Old People Should Not be Forced by Law to Retire There has long been a debate about whether old people should be forced to retire from work at the age of 55 or 60, regardless of their own wishes. People in favor of this say that old people, having worked for over thirty years, should not go on working, because physically they are not as strong, healthy and energetic as they used to be, and mentally they are not able to endure the same pressure of having to work to earn a living as young people are. Personally, I do not agree with this point of view for the following reasons: First, it seems to me that no one should be forced to change his/her lifestyle unless he/she has committed a crime. People, whether they are old or young, should have the right to decide their own way of life. Just as young people can choose to stop working and enjoy their leisure time as long as they can make ends meet, old people should also be allowed to continue working, provided that they are still qualified for their jobs. Second, there are many jobs that are especially suitable for old people, such as jobs that call for more experience and wisdom than physical power. With their rich experience in both work and life, many old people would make good consultants, instructors, coaches, doctors and psychologists, to mention only a few. Last but not least, some old people do not go on working simply for economic reasons. It seems to them that there is more to work than just making money. They simply enjoy working as an indispensable part of their lives. Some of them even develop various mental and physical problems after retiring from work, and it seems that the best way to keep them in good health and high spirits is to allow them to keep working. All in all, I believe that not only should old peoples physical conditions be taken into consideration but also their psychological needs should be respected. Therefore, letting them do whatever they are fond and capable of doing will make them much happier than forcing them to stay isolated from society and endure loneliness in their twilight years. On Team Spirit We are living in a globalized world and the crosscultural communications are increasing nowadays In other words, we have never been so closely connected with each other in the human histories As a philosopher has pointed out, nobody is an isolated island If we want to have a bright future, we need more cooperation for the development Therefore, team spirit is very important It is anability that people can understand each other and cooperate with each other for the successful completion of some important tasks We need such kind of ability in particular during the globalization for several reasonsFirst of all, team spirit offers us a platform where we can operate our collective talent to work out the best Only when we work effectively together can we have the best chance to get the success Taking the 2008 Beijing Olympics for example, I think the success of the event first goes to the superb team spirit of the organizers and millions of volunteers So many people work hard and cooperate well for the single aim and the solitary goal: an exceptional Olympics for the whole world A lot of student volunteers in Beijing are committed and work tirelessly during the hot summer. History has witnessed their brilliant teamwork and valuable contributionsWhat is more, team spirit is quite useful for personal careerAs young students,we must learn the core and sharpen our skills in the team If you work in a company, most of the time you have to finish or design a huge project with your colleagues Each person can contribute their wisdom to the completion of the task You cannot do it so well singlehandedly When we watch the Olympic Games on TV, we are so amazed by the excellent performances of the players If they want to win the gold medals, they must compete as one person and exercise their own part well for the whole success So we can say the team spirit is the secret of successFinally, team spirit is the symbol of national power and strength As we all know, the Chinese delegation has won the most medals during the 2008 Olympics and all Chinese people are so proud of our country Another example is the touching power of the team spirit in the Sichuan earthquake We were moved by the perseverance and persistence of the rescue workers, who were eager to help their compatriotsIn conclusion, team spirit is an important ability and skill in the 21th century because we are all faced with the globalization and the question of how to live betterTherefore,we must learn to work well in the team and let the team spirit guide us to successHow to Handle Stress in Our Life?In this competitive society, people cannot avoid the stress from the bustle and hustle of modern life Appropriate pressure is the motivation for our progress, while too much stress will have harmful effects on our health and work We cannot avoid it, so we must learn to with it properlyIn the first place, it is important to have a correct understanding about stress We are now in a world where the fittest will survive, and its better to ensure survival than being defeated But to individuals, the social environment will not change We have to realize both the positive and negative aspects of stress It is like a doubleedged sword, which may be used by us, or may hurt us The key point is whether you hold the blade or the handle We can take it as a motive force for us to make progress, make full use of it and avoid being hurt by itIn the second place, people have to adjust their own mood and mentality We should say to ourselves that I like challenges and I am strong, but never think I am a loser or I cannot stand that any more The positive hint will change your attitude, and then affect the result of your behavior And it is also of great importance to cherish what you have got The common weak point of the human being is that