Get Ss to discuss whether a doctor should be honest or not to a patient on the patients true disease. 2. About the text, Ss should grasp the text content, text structure, basic vocabularies, useful expressions and required grammar points of the section.3. About the reading, Ss should know the reading strategy of guessing new words. 4. About the listening, Ss finish the Unit 5 directed by teacher.5. About the writing, Ss should get to know the writing skilla good topic sentence. Teaching Approaches Communicative approach and Computer-Assisted Instruction are to be used in the course of this lesson. 1. Student-centered teaching 2. Task-based learning 3. Activity-based teaching (individual work; group work; class work). Teaching Aids: a multi-media computer system . Students level: Sophomores of non-English majors in the 2nd semester. Teaching Procedures Step 1. Title: a parody (10 minutes)1. To be or not to be. Shakespeare (Hamlet) To lie or not to lie.2. The government of the people, by the people, for the people.John Kennedy The government off the people, buy the people, far the people. Step 2. Warming-up & lead-in (20 minutes)1. Teacher asks Ss to discuss the following questions: 1). When do you tell lies? 2). Do you always believe a doctors diagnosis? A doctor has training in treating the diseases and injuries of human beings. But nobody is perfect and doctors can be wrong. 3). Do you think that a doctor has good reasons to tell lies? Only when he does so for the patients own sake. 4). Would you prefer to be told the truth about a serious illness you had? Why? 2. Background information 1) About Medicine 2) About Doctors Three types of doctors: general practitioners; specialists; researchers Other medical workers: physician; surgeon; dentist; . Goal: To lead up to the topic, get Ss to warm up and arouse their interest in the topic. Step 3. Pre-reading: Look and Guess (class work) (10 minutes) In this activity, Ss are required to look at the title/subtitle and guess what they will read. Step 4. While-reading: Activity 1 Skimming (class work) (20 minutes) Ss are required to go through the whole passage quickly to get the general idea.Goal: To develop Ss reading skill - skimming, that is, how can we get the general idea of a passage as quickly as possible.Activity 2 Scanning (group work) (30 minutes)Make Ss divide the text into 3 parts and get the general idea of every part.PartsParagraphMain Idea11-5Doctors reasons for telling lies.26-9The authors reasons why patients should be told the truth.310-11The author urges that an open debate be held on this issue.Divide the class into 2 groups & Discuss 1. The first group: to go over the first part of the text (par.1-5) and find out the reasons why some doctors tell lies to their seriously ill patients. 2. The second group: to go over the second part of the text (par.6-9) looking for the authors reasons why patients should be told the truth. 3. Discuss the following two questions. 1) Doctors reasons for telling lies. Lies may benefit the patients. Lies may help speed recovery. Telling them the truth of their condition, patients may recover more slowly, or deteriorate faster, perhaps even commit suicide. 2) The authors reasons why patients should be told the truth. Studies show that an overwhelming majority of patients do want to be told the truth and that they feel betrayed when they learn that they have been kept in the dark. Dying patients who are lied to be about their condition cant make decisions about the end of life. Lies also do harm to doctors integrity and their credibility. Activity 3 Teacher explains the text in details. (90 minutes)Paragraph 15: Doctors reasons for telling lies.Paragraph 11. Analyze the structure of this sentence. We are becoming increasingly aware of all that can befall patients in the course of their illness when information is denied or distorted. “We are becoming more aware of / that ” is a very common and often-used structure in the argumentative essay writing. For Example: We are becoming more aware of the dangers of excessive smoking. 3. Tolerate v. allow or endure without protest The workers said they couldnt tolerate the poor working condition any longer. Integrity n. honesty, uprightness A man of integrity can be trusted. Alternative n. a choice between two or more things to be chosen. There are three alternative for his treatment and most doctors are for the first one.4.
