Unit 2 Wildlife Protection ReadingHow Daisy Learned to Help Wildlife Honorable judges, good morning. Im so glad to have the chance to present my lesson in front of you. I hope you will not feel so bored that you cannot wait to enjoy your lunch. Okay, lets begin now.Part Analysis of Teaching Material First of all, let me talk about the teaching material I used in this lesson: New Senior For China Book 2, Unit 4 Wildlife Protection. This unit is talking about a warm-discussed topic: wildlife protection, introducing the current situation in which endangered species are and attaching a great importance to protecting them. After learning this unit, Ss will have a general image of the compelling situation and their awareness of wildlife protection will be aroused. In the warming-up part, there is a report being offered and it lists three kinds of animals, and each of them followed with some detail information. In this unit, the reading skill focus on collecting detail information. Ss should be capable to use such skill in their further study after learning this unit.Part Teaching Aims: (1) Knowledge aims: Let the Ss know some basic information about the endangered animals and wildlife situation and protection.(2) Ability aims: a. Encourage Ss to think about and express their attitudes towards the wildlife and the wildlife protection. b. Enhance Ss reading ability, such as skimming for general idea, scanning for specific information.(3) Emotional aims: a. Help Ss understand the importance of the wildlife protection and make them be more active in helping wildlife.b. Develop Ss sense of cooperative learning. Part Teaching Content(1) a. Pre-reading: design a game to involve Ss into the lesson and make a little discussionb. While-reading: demand of two different type of readingfast reading and careful readingc. Post-reading: give some questions to Ss and go to a rich discussion naturally(2) Teaching Key and Difficult Points: a. Enhance the students reading skills in the passage. b. How to use the reading skills to make the passage better to be understood. (3)Teaching Aids: Multi-media computer; software: PowerPointPart Teaching methods: Task-based teaching and learningCo-operative learningPart Teaching ProceduresStep 1: Lead-in Task 1: A competition of guessing gameShow some hints on the screen to the Ss to have a guess, what animal it is. Encourage Ss to discuss with their partners and then solve the questions together. (Purpose:To enliven the atmosphere of the class and get the Ss to involve into the class.) Task 2: DiscussionTell them that the lovely animals are endangered. Set up the question for the Ss to discuss: What on earth mainly cause these wild animals in danger of disappearing? Ss may mention the following reasons: Food shortage, pollution, destruction of habitats, and over-hunting. Meanwhile, I will continuous ask the question:How can we protect the wildlife?(Purpose:To arouse the students awareness of envoronment protecting.)Step 2: Reading Now lets read the passage together and see how Daisy learned to help wildlife.I: Fast Reading Task 1: Skimming for the general idea1. Read the passage quickly and silently. Try to find out the main idea of the passage. Then answer the following question: The passage is mainly about _.A. some protection of wildlifeB. a journey of a flying carpetC. Daisys wonderful experience with some animals Suggested answer: C2. Ask the Ss to sum up the main idea by themselves and the all component in their summary should contain who, how, where, whatu Who is the character of the story? u How did she travel?u Which places did she travel to?u What animals did she visit? Suggested answer: Daisy took a flying carpet to travel and talked with some animals, which made her know the importance of the wildlife protection.Task 2: Scanning for specific informationFinish the true ( T ) or false ( F ) questions, and try to correct the false.1. Daisy saw many antelopes in Tibet.2. Daisys sweater was made of sheep wool.3. The elephant used to be well protected in Zimbabwe. 4. The farmers in Zimbabwe get much money from the elephants and rhinos now.5. This is a real story in Daisys life. Suggested answers: F F F T F (Purpose: To train Ss to read through the passage quickly and get some special information neglecting other information, by using the reading skills of skimming and scanning.)II: Careful Reading Read the passage carefully and answer the following questions.Paragraph 1 1. How did the antelope feel? Sad.2. Who is hunting and killing the Tibetan antelopes? People. 3. Why are people hunting and killing the Tibetan antelopes? In order to get the wool which is used to make sweaters.Paragraph 2 1. How did the elephant feel? The elephant felt excited.2. How did life improve for the animals? Past: Farmers used to hunt them because they destroyed farms. Now: The elephants are no longer killed by the farmers for that.3. How did life improve for the farmers in Zimbabwe? The government helped and farmers make money from tourism.Paragraph 3&4 1. Why does the monkey rub itself? Because this protects it from mosquitoes.2. Why is the thick rainforest important for animals? Because different kinds of animals can live together.(Purpose: To have a better understanding of the passage.) Step 3: Post-reading What can we do to protect endangered animals?Measures to protect the endangered animals:1. Protect the environment2. Build conservation zones3. Forbid people from killing endangered animals4. Rise fund to protect them.Step 4: Homework assignment1. Based on the discussion about what should we do to protect the wild animals? List your own opinions and organize your words to write a short passage about your solutions. 2. Choose one story from the reading passage and retell it.
