1. FriendshipFriendship is important to people. A person needs friendship in life. But what is friendship? What does it mean to me?Friendship can help us grow up, and make us work hard. When we fail to do something, our friends will try to help us until we can manage to work it out.Friendship can ease our pain or sorrow. When we have difficulty in work or in our study or in our daily life, we can tell our friends, theyll certainly come to our help.Friendship is like a flower. We must do a lot of work in order to make the flower beautiful. Friends must help each other and learn from each other. We must help our friends when they re in trouble. When they get some progress, we should congratulate them, and encourage them. When our friends make some mistake, we must tell them and help them to correct it.If we have no friends, well be very lonely. Everyone needs friendship. A friend in need is a friend indeed.2. My Opinion of TimeEveryone thinks time is important. But the ways they use time can be very different. Some people think lost time can never come back, they must seize every minute and do the most in the limited life time. It is a crime to let a day go by without gaining anything. They .think a smart person makes full use of his or her time and has a ready-made plan for each day: four hours for work, two hours for reading, one hour for housekeeping, one and half hours for meals, thirty minutes for sports, etc. In a word, they dont have even one meaningless second. But other people think quite the opposite. They think no matter how busy they are, they should handle things in no hurry. They want to do things at leisure. They think if one keeps himself or herself so stretched by not wasting a single second, life will become a burden. He or she will become exhausted and shorten the life-span much sooner than expected. And one who takes his or her time to do things will live longer because of his or her temper and health. The former may shorten a life of 70 to that of 50, and the latter may expand a life of 50 to that of 70.In my opinion, time is precious because our life is limited. We should make full use of our time to do something during our lifetime. On the other hand, we must relax ourselves once in a while in order to keep ourselves fit and raise our work efficiency.3. HonestyHonesty is a good virtue. An honest person never tells a lie and is sincere to his friends. It is easy for him to keep his old friends and make new friends. He is willing to help others; he can get help from others when he needs it.I think all of us here have heard this story. A boy used to look after sheep on a hill. One day, he thought it would be fun to tell a lie to have the villagers come to the hill. So he cried out, Help, help! A wolf is here! At this, all the villagers came rushing. But they were unhappy to see the boy wild with joy instead of a fierce wolf. The next day, a wolf did come. The boy cried out for help, but no one came to his rescue, and he was devoured by the wolf. This story tells us we must be honest in doing things. A businessman must be honest in order to win more customers; a statesman must be honest to get more support; and an average person must be honest to win trust and help.As students, we must be honest in order to learn more now and pave our way to success in our future careers.4. On ReadingAs we all know, to open a book is always rewarding. Books contain our history, discoveries and the knowledge and experience of ages; they picture for us the wonders and beauties of nature; they help us in our difficulties, comfort us in sorrow and in suffering; they store our minds with ideas, fill them with good and happy thoughts.Books are our good friends. They can take us to great thinkers, great engineers and great scientists. We hear what they said and about what they did; we see them as if they were really alive. Books can take us to the mountains or the seashore, and to the most beautiful parts of the world without tiredness or trouble. A good book may be among the best of friends. It is the same today as it always was, and it will never change. It does not turn its back on us in times of difficulty. It always receives us with the same kindness.Books are also our teachers. They teach us anything we want to know. They can strengthen our character and broaden our knowledge. As long as we live, we have to learn. But ones life is limited, while knowledge is boundless. There are so many things for us to learn and understand. Only books and tell us all .Lets make full use of time and read more books. Im sure you will find happiness in reading.5. The Spring FestivalHow time flies! After Christmas and New Year comes the Spring Festival. It is quite a great event to the Chinese people. long before it arrives, children look forward to it with great eagerness.Several days before the Spring Festival, people begin to make preparations. Farmers kill pigs, sheep and chickens. People in cities buy meat, fish and vegetables. Houses are cleaned. Colourful lanterns are hung at the gates. On the eve of the new year, each family has its members gathered and eats a family reunion dinner. After the meat they watch TV until the clock strikes twelve. Then every family sets off firecrackers and fireworks to see the old year out and the new year in.On the first day of the new year, almost everyone is dressed in his or her best. New year calls are paid to relatives and friends, and new year cards and presents are exchanged. When people meet on the way, they say to each other Happy New Year! 6. DiligenceDiligence is the key to success. It means if one persists in doing his work, he would be sure to succeed. But it does not mean exerting ourselves all day and night without rest. The true meaning of diligence is to use time carefully for the purpose of improvement, or to work hard without wasting time.Laziness makes us useless. If we do not study and work hard, we will not be able to earn a living in the world. There will be nothing we can do just because we have failed to learn anything by letting the time pass unused. Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.Time is precious. As an English proverb says: Lost time never returns. Time is the only thing that can not be purchased with money. Therefore we must make god use of our time and study hard when we are young.7. No Pains, No GainsThe old saying No Pains, No Gains means that if we want to get something done, we must take great pains to do it; otherwise, we cant do anything.Take myself for example. Many people ask me how I have managed to speak good English. Well, I began to learn to speak English two years ago. I went to oral English classes three evenings a week, went to English corners twice a week, got up early every morning to Practice and seized every opportunity to practise speaking. I have missed lots of entertainment and time for spare time activities. In this way, I have made Progress day by day in my oral English. All my efforts have been worthwhile. It is the same with all other things. Anyone who has achieved something in his life must have worked very hard before his final success. A lot of great names come to our mind: Albert Einstein, Thomas Edison, Madam Curie, Newton, Lincoln, to name only a few. So lets learn from these great people and try our best for our goals.8. Science and Human LifeScience is very important to human life. It plays and will play a big part in conquering nature and improving human life. With the development of science, we now have television, computers, airplanes, rockets and so on. Television makes our world smaller. Airplanes make long distance short. Rockets carry man to travel in space. Computers are helping man in solving different problems in industry, agriculture and other fields. Without it, there would be no civilization of today.Science can do good to mankind, but it can do evil as well. When it is wisely used, it will bring benefit. For example, atomic energy can help man generate electricity. If it is wrongly used, its destructive power is uncontrollable and terrible. It can destroy thousands and thousands of lives in a split second.Science -has made great contributions to modern civilization, but it has also brought about many problems. What we must do is to bring its advantages to full play and at the same time try our best to decrease and avoid possible problems in the development of science.9. On HappinessPeople have many interpretations for happiness. Some think happiness lies in the fact one has achieved what one wants. The harder one strives for something, the happier one is when the goal is reached. If one takes great pains to accomplish a task all his or her life, when the work is finally done, this person can say his or her whole life is happy. An idle life is not happiness. Neither is a meaningless life. But some people think one can enjoy nothing and be happy, and one can achieve nothing and be happy. A woman can remain a housewife all her life and be happy. Happiness lies in the fact that one can find harmony even in things that are world apart. So, a peaceful life is happiness, a contented life is happiness. If one wants to find happiness it can be found everywhere and in everything, even in things insignificant and trivial. So far as I am concerned, happiness is a state of mind featured by psychological balance and a pleasant feeling. As an old Chinese saying goes, He who is contented with his status quo is happy. Owing to differences in peoples standards and aspirations, it is natural that people have different views on happiness. So I think the two kinds of views are quite justified.10. A Correct Approach to QuarrelsOnce in a while, quarrels seem almost unavoidable among people. For one thing or another, they start to quarrel. And sometimes they end up in blows.Naturally, some people think quarrels are really disastrous. They hurt peoples feelings. They turn friendship into hostility and make life a burden and suffering. Quarrels create a lot of tragedies and bring about much misery. But others think quarrels are caused because of misunderstandings. They cant be avoided, whats more, quarreling, in a way, is also a means to make people more learned and understand each other better. If handled with care and in an appropriate way, they can make people closer to each other. Sincere friendship is often built up this way. They can make strangers acquaintances and turn enemies into friends. In my opinion, when a quarrel arises, we should first of all find out the causes of the quarrel, find more faults with ourselves and try to solve it in a proper way. This will help us avoid future quarrels and make people reconciled. Of course, we should stick to our point of view when we are right. Blind unity at the cost of principles should be avoided.11. Competition and CooperationOurs is regarded as a very competitive society, yet a lot of undertakings call for cooperation. Then, how should we understand the relationship between competition and cooperation?Lets illustrate this with a football team. Everybody on the team works hard and strives to be the best player. He will make full of his own advantages to catch up with and surpass the others. But everyone should cooperate with the others and work together to win the game. A team good at individual skills but poor in team work can never win a game. This example tells us many things. While competition helps enhance individual strength, cooperation helps bring individual strength to full play, make tip for each others defects and enhance the overall quality of the parties involved. As a matter of fact, it is by this means that our society has achieved todays prosperity. A sound