Supposing this information could tell you what illnesses you were likely to get, or even what illness you might die of, would you open the envelope? Its a difficult question to answer. But the fact is that scientists have already begun to discover how certain genes influence us. And in the next decade, they will learn a lot more. We have known for a long time that many of our physical characteristics are inherited. For example, our eye colour and certain diseases are decided by our genes. As long as you have a good diet, scientists can predict your height by looking at your parents heights. And we now know that the need to wear glasses has a genetic cause. Our eating habits also appear to be decided by our genes! With other characteristics, things are not so clear. Certainly, scientists have now shown that some traits are strongly influenced by our genes. Do you prefer getting up early or late? To a great extent, its your genes that decide, Do you enjoy dangerous sports such as car racing? There is a gene that influences how much excitement we need. But with most psychological characteristics, scientists are learning that both our genes and our environment affect us. This is true of things such as how violent we are, and how well we get on with other people. So, even though scientists may soon be able to describe our genes in detail, it does not mean they will be able to predict our future with any real success. Nonetheless, the fact is that scientists will be able to read our genes in the near future. This will create new problems. To give a few examples, insurance companies may not want to insure people whose genes predict certain illnesses. Employers may not want to employ people who have a gene for violence. One thing is already clear - with these new developments, life is going to become even more complicated! 39. Which characteristics is mostly likely to be inherited? A. Eye color. B. Interest. C. Future. D. Ability. 40. What kind of problem will these new developments create? A. You may die of a certain illness described in the envelope. B. There will be an increased number of violent people. C. People may take part in dangerous sports such as car racing. D. Insurance companies may refuse to insure people with a gene for certain disease. 41. Why wont scientists be able to tell us a lot about our future? A. Because were affected not only by our genes but also by our environment. B. Because scientists will not able to read our genes in the near future. C. Because life in the future will be more complicated. D. Because scientists cant describe our genes in detail.CThe Diet Zone: A Dangerous PlaceDiet Coke, diet Pepsi, diet pills, no-fat diet, vegetable diet . We are surrounded by the word“diet” everywhere we look and listen. We have so easily been attracted by the promise and potential of diet products that we have stopped thinking about what diet products are doing to us. We are paying for products that harm us psychologically and physically(身体上). Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level, we are not allowing our brains to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty, high-calorie, unhealthy foods. Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale (秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels. On another level, diet products have greater psychological effects. Every time we have a zero-calorie drink, we are telling ourselves without our awareness that we dont have to work to get results. Diet products make people believe that gain comes without pain, and that life can be without resistance and struggle. The danger of diet products lies not only in the psychological effects they have on us, but also in the physical harm that they cause. Diet foods can indirectly harm our bodies because consuming them instead of healthy foods means we are preventing our bodies from having basic nutrients (营养成分). Diet foods and diet pills contain zero calorie only because the diet industry has created chemicals to produce these wonder products. Diet products may not be nutritional, and the chemicals that go into diet products are potentially dangerous. Now that we are aware of the effects that diet products have on us, it is time to seriously think about buying them. Losing weight lies in the power of minds, not in the power of chemicals. Once we realize this, we will be much better able to resist diet products, and therefore prevent the psychological and physical harm that comes from using them. 42. From Paragraph 1, we learn that _. A. diet products fail to bring out peoples potential B. people have difficulty in choosing diet products C. diet products are misleading people D. people are fed up with diet products 43. One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to _. A. try out a variety of diet foods B. hesitate before they enjoy diet foods C. pay attention to their own eating habits D. watch their weight rather than their diet 44. In Paragraph 3, “gain comes without pain” probably means _. A. losing weight is effortless B. it costs a lot to lose weight C. diet products bring no pain D. diet products are free from calories 45. Diet products indirectly harm people physically because such products _. A. are over-consumed B. lack basic nutrients C. are short of chemicals D. provide too much energyD Songs that make our hearts happy can make them stronger too, US researchers reported on Tuesday. They found that when people listened to their favorite music, their blood vessels(血管)dilated in much the same way as when they are laughing, or taking blood medications. We have a pretty impressive effect, said Dr Michael Miller, director of preventive cardiology(心脏病学)at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Blood vessel diameter improved, he said. The vessel opened up pretty significantly. You can see the vessels opening up with other activities such as exercise. A similar effect is seen with drugs such as statins. When blood vessels open up more, blood flows more smoothly and is less likely to form the clots(凝块)that cause heart attacks and strokes. We are not saying to stop your statins or not to exercise but rather to add this to an overall program of heart health, said Miller, who presented his findings to a meeting of the American Heart Association in New Orleans. Millers team tested 10 healthy, non-smoking men and women, who were told to bring their favorite music. They spent half an hour listening to the recordings and half an hour listening to music they said made them feel anxious while the researchers did ultrasound tests designed to show blood vessel function.Compared to their normal baseline measurements, blood vessel diameter increased 26 percent on average when the volunteers heard their joyful music. Listening to music they dislikedin most cases in this group heavy metalblood vessels narrowed by six percent, Miller said. Miller said he came up with the idea after discovering that laughter caused blood to literally flow more smoothly. I asked myself what other things make us feel real good, besides calories from dark chocolate of course. Music came to mind. . . . It makes me feel really good, he said. Most of the volunteers chose country music but Miller said the style is not so important rather than what pleases each individual. 46. The underlined word dilate(in paragraph 2)is closest in meaning to “_”. A. widen B. move C. change D. Increase 47. According to the passage, which of the following will NOT cause blood vessels to open up? A. Taking exercise. B. Listening to unpleasant music. C. Burstng into laughter. D. Taking drugs like statins. 48. It can be inferred from the passage that _. A. blood clots are caused by heart attacks and strokes B. music is better than chocolate for your health C. the style of music has different effects on different people D. a persons overall health is more influenced by how much exercise he gets 49. What is the passage possibly taken out from? A. A scientific journal. B. A school textbook. C. A medical brochure. D. A local newspaper. 50. Whats the best title of the passage? A. Pleasant Music Cures B. Research into Blood Vessel C. Music and Heart Attack D.
