I came to work in Hangzhou three years ago as a salesperson in Pin Solutions, a company mainly focusing on the trading of wooden toys with European countries. I am now sales manager of the same company. In my job I usually talk or write to my clients in English. I have no problem communicating with my foreign customers or trade partners. However, I do regard my English inadequate and it sometimes prevents me from communicating my ideas to my hearts content. So here I am. I got married two years ago. Now I have a beautiful daughter. So most of the time when I am free I will be at home, taking care of her. Sometimes we also go to see movies together. I also like swimming. Each year I take my family to the seaside for a few weeks as vacation. I hope we can make friends in this class and I do hope we can learn a lot of things together. Unit two: The thing I do most in my spare time is reading. So I suppose it is my hobby all right. I like reading all kinds of books; though I should say I like detective books the best. I do not only read those so-called classic detective books, for example, Judge Dee, Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot. I read all that I can get, including hundreds of unknown mysteries. I read books whenever I have time. I usually take books with me so when I can sit I will begin reading. Some people enjoy reading newspapers or magazines but I find less interest in these because you will finish reading something too quickly, without much time to reflect in your mind and do some thinking, which is the most interesting to me, though it is also time-consuming. I used to read books in bed. Now I have changed this habit for it is harmful to your sleep. And if you cannot sleep well you cannot enjoy reading. I think that is all about my hobby: reading.Unit three:I went to Greece during the winter last year. That is one experience I can never forget. I shouldnt say I have good impressions about the Greek cab drivers because I got fooled around by one of them. When the plane landed, I went out of the airport. It was 9 or so in the evening. So it was already very dark outside. I took the first cab I saw and asked the driver to take me to the hotel I booked. I thought he understood me because he started driving immediately. In darkness we did not exchanged any other words until 30 minutes later. The cab went on and on but I did not see anything like a city or a town. I got worried so I began to ask the driver where we were. It was then that I found that he did not speak English, or pretended he did not. So I wrote the address on a paper for him. Another 30 minutes later we arrived at the hotel. He charged me 80 Euros for the trip, which was actually 15 minutes by car if driving properly! Unit four: As a student I am fairly old now. As a language learner I am not talented as well. But I am determined to learn English, and I have made up my mind to learn it well. In my secondary school and college I studied English for some time. However, I did not quite realize how important English can be later in my life. After graduation from college I went to work in a foreign trade company. I seldom dealt with foreigners because I was not responsible for negotiating with them. But once an American client came directly to our company, asking to see our manager. It happened that nobody else was available at that time so I had to speak to him. It took us more than 10 minutes to figure out what was happening. And since I insisted that I shall cope with it alone I thought my colleagues around were secretly laughing at me. I apologized to the client when he was leaving. But he told me it was quite all right. “You know what!” he said “I am learning Chinese myself and I do understand how difficult it is for you to learn English. But I suppose I have begun and I will continue however difficult it is.” I am greatly encouraged by him and I also believe I can learn my English well. Unit five: I think our Distant Learning School is a reflection of the advance technologies we possess nowadays and it helps us greatly in learning. For example, though I live in Hangzhou I do not have to come to the classroom for class because the class is recorded and I can download it and watch it as if I were in the real class. I can take 3 or 4 class together or in any other way I like. I can also communicate through BBS with the teacher. All is convenient and fast, especially for us who are working during day time while we have to finish our study and homework in the evenings and weekends. However, there are certain flaws as well in the current system. We cannot communicate face to fact with the teacher. Though we can write emails, our questions usually got answered long after they got solved by themselves or forgotten by us. Since we are also very busy we tend to watch all the recorded classes at the end of the semester, just before the final examination. Therefore I sincerely hope there are more assistants working to maintain the system. So we can contact them on-line in a larger time-scale and get our problems solved immediately. They can also monitor us better in our learning process. Unit six: Well, we were quite excited when we knew the 2008 Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. We were quite proud of our country and our capital and we were very happy that we can witness the grand event inside our homeland. On the other hand, it is very difficult to say what we can really do for the Olympic Games. Of course we are going to cheer for our athletes and our teams. I suppose many of us will cheer for other athletes and other teams we like. I think a lot of us like watching football, basketball, volleyball or other team sports while many others like swimming, or track and field. Many people will gather in Beijing to watch their favorite sports and favorite athletes. So for them to buy the tickets is very important. I am not very sure when tickets will be available. But the earlier we get them in our hands the better. For me myself I am going to practice my English for the next few months. I already registered as a volunteer worker in the Games. So I will have a great deal to do with helping the foreign guests out and I suppose that will be a real test for my English.Unit seven: Western chain restaurants? They are a typical phenomenon in China now. I go to cinemas very often. But I think I spent more money in the KFC just next to the cinema than in the tickets for the movies. I dont think they are very expensive to the westerners since they are all fast foods. But to us it is not very cheap. To take a full meal, for example, for myself, will cost me something like a hundred yuan, which can provide me a good meal in almost any Chinese