Metaphor: a word that ordinarily means one thing is used to mean another, thus making an implicit comparison. Metaphor is based on likeness or similarity in such aspects as shape or function. For example, metaphor is used in the phrase “a forest of chimneys”, since the chimney stalks are like trees in the forest. Another example goes like “the fruit of ones research”. Here the result of a persons research is like the fruit in the function that both can bring people certain kind of physical or mental enjoyment. 2. Specialization: It is one of the four major processes of semantic change, in which the meaning of a word narrows so that it refers to fewer objects or ideas. For example, liquor in Old English means any kind of liquid, but with the time going on its meaning narrows down to mean a kind of distilled alcoholic drink. 3. Antonymy: It is a kind of sense relation in which words are opposite or incompatible in meaning.