he longs for what he cannot get, but does not value and protect what he has at the moment Most people are thinking about how to own more, such as social status, power, honor and so onAt last the more they want , the more pressure they get If they can give something up, they will feel betterFinally, some practical measures can help us to handle stress in our life Having a plan on the career, increasing the competitiveness and learning to control your time will do much help to reduce the stress It is advisable to separate work from life Work hard when you are at work and have a good rest when you are free In other words, there must be a boundaryTo sum up, the stress in our life is inevitable, and we must learn to handle it effectively We must have a right understanding about it, try our best to adjust our own mentality and use practical ways to reduce itThe Reasons for Unharmonious Teacher-student Relationship师生关系不和谐的原因As many former college students remember, when they were in college, students were fond of discussing problems with professors in their field in class. Professors were oftentimes invited to participate in students extra-curricular activities. According to those former college students, at that time students deemed professors as close friends that they could take into their confidence. However, both college students and professors are frustrated by the new type of teacher-student relationship. On various occasions, students absorb themselves in their own business such as reading novels, sending short messages, sleeping and etc., while professors are delivering their lectures. Despite the fact that many professors would like to avail every means to persuade students to actively participate in class discussion, students seem to be indifferent. Undoubtedly, there are different factors that account for this unharmonious relationship. As for me, credit system should take the blame.Firstly, with the adoption of credit system, students are likely to perceive that the goal of attending class is to earn credits. To quote a famous professors comments, “Are there any students who are willing to attend lectures in line with their own interests? I think to earn credits ranks top in their priorities to attend lectures.” Motivated by this mindset, students are likely to lose interest in the courses they choose. What matters is not what they will learn from professors; instead, they only show interest in how they can pass final exams with minimum efforts. Consequently, so long as they can perform successfully in final exams and earn required credits, whether they concentrate on class or not is not a big deal.Secondly, the adoption of credit system also results in some changes in professors mindset. Given that students perceive attending lectures to earn credits, professors would realize that no matter how hard they try to persuade students to participate in class, they are only rewarded by students indifference. When these professors can not find fulfillment in the interaction with students in class, they are so frustrated that many of them will pay more attention to their research so as to be promoted to a higher rank. In consequence, professors will allocate less time to prepare for the coming lectures. Gradually, professors would find no passion, no fulfillment, and no incentive in class, which is to the detriment of teacher-student relationship in any sense. On all accounts, when college students and professors are bonded by several credits, the once sacred relationship is reduced to a trade relationship: students pay to earn credits and professors provide services by giving lectures. How can we expect an intimate relationship in this circumstance?Should We Celebrate Western Festivals? With the booming of the globalization and the increase of the inter-cultural communications, a lot of Western cultural phenomena can be seen in China, among which there is the popularity of the Western festivals like Christmas, April Fools Days and Valentines Day and so on. The staunch lovers of these festivals are young people such as the high school and college students.Attitudes toward the Western festivals are among the general public. Some people say that we should keep away from them and just leave them there. Other people contend that we need to be open-minded to the foreign festivals and learn some Western culture from them. As far as I am concerned, we should value our traditional festivals, which have been an integral part of the Chinese culture, and meanwhile, we can have a taste of the Western festivals just for fun. There are several reasons.First of all, the traditional festivals have been the particular icons of Chinese culture. We have a lot of festivals such as Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Dragon Boat Festival and so on. They are the most precious intangible cultural heritage that we have carried down from our ancestors. We, as a new generation in China, should shoulder the responsibility of protecting and rejuvenating them so that our offspring can enjoy and learn them in the long future. As we all know, the government also attaches importance to the traditional festivals. People in China will have a day off when a traditional festival comes.Secondly, the traditional festivals are offering us the most important occasions or family reunion and the expansion of social connections. As is mentioned before, people do not have to go to work when they have the traditional festivals. As a result, they can go home and have a family party. They can fully enjoy the domestic bliss thanks to the traditional festivals. What is more, the traditional festivals provide lucrative opportunities for the travel industry. People like to do traveling when they have some holidays. The economy also benefits from the traditional festivals. Finally, a lot of foreigners are fascinated with our traditional festivals. I think this is conducive to cross-cultural communication. We do not have to ward off the western festivals as if they were threats. We can enjoy our own culture and have a taste of the western festivals so that we can improve our strength. To sum up, the world is getting smaller and smaller. We should protect our culture on the one hand and on the other hand, we can also celebrate the western festivals for the sake of cross-cultural communication.Should We Return to Complex Chinese Characters? As we know, the Chinese mainland adopts, the simplified Chinese characters system, while Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao still use the ancient traditional character system. In recent years, a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that we should resume the ancient traditional character system. Do you think it is necessary? