The Jetsons were a family of the future. George Jetson went to work in a rocket, and his wife Jane shopped for groceries on television. The Jetsons had a housekeeper named Rosie. Rosie washed dishes and vacuumed, but she wasnt an ordinary housekeeper. Rosie was a robot. At the time, some viewers thought the cartoon might predict the real future. In some ways it did. For example, some people shop on line. But we dont have robots as housekeepers. At least, not yet. Robots do various jobs today. They are often used in manufacturing. They paint and assemble cars and put together electronic devices. Also, robots are used for jobs that are difficult or dangerous for humans. For example, they were used to explore the planet Mars, to investigate the interior of the great pyramids in Egypt, and to search the wreckage of the World Trade Center in New York City. Some robots in use today entertain people. Sonys robot dog Aibo is a popular toy. It never bites, barks, or makes messes. There are also robot cats and mice. Samsung Corporation has even made a robot goldfish. There is a robot bartender that can make drinks and tell jokes. There are robots that can do housework. Several vacuum cleaning robots are available. However, not many people buy these products. Why not? The main reason is cost. These robots are expensive. Another reason is that robot cleaners dont always do a good job. A third reason is power. Most of these robots use batteries for power, and the batteries do not last long without recharging. Some engineers believe that it is not practical to build all-purpose robots in the near future. They think each family will own several tiny robots, each designed to do one chore. There might be one robot to do the dusting, one to wash the windows, and one to clean the floors. Today, like the Jetsons, we are living in the “future,” but few of us have robots in our houses. Unfortunately, a humanlike robot like Rosie that can cook gourmet meals, walk the dog, and change the babys diapers is still many, many years away. 11. What was Rosies relationship to George Jetson?A. She was his wife. B. She was his daughter. C. She was his housekeeper. D. She was his mother.12. The Jetsons accurately predicted the way some people today?A. Go to work B. Prepare their meals C. Do their shoppingD. Do his homework13. Aibo is a robot A. Dog B. Cat C. Goldfish D. Bear14. The speaker gives examples of robots used in dangerous jobs. Which of these is also a good example of that? A. Robots waiting on tables at a restaurant B. Robots washing the windows of a tall building C. Robots cleaning swimming poolsD. Robots cooking for the children15. What is the main reason people do NOT buy a household robot today?A. They are not safe. B. They are too expensive. C. They are too hard to use. D. They are not friendly. Passage 2 The American Revolution was not a revolution in the sense of a radical or total change. It was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in France and Russia, when both were already independent nations. Significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. What happened was accelerate evolution rather than outright revolution. During the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. Most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on. Americas War of Independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. One was Canada, which received its first large influx of English-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the United States. Another was Australia, which became a penal colony now that America was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. The third newcomer the United States based itself squarely on republican principles. Yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. In some states, notably Connecticut and Rhode Island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already existing. British officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and Parliament. 16. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A The United States: An Isolated Community B Breathtaking Events During the American Revolution C Canada and the American War of Independence D The American Revolution: Evolution Not Revolution17. In the first paragraph, what does the author suggest about the French and Russian Revolutions? A They were explosive and abrupt. B They were ineffective. C They involved only those people living in urban areas. D They led to the release of all political prisoners. 18. In line 5, what does the author mean by “people went on working and pra
