1 三时系念佛事 三时系念佛事 Zhong Feng Three Times Observance 简介 净土法门是佛教修行法门之一 而 三时 系念 更为净土法门殊胜的行持之一 此 法门由元朝中峰国师所提倡 主要目的 在规劝我们 依净土念佛的修持而得 度 同时也依弥陀之愿 劝导亡者往生 西方极乐世界 永离茫茫业海与轮回之 苦 是生亡两利的佛事 三时 有两个 说法 一指早晨 日中 日没之时 一 指诠一切有 诠一切空 诠一切中等三 时 系念 指身 口 意三者观 阿弥 陀经 经文而系念往生阿弥陀佛极乐净 土 三时系念 旨在阐述即禅即净 用 法有两种 一名 三时系念轨范 这 是结会自修用的 一名 三时系念佛 事 这是作法度亡用的 此二者皆由 诵经 念佛 开示 行道 忏悔 发 愿 唱赞等七部份组成 且每一时佛事 亦包含此七个项目 第一时大义 开示行者 包括生亡 两者 三点 一 极乐世界无有娑婆世界的众多 苦恼 修行人若要寻求归向极乐世界之 路 必须放下万缘 一心系念弥陀圣 号 便可超脱生死之苦 二 众生所以受苦无尽 皆因被无 明与贪欲所覆障 不识本具之清净佛 性 故而造诸恶业 若能了知此心与阿 弥陀佛之心无异 当下便是净土 三 众生欲往生阿弥陀佛国者 需 信 愿 行三者具足 将弥陀圣号持念 至一心不乱 其人临命终时 心无贪 恋 意不颠倒 即得往生极乐国土 第二时大义 一 鼓励行者应及早发菩提心精进 念佛 若不立坚固愿往生西方 则永远 在六道中轮回 难有出期 Introduction The Pure Land Dharma Door is one of the many Buddhist cultivation Dharma Doors The Three Times Observance is a particularly prominent cultivation practice of the Pure Land Dharma Door Developed by Dharma Master and Imperial Advisor Zhong Feng during the Yuan Dynasty its main purpose is to encourage us to chant Buddha s name so as to cross over to the other shore It is also intended to persuade those who have passed away to seek rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss and thus permanently get out of the sea of karmic retribution and transcend the cycle of birth and death It is therefore a dharma practice that benefits both the living and the deceased There are two explanations for the phrase Three Times One refers to the division of a day into morning mid day and evening The other refers to three moments the moment everything is viewed as suchness the moment everything is viewed empty and the moment everything is viewed in the middle way Observance means to align one s body speech and mind with the Amitabha Sutra with a focus on attaining re birth in Amitabha s World of Ultimate Bliss Three Times Observance intends to illustrate that Chan Dhyana Zen is Pure Land and Pure Land is Chan It can be used in two ways One is Three Times Observance Practice Guidance which is used for self cultivation The other is Three Times Observance Dharma Service which is used to help those who have passed away cross over to the other shore It is composed of three periods each containing the following seven elementss Sutra reciting Amitabha Buddha name chanting dharma talk walking meditation repentance vow and singing songs of praising Amitabha The three periods can be summarized as follows The purpose of the first period is to enlighten both the living and deceased to the following truths The World of Ultimate Bliss does not have any of the afflictions that we have in the Saha world Any cultivator who seeks rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss should put down everything and completely focus on chanting Amitabha s name All sentient beings in the Saha World create all kinds of karma and suffer endlessly because their True Nature is hidden by their ignorance and greed Pure Land is right here if we can understand that there is no difference between our True Mind and that of Amitabha Anyone who seeks rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss must have the three elements faith vow and action and also practice chanting Amitabah s name until he she has achieved single 2 二 叮咛行者将佛事之殊胜功德回 向给亡者 为其洗除业垢 增长善根 令其速生净土 三 劝勉行者应诚心忏悔自己往昔 所作诸恶业 并发愿广度众生 共成佛 道 第三时大义 一 告之行者一句阿弥陀佛名号能 灭八万亿劫生死众苦 若能摄心念佛 便可往生极乐之邦 二 示告行者 