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic: As one famous professor stated,“One can only appreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese literature through the complex Chinese characters” What the professor wants to convey is that complex Chinese characters are manifestation of traditional Chinese aestheticsHowever, since the foundation of the PRC, China began to adopt simplified Chinese characters,so that illiteracy can be more easily eliminatedUndoubtedly, the introduction of simplified Chinese characters contributes to Chinas modernization So when a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that we should return to Complex Chinese Characters, ongoing debates ensued with vehemence Personally,it is impractical to return to Complex Chinese Characters, but individuals can voluntarily make efforts to know Complex Chinese CharactersFirstly, since the simplified characters have played an indispensable role in peoples lives, we will have to pay the price if we return to Complex Chinese CharactersTo be specific, education administration has to bear the burden of changing textbooks;the corporate world will have to change their advertisements, contracts and other documents;the government has to change their seals, documents, agreements and treaties with foreign nations Of course there are other costs resulting from the return to Complex Chinese CharactersBut the question lies in who are willing to bear the costsIn some impoverished areas, many families can not afford to receive education;when the global economy is reduced to a slow-down, the corporate world is making efforts to cut costsTherefore, I perceive the policy of returning to Complex Chinese Characters will trigger oppositions from the publicSecondly, considering the amount of complex Chinese characters, can all the Chinese learn to recognize them overnight? While students have the time to learn Complex Chinese Characters, what about people in other domains? The corporate world can not afford to interrupt their business, government officials and civil servants can not be distracted from running our country, doctors and nurses have to be at work in case that emergency arises, to list three typical domains that will be affected by the policyAdmittedly, returning to Complex Chinese Characters will help preserve traditional Chinese culture When China becomes more involved in the world, western cultures, especially American culture, have influenced Chinese people at an unprecedented level Many young people look to learning foreign culture as fashionable However, the obvious benefits can not make us embrace the policy with open arms, for we should also bear in mind whether the policy is feasibleShould College Students Own Private Cars?大学生是否应该拥有私人汽车? Private cars, often regarded as luxury goods, are reported to have been bought by many college students or by their parents as birthday gifts in the recent. This phenomenon can also find its expression in the drivers license rush for many college students. During summer or winter vacation, sometimes even on weekends, many college students would attend driving courses. Though learning to drive can give college graduates a cutting edge in job market, I do not think it is necessary for college students to own private cars in this particular episode of lives.Firstly, according to some news coverage, the majority of private cars owned by college students are purchased by their parents instead of by themselves. Of course, there are some wealthy families that can easily afford private cars, but it does nothing to change the fact that college students rely on their parents for tuition fees and living expenditure. In terms of personal growth, owning private cars bought by parents do not help college students cherish the value of self-reliance. Some educationalists worry that in the long run those students tend to become lazy, which is harmful to college students improvement.Secondly, private cars are not basic necessities without which college students can not carry through their pursuit of higher degrees. Both professors and college students can figure out the underlying reason for some students owning private cars is to show off. As I have mentioned above, the majority of college students still depend on their parents for tuition fees and living expenditure, but owning private cars contribute nothing to showing off their own personal highlight. In actuality, we do admire that those private car owners have wealthy parents, but at the bottom of our heart we severely detest those classmates. We can easily find out that showing off indicates the very insecurity and lack of confidence in studies and personal cultivation. Furthermore, as some college students are still yet to be mature, they can easily become jealous. For those immature students, they are more likely to form the belief that the society is unfair. In conclusion, as college students can not provide for themselves, how can they dare to ask their parents to buy cars for them? d Owning private cars only indicates inner insecurity an l
