telecommute chose to do so according to a study on Wednesday which said many still elect to work at the office All those people working from home could translate into annual gasoline savings of 3 9 billion according to the National Technology Readiness Survey But the study also found that about 14 percent of the workforce has the option to telecommute but chooses not to As the study s principal researcher Professor P K Kannan put it That seems to suggest that even if employers were to say tomorrow that everybody had the option of telecommuting and that it would save a lot of gas that s not going to happen What s going on Some of it is obvious people like to go to the office for social reasons even if their work tasks don t require it And that s not just to be around other people Our social needs also include being seen and making right impressions on bosses and colleagues Our own research at Work Design Collaborative is completely consistent with that interpretation So how are we actually going to realize the energy saving opportunities that we re missing It seems to me there are two very basic actions called for First organizations must make distributed work not only available but expected by more employeespany policies and financial incentives can easily push workers into changing their patterns Note that I am not advocating making everyone a full time telecommuter But just getting half of the workforce to work from home or in a nearby facility two days a week would save 20 of the gasoline now being consumed by moving people from homes to offices Second we also need some national public policy initiatives to encourage people to work from home It s time to realize just how critical telecommuting and distributed work are to our national security on several levels It s about reducing our dependence on foreign sources of energy It s about business continuity in the face of natural disasters Katrina etc and or acts of terrorism And perhaps most importantly of all it s about reducing greenhouse gases as we address the global climate crisis I wrote about yesterday in An Inconvenient Truth 16 What can we learn from the first paragraph A One quarter of the US workforce is now doing their jobs at home B The people who prefer to work from home can not afford to telecommute C Although they can telecommute Americans still prefer to work at office D More and more people who can telecommute prefer to work from home 17 According to the study people don t choose to work from home because A the working culture now is still not favorable B people want to meet their social needs C people are afraid of falling behind their colleagues D people can t work well without teamwork 18 According to the passage the main benefit for people to work from home is that A there would be less traffic jams B working efficiency could be greatly increased C the energy saving opportunities could be realized D the relation between bosses and workers could be greatly improved 19 What s the author s attitude towards working from home A He thinks it is too early to put it into practice B He thinks it is ideal and not practical enough C He thinks it is the company s fault for its delay D He is completely in favor of it 20 The underlined word incentives in the passage has a similar meaning to A encouragements B pressures C crisis D services 任务型读写 任务型读写 I the other ones will Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary If you make a promise to yourself to finish before a specific time make sure that you carry that out and be sure to do everything within the time frame you set for yourself Don t try to deal with more things all at a time All that does is to delay your progress distract you and make you lose your interest motivation and energy Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time Last but not the least you should never give up things mid project It will only annoy everyone around you including yourself So don t be afraid of organization The older we get the more necessary it becomes to have the skills necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way It pays to be