南无阿弥陀佛 六字 洪名的殊胜功勋 众生昏乱的妄心如浊 水 六字洪名如宝珠投入浊水 能使妄 心随念寂灭 照见本自清净佛性 三 勉励行者听此三时系念阿弥陀 佛洪名法要后 要信受奉行 念佛功德 必功不唐捐 三时系念佛事虽说是度亡用 其实 法益遍及生亡 甚至可以说生者利益更 大 因为生者若以至诚心读诵听讲 并 发愿奉行 必能托质莲胎 圆满无上菩 提 mindedness He or she will be reborn in the World of Ultimate Bliss if at the moment of death has a clear mind with no attachments The purpose of the second period is to Urge cultivator to bring forth his or her Bodhi mind as soon as possible develop firm determination to go to the World of Ultimate Bliss and chant Amitabha s name diligently It will be difficult for one to transcend the cycle of life and death if he or she doesn t have this firm determination Remind the cultivator to share the wonderful merits of this dharma service with the deceased so as to help them pay back their karmic debt grow virtuous roots and quickly attain re birth in the Pure Land Urge the cultivator to sincerely repent all previous misdeeds and commit to help all beings cross over to the other shore and achieve Buddhahood together The purpose of the third period is to Inform the cultivator that chanting Amitabha s name sincerely even once will help eliminate eighty billion kalpas of suffering Single minded name chanting will help one be re born in the World of Ultimate Bliss Explain the wondrous benefits of Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo A sentient being s delusional mind is like muddy water while Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo is like a pearl put into the water It purges delusional thoughts immediately and illuminates the pure Buddha Nature Remind the cultivator to believe hold and practice the Three Times Observance of Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo after learning about the essence of this practice The merits gained from single mindedly chanting Amitabha s name will never be in vain Even though the Three Times Observance dharma service is intended to help the deceased cross over to the other shore it benefits both the living and the deceased In fact it benefits the living more if he or she can read recite and listen with a sincere and pure mind and commit to hold and practice the method He or she will be re born in a lotus flower and achieve the perfect supreme Bodhi mind 3 Zhong Feng Three Times Observance Dharma Service 其坛应对灵铺设 座上供接引佛像一尊 罗列 香华灯烛楗椎 引罄两把 另设迎请法座 众 齐集 擂鼓 斋主礼请毕 鸣击人打迎请 敲 上下班引罄四下 对面问讯 向上问讯 斋主 举香已 鸣击人前行 斋主后走至迎请处 鸣 击人对面立法座前 斋主将香插炉内 向法师 作礼一拜已 鸣击四下 对面向上问讯已 转 身外走 法师在引罄后行 斋主又后 至坛前 立定 举香赞云 Dharma Service Arrangements The name plate of the deceased should be placed across from the shrine A statue of Amitabha Buddha with His right arm lowered which represents elevating us into His world is placed on the shrine Incense flowers candles and two dharma service bells are arranged in front of the alter A seat is arranged specifically for the dharma master The drum is beaten after the group assembles The host of the dharma service formally bows to the group The Bell ringer formally bows to the group and rings the dharma service bell for four times All bow to each other and then bow to the shrine The dharma service host ignites a piece of incense and holds it up The Bell ringer walks forward The host follows him or her to the welcome spot The bell ringer stops in front of the dharma master s seat The host puts the burning incense in the incense