The famous sentence that “It is a truth universally, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife” is the mirror of the society at that time.The author，Jane Austen，she always use an irony way to let us know the meaning of “family” ”love” and ” marriage”. Jane Austen was born in Hampshire, a country priest family located in Hants, the village of Kingston, Sidemen in north England. She was a beautiful, talented middle class woman with extraordinary temperament and good cultivation. She was primarily educated at home, benefiting from her fathers extensive library and the schoolroom atmosphere created by Mr. Austens live in pupils. Her closest friend was her only sister, Cassandra, almost three years her senior.Austens short life is almost spended in the country of UK, perhaps because of the simple environment, the halcyon atmosphere, she had temperament. There was no reason to doubt her for things analytical because she has less experiences .Reading the book pride and prejudice people will be more admired for her exquisite, keen emotion tracks.In fact, the Pride and prejudice is quite narrow in the materials. As charlotte Bronte once said: I dont want to be in their elegant and narrow house with her who stay with the ladies and gentlemen. In my opinion, Austin is more like a little woman in her novel, short of a sense of atmosphere. But I like this kind of little womens Literature . We can say her eyesight is narrow, also we can say her lack of depth , but you can not resist her charm . This kind of little womens literature is not only the authors characteristic, but also the novels original place : meticulous 、careful and conscientious .This is why I like little womens literature characteristics. At the beginning of the first chapter in the novel is Mrs. Bennett blanket type saying Rich bachelors always want to marry a wife, this is a recognized truth. Make readers know which the kind of people Mrs. Bennett is.The readers criticized Mrs. Bennett, laughed at her pedantry and ignorance. But it is the role who explained the most popular marriage values in the society at that time .It was the popular marriage value at that time that marry the Bennett daughters as her life event . Readers understand the whole social background when they sneering at Mrs. Bennett. In fact, the distance between readers and Mrs. Bennett make it much closer between the readers and the author, thus closing the distance of readers and the heroine. She has vividly described fourdifferent kinds of love andmarriagesbyskillfullyusingironyandherwittyandhumorouslanguage.Moreover,forthefirsttimethroughoutthehistoryof English literature,JaneAustenhascompletelyresearchedanddiscussedabouttheissueofwomenscircumstanceandsocialstatus.Shesharedanaopinionthatwomenshouldfightfortheirindependentdignityandequalrights.Itrepresentsanadvancedthinkingoffeminineconsciousness. In the 19th century, women were not well respected compared with the ones in the present society. There was no equality between woman and man. Women were considered to be inferior to men in terms of intelligence and capacity. The central life of women was forced to be staying at home, their roles were to deal with the family affairs, such as taking care of the children and serving for the husband .But the roles under the pen of Jane Austen are not all like that .The girls has different lives and different opinions about their lives. They all smart and beautiful, they love people and they are loved by people. Though there was no status for women,they fight for their marriages and they finaly find a husband suited or not for themselves.1. Collins and Charlottes MarriageIn the novel pride and prejudice, the first part is the marriage of Charlotte and Collins, their marriage is natural. They get married without any expectation. Charlotte is William Lucass daughter, who is the neighbor of Lizzy Bennett. She was born of humble parentage and very mediocre in every aspect. So she did not get married even until she is 26 years old. She may be a typical questionable girl at that time . However, there are five daughters in the Bennetts, the five daughters are gradually growing up to the age for marriage. So both of the two families fight and also help each other, especially in the eyes of the vulgar women, the rivalry was particularly tedious. Mrs. Bennett was an especially typical. She did not give birth to a boy but five girls. The familys property couldnt be given to a daughter according to the custom at that time, and the family without a son can grant the wealth to the nephew. Thus, one of Bennett nephewCollins can have the familys wealth. Therefore, Mrs. Bennett has great expectations on her nephew. As the Collins is the final owner of Bonnet familys wealth, Mrs. Bennett was hoped that he can married with one of her daughter. With this, Mrs. Bennett felt at ease, and then she has great hope on Collins and likes him. Catherine Collins, with the help of one of his relatives, becomes a priest. And then he goes to the home of his uncle, wanting to be home complement of Bennett. Because he has heard a lot about