Unit 7 Family TiesPassage A Things I Learned From Dad Three successful people reveal how fathers shape their destiny. Rebecca Lobo: Be Loving I knew - even when I was very young - just how much my mom and dad loved each other. Whenever one of them went out, they kissed each other good-bye. My brother, sister and I thought this was gross! But when I get married, I can only hope that I will have found someone who loves me as much as Dad loves Mom. Because there was always so much love in the family, I grew up with an incredible security blanket. Mom battled breast cancer when I was in college. Despite his worry, Dad was a pillar of strength for us and especially for her. After her mastectomy, she decided against the added trauma of breast-reconstruction surgery. Mom told me that in their entire marriage Dad never suggested that she even change her hairstyle. Instead he has always told her how beautiful she is. And thats why she thinks fighting cancer wasnt as hard as it could have been. She knew that no matter what, Dad and his love would be there. Our father was a struggling lawyer, but I always knew he was special. He never criticized, but used praise to bring out our best. Hed say, If you pour water on flowers, they flourish. If you dont give them water, they die. I remember as a child I said something unkind about somebody, and my father said, Any time you say something unpleasant about somebody else, its a reflection of you. He explained that if I looked for the best in people, I would get the best in return. Ive tried to follow this principle in running my company. Dads also always been very understanding. At 15, I started a magazine. It was taking up a great deal of my time, and the headmaster of my school gave me a choice: stay in school or leave to work on my magazine. I decided to leave, and Dad tried to sway me from my decision, as any good father would. When he realized I had made up my mind, he said, Richard, when I was 23, my dad persuaded me to go into law. And Ive always regretted it. I wanted to be an archeologist, but I didnt pursue my dream. You know what you want. Go fulfill that dream. As it turned out, my little publication went on to become Student, a national magazine for young people in the U.K. My wife and I have two children, and Id like to think we are bringing them up in the same way Dad raised me. Richard Branson is chairman of the Virgin Group of Companies, which owns Virgin Atlantic Airways, Virgin Entertainment and Virgin Cola. John Lewis: Have Hope As a young boy, I used to complain about having to get up so early to work on our farm in Troy, Ala. One day my father took me aside and said, Son, we have to do this in order to make things better. Hang in there and things will improve. Dad was an optimist by nature, and he instilled in me this concept of hope about the future. He also taught us that we couldnt just be concerned about our own circumstances. We also had to be concerned about others. I saw my father always giving and always sharing. We didnt have that much to share or to give, but he had faith that things would work out-even under tremendously difficult conditions. There was a lot of fear back then in Alabama. Segregation was very rigid. Water fountains for us were marked Colored, and we could only walk on one side of the street. But somehow he survived under these circumstances without becoming bitter, angry or hateful. My father passed away in 1977. But if he had lived to see my election to Congress he would have been very proud and happy. Id like to believe that hes looking down and watching me today. Cruiser, a springer spaniel, frequently jumped into the pool just for fun. Cindy was in the garage around the corner from the patio. She was talking on the phone to a friend who had called to chat. But suddenly Cindy sensed that something was wrong. The splash she had heard was followed by dead silence. Quickly Cindy said goodbye and hung up the phone. She hurried around the corner and saw-to her horror-her 17-month-old daughter, Kyla, floating face down in the 1530-foot pool. Cruiser was running back and forth along the edge of the pool, trying to save the child by grabbing Kylas clothing with his teeth. Most mothers would have simply jumped into the pool and pulled their child to safety. But Cindy Dunlop was not like most mothers. She was paralyzed from the chest down as a result of an automobile crash 12 years before. Because of her disability, Cindy had been forced to adjust to life in a wheelchair. At 90 pounds, Cindy swam regularly for physical therapy but needed assistance getting in and out of the pool. Now, on October 7, 1986, Kylas life rested in her mothers hands. Cindy didnt have time to phone for help. There wasnt anyone nearby, anyway. The Dunlops lived in the isolated desert town of EI Mirage, California. Cindys husband, Ron, had gone off to work several hours earlier. The nearest rescue squad was 25 miles away. And the nearest neighbor was half a mile down the road. Knowing she couldnt grab Kyla from the edge of the pool, Cindy had only one choice. She drove her wheelchair straight into the chilly water. As the chair sank, Cindy began to swim over to Kyla, who was still floating, face down, 25 feet away. When Cindy reached her daughter, she managed to flip her over. Then she grabbed her and towed her to the edge of the pool. Kylas eyes were closed and her lips were blue. She wasnt breathing. Frantic with fear and panic, Cindy tried to lift Kyla up and out of the water while holding onto the edge of the pool with one arm. She was so limp and heavy, I couldnt, she later said. Cindy realized she would have to find another way to get Kyla out. She took a deep breath and let herself sink to the bottom of the pool. With her arms under Kylas body and her fingertips gripping the edge of the pool, Cindy used her head to push the child upward. She managed to lift Kyla out of the water, but couldnt get her over the edge onto the concrete. When she tried, the little girl fell backward into the pool. Desperately, Cindy kept trying. Finally, by keeping her head straighter, she was able to roll Kyla up and out of the water. Then, propping herself up on her elbows at the edge of the pool, Cindy reached out and turned Kyla toward her. Her daughter still wasnt breathing. With fear gripping her heart, Cindy pinched the childs nose shut and began puffing short breaths into her mouth. At first, there was no response. Again and again Cindy puffed breaths into Kylas mouth. Finally, Kylas body lurched, and she began to cough and spit up water. Then the little girl started to cry. It was the greatest thing in the world to hear that scream, Cindy said. Cindy called 911, and she and Kyla were rushed to a hospital. Cindys feet, elbows, and hands were badly scraped from crawling across the concrete. Kyla, however, was fine. Before long, she was giggling and playing as if nothing had happened.