burner and then bows once to the dharma master The drum is beaten and the bell is rung for four times The host bows to the shrine and moves to the side The dharma master follows the bell ringer leaving the welcome spot The host follows behind All walk forward and stop in front of the shrine The dharma master holds up a burning incense and leads the song of praise 戒定真香 戒定真香 焚起冲天上 Jie Ding Zhen Xiang Fen Qi Chong Tian Shang 弟子虔诚 爇在金炉放 Di Zi Qian Cheng Re Zai Jin Lu Fang 顷刻氤氲 即遍满十方 Qin Ke Yin Yun Ji Bian Man Shi Fang 昔日耶输免难消灾障 Xi Ri Ye Shu Mian Nan Xiao Zai Zhang 南无香云盖菩萨摩诃萨 三遍 Na Mo Xiang Yun Gai Pu Sa Mo He Sa Thrice Sing Praise of True Incense of Precepts and Samadhi The True Incense of Precepts and Samadhi Burns to reach the heavens above As we the devout and sincere disciples Offered it in a golden censer The fragrance instantly permeates the ten directions As previously Yasodhara avoided calamity and averted disasters Namo Incense Cloud Canopy Bodhisattva Mahasattva Thrice 唱毕师白云 觉海虚空起 Jue Hai Xu Kong Qi 娑婆业浪流 So Po Ye Lang Liu 若人登彼岸 Ruo Ren Deng Bi An 极乐有归舟 Ji Le You Gui Zhou Dharma Master chants As soon as the void arises suddenly from the Sea of Enlightenment Instantly the Saha world appears and karmic currents start flowing For the ones who seek the other shore There is the ferry to the Land of Ultimate Bliss 合掌 对面问询 在转身向上 陀 字问 讯 佛 字起 念佛至往生莲位前 香灯发 The Dharma Master puts his or her palms together and bows to the group Then turns around and prostrates at the word Tuo 4 香 主法 斋主上香毕 对面站 煞板 and stands up at the word Fo Chants Amitabha s name while proceeding towards to the name plate of the deceased stops in front of the nameplate and offers the incense 南无阿弥陀佛 Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo 唱此佛号至牌位前接唱 Sing Na Mo A Mi Tuo Fo Let us take refuge in Amitabha Buddha Walking while chanting Amitabha s name stop in front of the name plate of the deceased 南无清凉地菩萨摩诃萨三唱 Na Mo Ching Liang Di Pu Sa Mo He Sa Thrice Sing Na Mo Ching Liang Di Pu Sa Mo He Sa Thrice Let us take refuge in the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas in the Pure Cool Land 南无般若会上佛菩萨三称 Na Mo Bo Ro Hui Shang Fo Pu Sa Thrice Sing Na Mo Bo Ro Hui Shang Fo Pu Sa Thrice Let us take refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the Prajna Assembly 般若波罗蜜多心经 Sing Heart Sutra Hai Huei 弥陀如来 Mi Tuo Ru Lai 观音势至坐莲台 Guan Yin Shih Zhih Zuo Lien Tai 接引上金阶 Jie Yin Shang Jin Jieh 大誓弘开 Da Shih Hung Kai 普愿离尘埃 Pu Yuan Li Chen Ai Sing Praise of the Lotus Pond At the Ocean Wide Lotus Pool Assembly Amitabha the Tathagata Avalokitesvara Mahasthamaprapta are sitting on their lotus thrones greeting and elevating us to the nine grades of golden lotus seats It is their mighty vow to deliver all beings to the other shore 回向偈 愿生西方净土中 Yuan Sheng Xi Fang Jing Tu Zhong 九品莲华为父母 Jiu Pin Lien Hua Wei Fu Mu 花开见佛悟无生 Hua Kai Jien Fo Wu Wu Sheng 不退菩萨为伴侣 Bu Tui Tu Sa Wei Ban Lu Sing Verse of Transferring Merit I vow to be reborn in the Western Pure Land I vow to have as my parents the lotus flowers of nine grades When the flower opens I will see Amitabah Buddha and will realize that dharmas never arise And I will have as my companions the Bodhisattvas who never regress 回向已师说文 法王利物 悲智洪深 普遍十方 冥阳靡隔 今蒙斋主佛教七宝讲堂恭为某恭为某届逢某之 期 特请山僧登座 依凭教法 作三时系念佛 事 乃尔神灵 遭此胜缘 自宜严肃威仪 来 临座下 恭聆妙法 一心受度 After the conclusion