the arrangement of the five beautiful girls in his uncles family, he is coming to try his luck here. In his mind, if he could be one son-in-low of his uncles, then he could get the property of the family. Known that the eldest daughter Jane has a boyfriend, he aims at the second daughter Elizabeth Bennett in spite for his aunts interesting sake, but Elizabeth has been tired of him. Eventually, she refuses him. But Collins quickly finds comfort from Charlotte who desires to get love from a male and believes that marriage is the elegant way for a girl with some education, and then they get married as quickly as the lightning. A mediocre love, a dull marriage has been established effortlessly. Such marriage without love is too practical, so it is a kind of superficial marriage without happiness.In chapter 22 of the novel, we can see from the sad irony words which the author said to the charlottes marriage, young women who live in a poor family but received quite education always put the marriage as only way to go. Although get married will not made people happy, but it finally give yourself a believable storage room to stay, and do not need to suffer from cold and hunger in the future. In the patriarchal society, women have been in a subsidiary position, marriage is a matched combination between two families, love is in a place of nice to have.2. Lydia and Wickhams MarriageThe second marriage is between Bennetts third daughter Lydia and Wickham, the son of the housekeeper. Originally he is well-treated by the family and the friends. However, he comes down in the world because of his misbehavior. He gets into debt. So, he wants to get money and become rich and change his social status through the marriage. He is a man without any responsibility. In his opinion, love is only a recreation. On his purpose, he entices Lydia and gets her love easily, that is because she is young, innocent and vainglorious, and loves to go ease and hates to work hard, and is spoilt by her mother. Getting love and praise from a boy is her dream. So when Wickham wants to reach his aimgetting wealth by love and exalts her beauty hypocritically , she forgets everything and feels that she is the most beautiful and happiest girl in the world. Their love does not get the permission from the their parents, so they elope. When Elizabeth hears the news, she believes that their love is false, Wickham would not marry Lydia, because she is no charming and has nothing to attract him, He does not love her but the wealth of her family. The marriage is admitted on the condition of Darcys help. Their marriage is considered to be a scandal in Bennetts family. When Collins gets the news, of course, he is very angry and reacts to the marriage to revenge his early failure of proposal to her. This marriage is one without love. They are not the real meaning of marriage, they only want to satisfy their aspiration. So we can say this is a kind of love and marriage is without true love and responsibility. Such couple only seek having had the experience but not everlasting and unchanging. Of course, such kind of marriage is doomed to be a tragedy.3. Jane and Mr. Bingleys MarriageThe third marriage is of the eldest daughter Jane and Mr. Bingley. Bingley is a friend of Darcy. Bingleys sister loves Darcy very much. She wants Bingley to get married with Darcys sister Georgiana, because she wants to get love from Darcy by this way, which can also reflects how selfishness the sister is . The marriage of the able man Bingley and the beautiful girlJane is ideal in most peoples eyes. Of course, the couple meets many setbacks, such as the misunderstanding of Darcy and Bingleys selfish sister. At last, the lovers get married as the misunderstanding between Elizabeth and Darcy has been solved. This maybe the most perfect marriage we had seen , but actually it had across many setbacks. Jane is beautiful , gentle and quiet . She is different with Elizabeth , she seldom says her feelings to others. She has a reserved personality and tends to hide her feelings. She is incapable of suspectingthe worst of people, preferring to see only the good. Its hard for her to get the happiness.4. Darcy and Elizabeths Marriage.The fourth marriage is the main theme of the works. That is Darcy and Elizabeths marriage. At the beginning, Elizabeth rejects the pursuer-Darcy, because she does not like him, even looks down upon him though Darcy loves her very much. In Elizabeths eyes, he is arrogant and unreasonable because he is rich and has high social status. Realizing that, Darcy begins to get rid of those bad habits quietly to fit her taste and get good impression and love of her. Because of Darcys perfect behavior and good education, Elizabeth gradually eliminates the bias on Darcy. Then they spontaneously fall in love. So when Darcys second suitor is sent to Elizabeth, Elizabeth readily agree, and they get married and have a happy family lives at last.Elizabeth cares much about what she looks like in others eyes, she doesnt want other see her as a ignorant and vanity woman. She wants a soul mate rather than a