cycle of competition and cooperation promote each other, thus promoting the development of the whole society. But, competition without cooperation will be good to only a few people but harmful to the society as a whole, while cooperation without competition will do harm to individuals initiative and eventually stagnate social development. So lets compete in the spirit of cooperation and cooperate on the basis of competition.12. The Advantages of Being YoungThere are so many advantages of being young that I think it would take me several hours to mention them all in detail. However, in my allotted time, I could list the principal ones.Firstly, one good thing about being young is that one can make great plans for the future.Next in order, I think, is the fact that when one is Young, ones mind is fresh and it is much easier to absorb new knowledge.Thirdly, one can participate in all sorts of sports, including some of the very strenuous ones, without fear of the many serious consequences that elderly people would have to fear. But this, of course, also depends on ones physical condition. No matter how young a person may be, if he is not physically fit, he must be on guard against over-straining himself. Finally, when one is not yet advanced in age, one looks much more attractive in personal appearance. When he looks at himself in the mirror, he does not find the many ugly wrinkles on the face and neck, white hair on his head (or no hair at all), and dirty stains on his skin that make old people wince when they look at themselves.Yes, its truly wonderful to be young and fit. I sometimes wish that I could always maintain my youth like Peter Pan and never grow old.13.The Purposes of SchoolHave you ever asked yourself why children go to school? You will probably say that they go to school to learn their own language and other languages, arithmetic, geography, geometry, history, science and all the other subjects. This is quite true. But why do they learn these things? They learn their own language so that they will be able to tell others clearly what they want and what they know, and understand what others tell them. And other subjects they study at school will also have some practical uses in their life.Well, are these things all that they learn at school? We go to school above all to learn how to learn, so that, when we have left school, we continue to learn. Therefore, the purposes are not just to teach languages, arithmetic, etc . , but to teach students the way to learn.14. Purposes of Going AbroadSince the implementation of Open-door policy in the early 1980s, tens of thousands of Chinese, mostly young people, have gone abroad and now more are waiting for their chances or making opportunities. Among them the overwhelming majority want to study advanced science and technology. Some of them plan to settle down as immigrants. As for me, I belong to the majority. I have been applying for admission into the graduate school of a world-famous university. As a scientist, I know it is quite helpful to receive first-class training under the guidance of leading professors and to do experiments in the worlds top laboratories. Although I am funded by the government in research programs, there is no newly-developed equipment. Besides, we lack experience and the latest literature concerning the research projects. If I can succeed in obtaining the opportunity to study in that university, I will be able to accomplish my research work at an earlier date and make a greater contribution to my motherland since my research result can be applied earlier. On the other hand, if I fail to go abroad, 1, for lack of literature, experience and guidance, will be groping in darkness and my research result will surely be outdated by the work of my foreign counterparts. At a time when people have conflicting views on going abroad, I have this definite purpose as mentioned above and I believe I am justified as those who share similar purposes or reasons in the hope of going abroad-studying science and technology for the motherland.15. On Part-time JobsNowadays many college students have part-time jobs. Some work as tutors, some as waiters and waitresses, and some as salespersons. How should we look at this phenomenon? In my opinion, part7time jobs bring about many advantages. First of all, students can learn something from society and gain some social experience. This will be useful to their future career. Secondly, they will come to know what kind of jobs are most suitable for them after graduation, and what kind of knowledge and ability will be necessary, so that they will work harder at their courses. In addition, part-time jobs enable students to get some money. With this money, they can buy books, reference materials and daily necessities. They can have better conditions for their life and study without increased burdens on their parents. For all these advantages, part-time jobs have disadvantages. Some students often get tired from their jobs and they dont have enough time for their studies. Besides, the inexperienced students sometimes are involved in some troubles. So I think students should handle properly the relationship between their study and part-time jobs. Always remember study is our full-time job.16. On Environmental PollutionIf you have a look around, you will find that brooks and rivers are no longer clear. Instead, they are filled with rubbish, litter or other fifth. The blue sky is now darker with heavy smoke or smog. However, this is only part Of the scene of pollution. Pollution has become such a monstrous enemy of our threatened nature that it is high time we took measures to protect our environment. What causes pollution? Man s negligence of environmental protection! In the process of obtaining more useful materials to improve his life, man has set up many factories and