of the merit sharing The Dharma Master recites the following The King of Dharma Tathagata Buddha of Self Nature benefits all beings in the ten directions with His vast and deep compassion and wisdom The world of the deceased is never separated from the world of the living At the offering host s request I am humbled to preside over the Three Times Observance dharma service at the seven gem dharma teaching hall in accordance with Buddha s teachings The purpose of this dharma service is to help reduce disasters and bring peace to the world and to cross over all gods and spirits to the other shore On this auspicious occasion you all gods and spirits should be mindful of your composure be humble in your demeanor gather in the hall listen carefully to the wonderful dharma be single minded and be ready to be helped cross over to the other shore 说文已大众念佛回坛上座对面立举赞云 The crowd chant Amitabha s name till the Dharma Master returns to his seat All sing the song of praise 炉香赞 Sing Praise of Incense Offering As the incense heats up in the censer 6 炉香乍爇 法界蒙熏 Lu Xiang Za Re Fa Jie Meng Xun 诸佛海会悉遥闻 随处结祥云 Zhu Fo Hai Huei Xi Yao Wen Sui Chu Jieh Xiang Xun 诚意方殷 诸佛现全身 Cheng Yi Fang Yin Zhu Fo Xian Quan Shen 南无云来集菩萨摩诃萨 3 times Na Mo Yun Lai Ji Pu Sa Mo He Sa Thrice The fragrance permeates all dharma realms All Buddhas in numerous Buddha lands are aware Auspicious clouds gather everywhere In response to our sincerity and solemnity all Buddhas manifest their bodies completely Sing Na Mo Yun Lai Chi Pu Sa Mo Ho Sa Thrice Let us take refuge in the Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas Gathered Together Like Clouds 唱毕师拈香直白 此一瓣香 根蟠 p n 劫外 枝播尘寰 不经 天地以生成 岂属阴阳而造化 爇向炉中 专 伸供养 常住三宝 刹海万灵 极乐导师 阿 弥陀佛 观音势至 清净海众 悉仗真香 普 同供养 The Dharma Master picks up a piece of incense and recites Our True Nature or True Mind represented by this incense is not confined by time or space produced by heaven or earth or made or transformed by Yin and Yang I put the incense in the censer to offer it our True Mind to the Triple Gems all beings in all worlds Amitabha Buddha our guide to the World of Ultimate Bliss Avalokitesvara Mahasthamaprapta and innumerable Pure Tranquil Bodhisattvas This incense therefore represents a universal offering 南无香云盖菩萨摩诃萨 三称 No Mo Xiang Yun Gai Pu Sa Mo He Sa Thrice 毕众齐坐下押引罄鸣鱼者举 Sing Na Mo Hsiang Yun Gai Pu Sa Mo Ho Sa Three Times Let us take refuge in the Lien Chih Hai Huei Fo Pu Sa Three Times Let us take refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas at the ocean wide lotus pool assembly 唱已师鸣尺白 世界何缘称极乐 只因众苦不能侵 道人若要寻归路 但向尘中了自心 Dharma Master raps the plank and recites the following Why is Amitabha s land called Ultimate Bliss The sentient beings of His world do not endure any of the sufferings Any cultivator who seeks the road home should try to uncover his True Mind by cultivating in this mundane world 心心即佛 醍醐酥酪 咸自乳生 佛佛惟心 钗钏瓶盘 尽从金出 十万亿程 东西不隔 二六时内 凡圣同途 低头合掌白玉毫 星明日丽 歌咏赞扬紫金容 霆震雷轰 清凉月兮有水皆含 功德云而无山不戴 香象渡河 一举洪名超二死 迦陵出穀 qu 千称嘉号压群音 下情唯忖以难思 一念回光而易往 究竟不居心外 分明只在目前 审如是 即今众等 系念弥陀 三时佛事 只 如不涉证修 亲蒙授记一句 如何举扬 The Dharma Master continues Both the True Mind and the delusional mind arise from the Buddha nature just as both cream and cheese are made from milk All Buddhas are the True Mind just as hair decorations bracelets vases and plates are all made of gold There is no distance