Analysis of Romeo and Juliet2010010164 英语专升本1004班 朱玲玲Romeo and Juliet is the most famous play created by William Shakespeare in 1595. It is also the most famous tragedy love story which describes a handsome man and a beauty. Because of their deep family hatred, the two lovers died. Humanism is embodied completely in this play. Scenery description and comparison are used perfectly.Romeo and Juliet lived in two very different families that hating each other for many years. However, they fell in love without considering their families. As for the family hatred, the two couldnt tell others about their love. With the help of a priest, they got married secretly. Things didnt get well. Romeo killed a person whom from Juliets family by accident and was expelled from the family. Meanwhile Juliet was arranged by her family to marry another man. Under the desperate conditions, Juliet drunk the poisonous wine and pretended to be a dead woman. When Romeo knew this, he became heartbroken and killed himself later. After Juliet woke up, she knew Romeo died because of her, she ended her life with a knife. The two families became friends after the death of the two lovebirds.This play regards Romeo and Juliet as helpless victims of the arbitrary operation of fate. The progressive anti-feudalism is also perfectly represented. Their tragedy denounces the crime of feudalism ethnics, criticizing old-fashioned and decayed the feudal awareness, representing the struggle between English feudal society and anti-feudal society. Humanism originated from the Europe in Renaissance. It objects any old ideas about God. It was a literary and philosophic system of thought which attempted to place the affairs of mankind at the centre of its concerns. It took as a major interest the life of man in the present and attempted to lay the foundation for a life of justice and goodness on earth. It also was an attitude taking the exploration of human potential for a full and rewarding life. Humanism in Romeo and Juliet advocates equal freedom, personality emancipation and independent marriage. In the play Romeo and Juliet got married without thinking of their families. Their love reflects the core of humanism. Their love broke the deep feudalism. Their love compliments love is the most honored emotion in human beings. The two families became friends in the end. The death of Romeo and Juliet brought reconciliation to the two opposing families and the tragedy of Romeo and Juliet indeed moved the audience a great deal: “For never was a story of more woe, than this of Juliet and her Romeo.” Why was this tragedy the most woeful? Because it told a story of mans futile fight against fate, which reminded the audience of their own struggle in life; because it proved to us that humanity was nothing but fortunes fool, controlled by the almighty stars, acting on the mere stage of the world; because it shed light upon us that although we may not succeed in our pursuing and fighting, at length we will achieve something, something meaningful, something hopeful. Romeo is an enthusiastic, good-educated, tender and handsome young man, but he became rude and uncivilized when he faced the dangerous situation. He lose his sense. He had to kill Tybalt who has bad temper. However, Romeo showed his sympathy to his competitor and fighter. He died for the pure love. He is a brave but not mature young man. His character represents the humanism.Juliet is a beautiful, pure, tender, warm, kind, good-educated young lady. She determined to stay with Romeo regardless of her family. In order to get the happy marriage, she require the priest to help her and drunk the poisonous wine. She hoped her good plan will rescue their love. Unfortunately, Romeo died when he saw her. She is brave enough to do these things. The play describes persons by means of dialogue. The language reflects their mind, their character, their attitude toward the society. There is a lot of old English were used. Metaphor is also applied. For example, “Juliet is the sun”. Because the sun is warm that make people feel comfortable. It states vividly that Juliet is a very kind, tender lady. In a conclusion, Romeo and Juliet vividly embodied humanism in that period of time. It represents that people want
