English teaching and students interest in English learning.Generally speaking, if students like a certain teacher, the class atmosphere will become very active and students interest for English learning will arise spontaneously. A large number of facts show that if students have a favorable impression of a teacher, they will be interested in this teachers class and take it particularly serious. Relatively they will be willing to work hard. Some students will even“love the teacher and love his dog”, paying particular attention to all the things which are associated with the teacher. Therefore, teachers should attach importance to the inputs of feelings, using sincere love to arouse students emotional resonance. Besides, teachers should convey their emotional information of encouraging, trust and respect to students through their own words and deeds, enable the students to open their mouths to speak English without fear of making mistakes. A harmonious teacher-student relationship is helpful for creating a kind of positive teaching situation.Many teachers know that the things that can touch students are easy for them to remember and are to be maintained for a long time, some will even be kept for students life time. Those loving things that students have a favorable impression will be able to maintain firmly in students minds. The result of an investigation shows that 93% of the students believe that a positive learning situation is helpful for English learning. Therefore, teachers should inspire students to learn and help students to cultivate an interest in English learning as a psychological need.In this way, students can maintain the enthusiasm of English learning, engage in active English activities, and develop language ability so that they can become the masters of English learning and develop their learning potential. For the subject of English, due to its characteristics, emotional education is a very good method for English teaching. Creating a harmonious teacher-student relationship is the starting point of emotional education.4.3 It is beneficial to teachers for self-improvementIf the teacher-student relationship is harmonious, for instance, students have confidence in teachers ability, take their teachers as friends, take part in English teaching activities actively and express such emotions through various means to their teachers, and then teachers will continue to strengthen their determination of working hard for students. Teachers will not only experience the fun for creation and successes in the process of cooperation with students but also improve their English teaching ability from the healthy growth of students. The words and deeds of students, whether they are active participations or only the responses to English teachers teaching activities would promote teachers to improve themselves. In this process, the expectations to teachers which given by their students will stimulate the development of teachers; the evaluation will help teachers to improve their teaching skills; students active participations will also give teachers encouragement.We must admit that we can learn many valuable things from our students. In the relationship between teachers and students, teachers display their creative talents and improve their skills, realize their ideals and the value of life at the exchange with students. The efforts which teachers have given can not only promote and enhance the development of students, but also make teachers themselves sublimate their integrity. This interaction between teachers and students is not a one-time or intermittent, but a chain, a cycle
