He was one of the people who made Silicon Valley(硅谷) the capital of technological invention. Author and business consultant Jim Collins once called Jobs the “Beethoven of business”. When asked what Steve Jobs will be best remembered for, many of us would name a particular product:the iPod, the iPhone or the iPad, for example. But in the eyes of Eric Jackson, a reporter with Forbes magazine, Jobs brought the world much more than these popular devices(装置). Here are some of the lessons he taught us: 1. The most lasting inventions mix art and science. Jobs pointed out that the team members working with Apple were trained in anthropology(人类学), art, history, and poetry. He believed this was important in making Apples products stand out. 2. Never fear failure. Jobs was fired by the successor he himself chose. It was one of the most public embarrassments(尴尬) of the last 30 years in business. However, Jobs didnt hide away or try to get a new job. He picked himself up and got back to work. 3. You cant look forward to connecting the dotsyou can only look backward. This means that, however much we try to plan things ahead of time, life is always full of unexpected things. What seems like bitter pain and defeat could turn out to sow the seeds of unimaginable success in years to come. You cant connect the dots looking forward. But you have to trust that all the dots will be connected in the future. 4. Listen to that voice in tile back of your head that tells you if youre on the right track or not. Most of us simply decide that were going to work in finance or become a doctor because its what our parents tell us to do. Whatever your voice is telling you, it is smart to listen to itlike Jobs did. Just as Caroline and Amy from his empire put it, “Steve was one of the most inspiring yet toughest boss everbut who else could have built Apple? What Steve left is sure to inspire generations of creative thinkers to think differently. His influence will be felt throughout the world.”53. From the passage, we learn that _. A. Steve Jobs is the first founder of Silicon Valley B. Steve Jobs is only remembered for the popular device iPhone C. mixing art and science is really important in making Apples products noticeable D. all the team members in Silicon Valley are trained in anthropology, art, history and poetry54. According to the passage, which words can be best used to describe Steve Jobs? A. Popular but sensitive. B. Brave but stubborn. C. Different and reliable. D. Determined and inspiring. 55. What does the phrase “picked himself up”(Paragraph 3) most probably mean? A. Became excited. B. Refused to talk. C. Got others help. D. Cheered himself up.56. Whats the writers main purpose of writing the passage? A. To introduce readers the life story of Steve Jobs. B. To tell readers Steve Jobs is the “Beethoven of business”. C. To encourage readers to learn from Steve Jobs life experience. D. To persuade readers that they shouldnt always-follow what parents tell them to do. C Music is really powerful. Without music, movies would lose some of their attraction. No one disagree with the powerful effect music has on individuals. Whether this effect is positive or negative, however, often depends on the type of music listened to. And researches have shown that certain types of music own the ability to relieve ones anxiety, improve brain development in children, uplift ones memory and help patients to recover.just to name a few. It should come as no surprise then, that researchers from the Tufts University have found that background music has the ability to directly affect ones eating habits as well. They counted the bites of food individuals took at meals while listening to different types of music. The diners “ate at an average(平均) rate of 3.9 bites per minute”, with about a third of the diners requesting more food after clearing their plates. On the other hand, with “spirited tunes, ”the diners “sped up to an average of 5.1 bites per minute! ”Not surprising however, when “calming flute instrumental” were played, the eating speed of the diners slowed “to 3.2 bites per minuteand the bites became smaller”. They didnt request second helpings and praised that the food tasted better. Studies have clearly stated that one safe way of losing weight includes eating slowly. Since it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to tell the brain that its full, eating slowly will help you to eat to satisfactionwithout overdoing it. With this important piece of information then, it leads one to believe that with the use of calming background instrumental music, one can slow their food digestion, “retraining” both the stomach and the brain to take in less food which could lead to weight lost. Is there any truth to this theory? One will never know unless they try it themselves. Even if it doesnt work for you, at least youll achieve a bit of relaxing and pleasant environment during your meal periods. A great meal with great musicwho could ask for anything more?57. Which of the following is NOT the benefit of listening to certain types of music according to the passage? A. Strengthening ones body. B. Easing ones anxiety. C. Increasing ones memory. D. Improving childrens brain development. 58. The research reported from the Tufts University showed that _. A. background music makes the food served delicious and lovely B. the types of music people listened to could exactly show their eating habits C. background music could produce a comfortable eating environment for people D. background music could influence peoples eating speed and how much they eat59. Music can help people lose weight by _. A. burning their fat B. slowing their eating speed C. changing their attention D. making them bored with food60. Which of the following statements agrees with the writers view in the passage? A. People will eat less if they dont like the background music. B. Every type o f music has the power to affect people positively. C. Most of the restaurants now offer background music for their customers. D. Though were not sure whether listening to music can help lose weight, its worth a try.D One day a woman spotted a beggar sitting on the corner. The man was elderly, unshaven and ragged. Passers-by wanted nothing to do with him. But the woman smiled. “Are you hungry?” she asked. The man slowly looked up. This was a woman clearly used to the finer things in life. Her coat was new. She looked like that she had never missed a meal in her life. “No, ” he answered sarcastically(讥讽地). “Ive just come from dining with the president. Now go away. ”To his surprise, the woman continued standing. And her smile became even broader. “What are you doing, lady?” he asked angrily. “I said to leave me alone. ” Just then a policeman came up. “Is there any problem, maam?” He asked. “No problem here, officer,” the woman answered. “Im just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?” The officer scratched(抓) his head. “Thats old Jack. Hes been around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?” “See that cafeteria over there?” She asked. “Im going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold. ” “Are you crazy, lady? I dont want to go in the
