英国文学课程论文题目:The Development of Jims Personality - Treasure Island 班 级: 2010级英语02班 学 号: 2010505034 姓 名: 卢 安 微 时 间: 2012年12月25日 The Development of Jims Personality -Treasure IslandAbstract: Treasure Island is one of the most representative novels of Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim, a ten-year-old boy, is the protagonist of this novel. This article is written under the clue of Jims growing to maturity, and in order to find the relationships between Jims characters and his living environments. In the novel, Jim has finally become a courageous, strong and mature man from a timid, innocent and boneless boy. Key words: gentlemen and pirates; models of manliness; qualities of manlinessTreasure Island is one of the most representative novels of Robert Louis Stevenson. Jim, the protagonist of this novel, is a ten-year-old boy. To begin with, the old pirate, Captain Bill, came into Jims life and brought little Jim some influence. After Captain Bills death, Jim found a treasure map from Captain Bills place. Therefore, the story of treasure hunting in Treasure Island was beginning. The pirates, leaded by Silver, pretending to be sailors, also went with them. During the exploration, a lot of hardships and strange things were happened. And the most heart-stopping incident was the pirates insurgent attacks. Afterwards, Jims group defeated the pirates at last, and got the treasure. This is a thrilling adventure story. Hero Jims character formation is of great value to explore. In the growing maturity stage, children need some models surrounding them to imitate or learn from. In the novel, Jims father has died in the early age; therefore, he has got to learn from the people who have appeared around him. Jim is wandering between gentlemen and pirates; he has not only learned gentlemens honest, upright, polite and kind-hearted, but also learned pirates dangerous, violence, indulge and headship. But in the course of study, Jim does not absorb them completely, but does a certain observation and selection, and then in this level imitation and beyond. Finally, Jim forms his own character. For instance, he learned how to be a gentleman from Livesey and then he also learned the merits from pirate Silver. The novel showed that when little Jim picked up the news of the pirates rebellion, he told it to doctor Livesey at the first time. This sign could show that Jim had taken the doctor as his model and he gave his greatest trust to him.The reader also can recognize this phenomenon in other parts of the novel. After Jim got the treasure map, he thought of the doctor firstly. He gave the biggest support to Livesey about the secret of the voyage to explore the treasure; and including the rebellion he had heard in the apple barrel. All of these things could show that he had chosen a right person to follow.Silver was a key person in this novel. After his pirate identity was revealed and showing his ruthless, Jim also could not help his mind to learn Silvers organizing. This plot showed that he had absorbed Silvers ability, and it could do the important influence for Jims characters development.Jims formation of character did conform to the development of the novel plot. Everyone Jim met in this novel has served the help for Jims character shaping. In the end of the novel, people could find that Jim had not only the character of the gentleman, but also the character of the pirates. Because of these two kinds of character, Jim could form this kind of man who is going to control the overall situation. When I finished reading the abbreviated version of this novel, actually I could not understand what Jims personality was and how it was formed. Afterwards, I watched the adaptation movie about this novel, and searched some information about this novel; I recognized the main personality of Jim Hawkins at last. From the psychology, childrens character and cognition of the world is depended on what they experience and received before fifteen years old. At that time, the cognition of the society of us is from their family, school or their friends, of course we could not meet someone who was like the people in the novel; therefore, we could not be a person like Jim Hawkins. So what I learned from Jim is that we should learn from other people who we meet every day and emulate peo
