Repayment of the loan begins six months after the student leaves school. These loans carry on interest until this time. The current interest rate is 5 percent. Students may borrow up to $4,500 annually from a bank, credit union, savings and loan association or other eligible lender. Repayment on these loans usually begins six months after the student leaves school. These loans carry no interest until this time. This current interest rate is 9 percent. Parents may borrow up to $300 annually for each dependent college. Repayment begins forty-five days after receiving the loan, and the interest rate is 12 percent.21. Which of the following is the main purpose?A. To remind students and their families to repay their loan.B. To compare interest rates.C. It can be inferred from the passage that _.A. the students school determines who is an eligible lenderB. money is available for student loansC. students need not be enrolled half time to borrow moneyD. the interest rate on student loans is increasing Passage TwoIts very interesting to note where the debate about diversity(多样化)is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund, we have a lot of contact with top corporate(公司的)leaders; none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to expand the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that doesnt occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientist, the lawyers, or the business managers they will need. Likewise, I dont hear people in the academy saying. “Lets go backward. Lets go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy(不拘一格选人才)” (which was never true-we never had a meritocracy, although weve come close to it in the last 30 years). I recently visited a great little college in New York where the campus had doubled its minority population in the last six years. I talked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the university is better because of the diversity. So where we hear this debate is primarily in political circles and in the media-not in corporate board rooms or on college campuses. 26. The word “imperative” (Line 5, Para.1) most probably refers to something _. A superficial B remarkable C debatable D essential 27. Which of the following groups of people still differ in their views on diversity? A Minorities. B Politicians. C Professors. D Managers. 28. High corporate leaders seem to be in favor of promoting diversity so as to _. A lower the rate of unemployment B win equal political rights for minorities C be competitive in the world market D satisfy the demands of a growing population 29. It can be inferred from the passage that _. A meritocracy can never be realized without diversity B American political circles will not accept diversity C it is unlikely that diversity will occur in the U.S. media D minorities can only enter the fields where no debate is heard about diversity. 30. According to the passage diversity can be achieved in American society by _. A expanding the pool of potential employees B promoting policies that provide skills to employees C training more engineers, scientists lawyers and business managers D providing education for all regardless of race or sexPassage ThreeImagine eating everything delicious you want with none of the fat. That would be great, wouldnt it? New fake fat products appeared on store shelves in the United States recently, but not everyone is happy about it. Makers of the products, which contain a compound called olestra, say food manufacturers can now eliminate fat from certain foods. Critics, however, say the new compound can rob the body of essential vitamins and nutrients and can also cause unpleasant side effects in some people. So its up to consumers to decide whether the new fat-free products taste good enough to keep eating. Chemists discovered olestra in the late 1960s, when they were searching for a fat that could be digested by infants more easily. Instead of finding the desired fat, the researchers created a fat that cant be digested at all. Normally, special chemicals in the intestines (肠) grab molecules of regular fat and break them down so they can be used by the body. A molecule of regular fat is made up of three molecules of substances called fatty acids. The fatty acids are absorbed by the intestines and bring with them the essential vitamins A, D, E, and K. When fat molecules are present in the intestines with any of those vitamins, the vitamins attach to the molecules and are carried into the bloodstream. Olestra, which is made from six to eight molecules of fatty acids, is too large for the intestines to absorb. It just slides through the intestines without being broken down. Manufacturers say its that ability to slide unchanged through the intestines that makes olestra so valuable as a fat substitute. It provides consumers with the taste of regular fat without any bad effects on the body. But critics say olestra can prevent vitamins A, D, E, and K from being absorbed. It can also prevent the absorption of carotenoids (类胡萝卜素), compounds that may reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease, etc. Manufacturers are adding vitamins A, D, E, and K as well as carotenoids to their products now. Even so, some nutritionists are still concerned that people might eat unlimited amounts of food made with the fat substitute without worrying about how many calories they are consuming.31. We learn from the passage that olestra is a substance that _. A. contains plenty of nutrients B. renders foods calorie-free while retaining their vitamins C. makes foods easily digestible D. makes foods fat-free while keeping them delicious 32. The result of the search for an easily digestible fat turned out to be _. A. commercially useless B. somewhat controversial C. just as anticipated D. quite unexpected 33. Olestra is different from ordinary fats in that _. A. it passes through the intestines without being absorbed B. it facilitates the absorption of vitamins by the body C. it helps reduce the incidence of heart disease D. it prevents excessive intake of vitamins 34. What is a possible negative effect of olestra according to some critics? A. It may impair the digestive system. B. It may affect the overall fat intake.C. It may increase the risk of cancer. D. It may spoil the consumers appetite. 35. Why are nutritionists concerned about adding vitamins to olestra? A. It may lead to the over-consumption of vitamins. B. People may be induced to eat more than is necessary. C. The function of the intestines may be weakened. D. It may trigger a new wave of fake food production.Passage FourThe most striking single fact about chimpanzees is the flexibility of their social life, the lack of any rigid form of organization. It represents about as far as a departure from the baboon(狒狒) type of organization as one can find among the higher primates, and serves to emphasize the great variety of primate adaptations. Chimpanzees are more human than baboons, or rather they jibe better with the way we like to picture ourselves, as free-wheeling individuals who tend to be unpredictable, do not take readily to any form of regimentation, and are frequently charming. (Charm is relatively rare among baboons.)Two researchers have described what they found during more than eight months spent among chimpanzees in their natural habitat, the forest: “We were quite surprised to observe that there is no single distinct social unit in chimpanzee society. Not only is there no “family” or “harem” organization; neither is there a “troop” organization - that is to say, no particular chimpanzees keep permanently together. On the contrary, individuals move about at will, alone or in small groups best described as bands, which sometimes form into large aggregations. They leave their associates if they want to, and join up with new ones without conflict.”The general practice is best described as “easy come, easy go” although there are certain group-forming tendencies. As a rule chimpanzees move about in one of four types of band: adult males only; mothers and offspring and occasionally a few other females; adults and adolescents of both sexes, but no mothers with young; and representatives of all categories mixed together. The composition of bands may change a number of times during the course of a day as individuals wander off and groups split or combine with other groups. On the other hand, certain individuals prefer one anothers company. One of the researchers observed that four males often roamed together over a four-month period, and mothers often associated with their older offspring.36.The authors main purpose is to explain _.A. how chimpanzees mateB. the differences between baboons and chimpanzeesC. why chimpanzees live in the forest.D. The relationships among chimpanzees37. The author implies that the social behavior of baboons is _.A. predictable B. practicalC. politicalD. primitive38. According to the passage, the researchers were surprised that Chimpanzees had such _.A. temporary associationsB. humanlike familiesC. violent conflictsD. large harems 39.In paragraph 3, the phrase “easy come, easy go” could best be replaced by _.A. ImmobileB. NonchalantC. FunctionalD. aggressive, hostile40.Where in the passage does the author concede (承认) that individual chimpanzees may have a preference for certain companions?A.