restaurants. The service is certainly very good. The foods are served in a very quick way and the overall environment in the restaurants are fairly good. But the point is, do the fast foods worth so much? They are called junk foods by westerners and usually children in western countries are discouraged from taking them very often. I dont think I will really agree if people say its a kind of cultural invasion or something like that. But I suppose I will also cut down my budget on them. Anyway, we have so many good Chinese foods that will be at least as good as the western fast foods, if they are as fast, that is. Unit eight: I have kept pets. I still keep some. And I do plan to keep pets in the future. I did not choose to keep pets at the very beginning. Your parent chose your pets, as the rule went in the past, you know. But I soon began to like them. They can give you so much fun, as you can imagine. My first pet is a cat. It was very sick and was almost dying when it came to my family. We were never aware that we had vets as a profession but anyway there were no one available at that time. So my parents fixed some medicine for her. And in a week it got better and soon it could walk around. In the first month it climbed to the high wall around our house and caught its first mouse! Of course keeping pets will bring its own trouble. For example, our cat and later, cats usually want to sleep on beds. And they eat anything they want to eat. This would mean they stole things they were not supposed to take, fish, meat, eggs, or even living chicken! But anyway they are worth the trouble. They are like kids to you. So I like pets. And I will continue to keep them. Unit nine: I would like to talk about Qingdao city, where I went to a few years ago. I went there on business. But I took a few more days off as my vacation to stay there. I have heard of Qingdao so often in the past that I was almost disappointed at first sight. It was not so modern as I had thought. Some of the buildings were quite old and wanted renovation. It was certainly a tourist city because you could see so many people in the streets. It was crowded everywhere! However, since I am living in Hangzhou, which is a tourist city as well and I had enough experience dealing with such situation I went quickly to places where people seldom went, which were places not so well known as tourist sites but as beautiful. So I began to have some peace and enjoyed some quiet beach and the Lao Mountain and bought many cheap souvenirs for my family. I found Qingdao better than I thought earlier in the end and I plan to go there this summer again for my summer vacation.Unit ten: Unlike others, I think the only means of transportation I prefer would be cars. If possible, I would like to go to any place in my small cozy BMW. I am not a rich person. But I am very generous for costs spent on cars. Up to now I have spent hundreds of thousands of money on it. I would like my car to be clean and shining at all times. And I enjoy going around in it. Of course oil price is becoming more and more expensive nowadays. But no worry. I think I can still afford it. And I do care about our environment. So I will not create unnecessary pollutions with my car. When I travel to other cities out of our province I have to take planes and trains. But if time and road conditions permit, I would never hesitate to drive my car to the destination. I dont like to share some limited space with a crowd strange to me. I will easily get depressed in such surroundings. On the other hand, on sunny clear days, I would also enjoy excursions or mountaineering on foot.Unit eleven: I think men and women should be treated equally. As we often say, men are born equal. Of course, that is not to say that we should be treated in exactly the same way. This would only mean that we should enjoy equal rights. Take work for example, I think they should enjoy equal access to job opportunities and promotions, equal pay for the same work, etc. Men and women are very different, both physically and mentally. So I dont think its desirable for them to do the same thing. But their difference should be valued and considered as opportunities for them to develop their own abilities and talents. Or otherwise, take family role for example, the mother is usually suitable to take care of housework, the children while the men should think more about bread earning and heavy labor work at home. Therefore, treating men and women equally means a good understanding of the differences between men and women so good plans can be made to have them work to their full capacity and thus also make both happy about their respective life. Unit twelve: I have my own person computer. Almost everybody around me have one or two computers of their own. So this is something quite commonplace. On the other hand, different people may have very different usages of their own computer. I like my computer and like computers in the general sense. As a businessman I used to deal with a lot of paperwork. So I hated business trips to other cities because I had to take a lot of files with me which took a lot of space and also were very heavy to carry around. Now I use a very small Toshiba laptop which is almost the size of a normal notebook. And it weighs only 1 kilo or so with its power plug and other accessory parts. I put everything in it. Together with the provincial-coverage wireless internet service, I am almost capable to do anything I want to do in my office with it. Its always argued that young people should not get addicted to internet surfing and computer games. I am so fascinated by my own work and the full function of my computer that I took very little interest in doing these continuously unless necessary. So, in a word, I am quite fond of computers, especially my own computer. Unit thirteen: My ideal job is doing business. Its very difficult to define what kind of business I want to deal with. I should say I want to do business with high added value in knowledge, for example, IT, or Bio products. But to start with I am also willing to be a book dealer, or selling things that I can lay my hands on. I like to be a businessman because almost all my family members are businessmen. So from my childhood I was watching business people and listening to their talks. I found something like magic in the business circles. I am not saying that everything I heard and saw were perfect. But they certainly attracted me. From then on I made up my mind that I should be a businessman in the future. To begin my career I chose to study economy in college. And from the third year I began to work part time in a trading company. I started my own company immediately after graduation. My ideal work