to travel when passing through hundreds of thousands of millions of Buddha lands The unenlightened and the enlightened are never apart for one moment Putting palms together we bow to the white jade curls In our single mindedness the Sun shines and the stars glow We sing and praise Buddha s purplish golden appearance Our voice of praise is as loud as thunder Just as the tranquil cool Moon reflects in every pool of water as the merit clouds covers every mountain top the Dharma Nature Buddha Nature True Mind and its inherent infinite merits are contained in and manifested through every being Our determination to become a Buddha is as unwavering as the fragrant elephant that stops the current while crossing a river By chanting Amitabha s name we transcend two kinds of birth and death segmented birth and death and transformational birth and death The voice of chanting Amitabha s name is as wondrous and superior as that of an Alavinkas bird that has just hatched It is hard for us unenlightened beings to fathom the wonderfulness of the Pure Land dharma door yet it is very easy for us to gain re birth in the Pure Land if we can simply put our faith in it It does not exist outside our mind It is right in front of our eyes With this understanding we single mindedly chant Amitabha s name during this Three Times Observance dharma service However we are not trying to realize Bodhi or cultivate enlightenment Now how do we comprehend receiving Buddha s prediction of Buddhahood 8 鸣尺一下又白 风吟树树千般乐 香浸池池四色华 Dharma Master raps the plank and continues Touched by a breeze every tree performs all kinds of beautiful music Immersed in fragrance every pond presents lotus flowers of four colors 鸣鱼人举赞云 Sing Verse in Praise of Amitabha Buddha 阿弥陀佛身金色 A Mi Tuo Fo Shen Jin Se 相好光明无等伦 Xiang Hao Guang Ming Wu Deng Lun 白毫宛转五须弥 Bai Hao Wan Zhuan Wu Xu Mi 绀目澄清四大海 Gan Mu Cheng Qing Si Da Hai 光中化佛无数亿 Guang Zhong Hua Fo Wu Shu Yi 化菩萨众亦无边 Hua Pu Sa Zhong Yi Wu Bian 四十八愿度众生 Si Shi Ba Yuan Du Zhong Sheng 九品咸令登彼岸 Jiu Pin Xian Ling Deng Bi An 南无西方极乐世界大慈大悲阿弥陀佛 念佛百声 Na Mo Xi Fang Ji Le Shi Jie Da Ci Da Bei A Mi Tuo Fo Sing Verse in Praise of Amitabha Buddha Amitabha Buddha of golden hue body has incomparable radiant hallmarks His winding luminous white curls are as big as the five Sumeru Mountains His ocean wide Eyes are unsullied and lucid His Transformations of blazing resplendence are the innumerable Bodhisattvas and Immeasurable Buddhas His Forty Eight Vows of crossing nine fold lotus grades to the other shore is our emancipation Let s take refuge in the Greatly Kind and Compassionate Amitabha Buddha of the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss Namo Amitabha Buddha chant 100 times 鸣鱼者举赞云 第一大愿 观想弥陀 Di Yi Da Yuan Guan Xiang Mi Tuo 四十八愿度娑婆 九品涌金波 Si Shi Ba Yuan Du So Po Jiu Pin Yong Jin Bo 宝网交罗 度亡灵出爱河 Bao Wang Jiao Luo Du Wang Ling Chu Ai Heh 南无莲池会菩萨摩诃萨 三称 Na Mo Lien Chih Hai Hui Pu Sa Mo Heh Sa Thrice Our first vow is to be re born in Pure Land Amitabha Buddha s forty eight vows are the boat that crosses us over to the other shore Lotus flowers of nine grades emerge from the golden waves Precious nets deliver the deceased out of the river of love Na Mo Lien Chih Hai Huei Fo PuSa Three Times Let us take refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas at the vast assembly
