谢谢大家 王林海 教授 燕山大学外国语学院 院长 首届认知语言学与文学国际研讨会组委会主席 1 Welcoming Remarks Honorable scholars ladies and gentlemen It is indeed a pleasure and privilege that the School of Foreign Languages of Yanshan University under the leadership of Foreign Languages Teaching and Research Association of Hebei Universities and Colleges have the opportunity to co host this International symposium on Cognitive Linguistics and Literatures in Qinhuangdao On behalf of the School of Foreign Languages of Yanshan University I am honoured and privileged to deliver the opening remarks First of all I would like to extend our warm welcome to our guests and scholars for their attendance especially to Prof Mondry and Dr Taylor who have taken the long trip to come here from New Zealand I would also like to thank the related administrative offices of Yanshan University and Liren College of Yanshan University for their assistance without which this conference would not have been possible There may have been a time when linguists and literary scholars were both working side by side studying a national language and its literature The advent of Cognitive Linguistics from 1980s is potentially much more useful to text centred literary scholarship and continue to have an influence on literary study The closest exchange between literature and cognitive linguistics that has occurred in interdisciplinary studies is literary cognitive studies The conference we are organising tries to initiate such dialogue by getting both camps to meet and talk to each other in the hope that they will re discover their common interests and objectives if any and begin to sketch if possible a horizon of fruitful interdisciplinary cross fertilization cooperative projects research transfer and emergent structures of transdisciplinarity in both areas The theme of this Symposium is designed to attract the research communities to promote connections between theory and practice and explore different perspectives on the application of research findings into practice With inclusive support and recognition from all attendees this conference will take effort in keeping its quality and hence making contribution to the field of language and literature Let us seize the opportunity to review the past examine the present and look into the future which I think is highly important and meaningful Finally I would like to wish the conference every success and thank every one of you again for your attendance Thank you very much Professor Linhai Wang Dean of School of Foreign Languages Yanshan University Chair of the to the ways in which an utterance is filtered through the mind of the speaker It contrasts with objectivity the situation in which semantic structure bears no trace of its speaker and where sentences can be fully understood in terms of objectively verifiable states of affairs in the world Probably no utterance is fully objective in this sense Subjectivity takes many forms and permeates just about all aspects of linguistic semantic structure I address several manifestations of subjectivity including reference and modality focusing especially on the semantic domain of causality and the linguistic means whereby causal relations can be expressed 9 Frequency effects in language John R Taylor University of Otago Abstract Things in a language occur with different frequencies This is true of words word classes word groups constructions declensions conjugations inflected forms phonemes syllable types etc etc In fact wherever we look in a language we find skewed frequencies There is also compelling evidence that speakers of a language know if only implicitly these relative frequencies In this lecture I argue that frequency distributions are more than just an incidental property of language as used they are a design feature of language without them a language would be both unlearnable and unusable Evidence for this claim comes from research in acquisition categorization and language processing and recent investigations into small world networks Dr Henrietta Mondry Professor is a distinguished scholar of Russian literature and culture She is Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and Fellow in the Academy of Humanities of New Zealand She obtained a PhD degree from the University of the Witwatersrand Johannesburg in 1984 Professor Mondry is coordinator of the populist writers in order to promote anti Semitism in the two volume history written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn and was described as profound by reviewers Her ground breaking book Pure Strong and Sexless the Russian Women s Body and Gleb Uspensky 2006 addressed body politics and gender in the work of populist writers Her book Exemplary Bodies Constructing the Jew in Russian Culture since the 1880 2009 is described by Sander L Gilman the former President of Modern Languages Association MLA as one of the most important books in the last decade in the burgeoning field of Russian Jewish
