Or were you middle or an only child? Some people think it matters where you were born in your family. But there are different ideas about what birth order means. Some people say that oldest children are smart and strong-willed. They are very likely to be successful. The reason for this is simple: parents have a lot of time for their first child, they give him or her a lot of attention. So this child is very likely to do well. An only child will succeed for the same reason. What happens to the other children in the family? Middle children dont get so much attention, so they dont feel that important. If a family has many children, the middle one sometimes gets lost in the crowd. The youngest child, though, often gets special treatment. He or she is the baby. Often this child grows up to be funny and charming. Do you believe this idea of birth order too? A recent study saw things quite differently. The study found that first children believed in family rules. They didnt take many chances in their lives. They usually followed orders. Rules didnt mean as much to later children in the family. They went out and followed their own ideas. They took chances and they often did better in life.Q1. According to common belief, in what way are the first child and the only child alike?Q2. What do people usually say about middle children?Q3. What do we learn about later children in a family from a recent study of birth order?Passage 2“Go to play ground and have fun,” parents will often say this to their kids. But they should remember playgrounds can be dangerous. Each year about 200,000 children end up in hospital emergency rooms with many injuries. Many injuries involve falls from too high equipment onto too hard surfaces. Nearly 70% of the injuries happen on public playgrounds. Recent studies show they may be badly designed, their protective surfaces are inadequate, and their equipment is poorly maintained. Parents should make sure that the equipment in the playground is safe and that the children are playing safely. Last year, the national program for playground safety gave the nations playgrounds a grade C for safety after visiting more than 3000 playgrounds nationwide. Parents should watch closely. They should always be within shouting and running distance of their children. Young children dont understand cause and effect, so they may run in front of moving swings. They are also better at climbinging up than getting down, so they may panic at the top of the ladder. It important for children to know youre watching them. Once they feel that sense of security, thats when they can be creative.Q4. Whats the cause of playground injuries?Q5 what should parents do to prevent playground injuries?Q6 what does the speaker say about the young children?Passage 3The first step to stop drug abuse is knowing why people start to use drugs. The reasons people abuse drugs are as different as people are from one to another. but there seems to be one common thread: people seem to take drugs to changes the way they feel. They want to feel better or feel happy or to feel nothing. Sometimes, they want to forget or to remember. People often feel better about themselves when they are under the influence of drugs. But the effects dont last long. Drugs dont solve problems. They just postpone them. No matter how far drug s may take you, its always around trip. After a while, people who miss drugs ma y feel worse about themselves, and they they may use more drugs. If someone you know is using or abusing drugs, you can help. The most important part you can pl ay is to be there. You can let your friends know that you care. You can listen a nd try to solve the problem behind your friends need to use drugs. Two people together can often solve a problem that seems too big for one person alone. Studies of heavy abusers in the United States show that they felt unloved and unwanted. They didnt have close friends to talk to. When you or your friends take the time to care for each other, youre all helping to stop drugs abuse. After all, what is a friend for?. Q7.Why do some people abuse drugs?Q8. According to the passage, what is the best way to stop friends from abusing drugs?Q9. What are the findings of the studies about heavy drug users?Passage 4 Researchers have discovered a link between drinking and thinking. A moderate amount of alcohol may help us keep our mental abilities as we age. Brain scans show alcohol abuse kills brain cells. But little is known about the effects of life-long drinking. So moderate drinkers may want to toast new findings from researchers at Duke, and Indiana Universities. Dr. Joe Christian of Indiana Universities says men who have one or two drinks each day retain slightly stronger comprehension skills than the non-drinker or the heavy drinker. The doctor and his colleagues gave mental tests to nearly 4000 male twins between the ages of 66 and 76. The moderate drinkers had slightly better reasoning ability than their brothers who drink more or less. Other studies have found that alcohol in moderation can help the heart. But alcohol abuse can cause bone loss and other health problems. This study was presented at an alcoholism meeting in San Antonio.Q10. What has recent research found about drinking?Q11. How would moderate drinkers feel about the new research findings?Q12. Where was the result of the study first made public?Passage 5After retiring from 30 years of teaching, Ethbell Pepper could easily have decidedto sit back and relax and enjoy a peaceful retirement. But that kind of life is not for Ethbell Pepper. “I just wanted to do something different. If you are goingto participant in life, do it. Dont just sit down and look out the window.” she says. At 68,she decided to become one of the pioneer participation in a program at the university of California. The program offers campus housing and classes to people over sixty. She enrolled in a class called Human Relationships and a Diverse Society.” I taught my minority students in my English and drama classes in high school for 20 years. But in this course, I found out a lot about other culturesthat I didnt know them. One of the more important lessons that Im learning is to perceive, not to judge.” Older adults can add to the educational resources of university by bringing with them a lot of valuable experience. Their presence on campus helps break some long believes on aging. Young students may have fears of growing older. But that kind of fear can be reduced as they see that older peoplecan be active, healthy, and continue to contribute to society. The younger students can begin to see aging as a natural part of living.13. What did Ethbell do when she was 68? 14. How long did Ethbell teach minority students? 15. What do elderly people do to the university? 16. Whats the most important lesson Ethbell is learning? Passage 6Susan Anthony was born in Massachusetts in 1820 and died in Rochester, N.Y., in 1906. In the 1850s, she saw many problems in her country and wanted to do something about them. One of these problems was that women did not have the right to vote in the United States. Susan Anthony and many others felt that women and men should have equal rights. In 1869 she helped start the National Womens Association. This group worked hard to get women the right to vote in the United States. In 1869, the state of Wyoming gave women the right to vote. Some other states also allowed women to vote. But Susan Anthony and the National American Womens Association wanted all women to have the right to vote. They worked to add this to the Constitution of the United States. Finally, in 1920, fourteen years after Susan Anthonys death, an article was added to the Constitution. It gave all American women the right to vote.Q17.
