This year we commemorate a significant event in the history of the relationship between Indonesia and China. Indonesia was one of the first countries to recognize China and it was 60 years ago that diplomatic relations were officially established between our two countries.The bilateral relations between Indonesia and China reached a new high in 2005. Since then, we have been witnessing the enhancement of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation in all fields, including economic cooperation. This year, the bilateral trade volume amounted to US$28.6 billion, and we have set the target for trade with China to reach US$50 billion in 2014. In addition, the Government of Indonesia has also determined that to achieve sustainable development, cooperation should be focused on the improvement of infrastructure, as well as technology transfer for food and energy security.Our cooperation targets should not be limited only to reaching higher trade volume, but also promoting mutual understanding between the people of our two countries.In Indonesia, Chinese have been an important ethnic group since the pre-independence period of the country, and even long before that. There have been considerable and revolutionary changes in the governments policies toward Chinese. This is now an era of rediscovery. Many Mandarin learning centers have opened throughout the country. Dragon and lion dances are held in public in many places. And Chinese culture is beginning to be embraced by the popular media. Indonesia International Friendly Contact will complement the existing social ties which serve as the avenues for closer engagement, exchange of culture and ideas, and stronger cooperation amongst nations.It is our fervent hope that Indonesia International Friendly Contact and its counterpartChina Association for International Friendly Contactwill pave the way for a very busy avenue of friendship in the years to come.Thank you!
