文档简介
PARAPHRASEUNIT11. For twenty minutes, the terminal area was aswarm with activity as cars and lorries poured forth, customs people did their duties, and everyone made for the London road(有二十分钟光景,多佛港站头上沸反盈天,这头轿车卡车势如潮涌,那厢海关差役恪尽职守,人人都忙着赶路去伦敦).-The ferry port was busy with activities for twenty minutes. A lot of cars and lorries went in continuous stream out of the port, customs officers were busy doing their duties, and everybody was moving towards the London road.2. I was socially and sartorially ill-suited for such an establishment and anyway it was clearly beyond my meager budget(就我这阶层,就我这身打扮,跟这么一栋楼是格格不入的,而且,不管怎么说吧,我口袋里那几个寒碜的子儿,显然付不起这笔开销).-The Churchill is such a luxurious hotel that it is only suitable for those rich people who are socially respectable and well dressed. For me, a poor man not well dressed, it is definitely not suitable. Besides I did not have much money to spend and could not afford it any way.3. Further along Marine Parade stood a shelter, open to the elements but roofed, and I decided that this was as good as I was going to get(沿着海滨大道再往前一段,矗立着一座棚屋,四壁洞开,但好歹有个屋顶,于是我认定能栖身此地对我已是能有的最好选择).-In the distance on the Marine Parade I found a structure with a roof although it was exposed to natural forces. I decided that it could serve my purpose and would be as good as a room in a guesthouse.4.The bench was slatted and hard and studded with big roundheaded bolts that made reclining in comfort an impossibilitydoubtless their intention(长凳上覆了层板条,硬邦邦的,还敲着圆头大螺钉,想舒舒服服地躺着根本不可能毫无疑问,他们这是存心的).-The bench was made of thin pieces of wood and thus very hard to sleep on. Besides it was decorated with big roundheaded bolts. Therefore it was impossible to lie on it in a comfortable way. There is no doubt that the bench was designed in this way on purpose.5. Afterwards, feeling a new man,I emerges with a toothpick and a burp, and sauntered happily through the streets, watching Dover come to life.It must be said that Dover was not vastly improved by daylight, but I like it(饭一吃完,顿感自己焕然一新,我叼着牙签,打着饱嗝,在大街小巷上闲逛,看着多佛港醒过来。说句实话,白昼的来临也并没有让多佛的面貌脱胎换骨,可我喜欢).-After the breakfast I felt like a new man and walked out of the cafe with a toothpick in my mouth and burped. I wandered on the street leisurely and happily, seeing Dover become more lively. I had to admit that Dover did not become a more attractive town during the daytime, but anyway I liked it. 6. But park systems in most developing countries are failing to invest at anywhere near the necessary levels to build capacity for managing the growth in park visits(但是大多数发展中国家的公园体系的投资增长却没达到维持公园游客增长所需的能力).-In most developing countries, parks are run in such a way that investment is far below the necessary amount to manage the growing number of visitors.7. The failure of destination countries to budget adequately for tourism management in parks is eroding the very natural capital that visitors travel to see(旅游目的地国家不能为旅游管理提供必要的经费已经消耗了不少游客所向往的自然资本了). -The destination countries do not invest enough in managing and preserving the parks so the result is that the natural sceneries that attract the visitors and bring the revenue are being destroyed.8. If the current levels of investment continue, the tourism boom is likely to be followed before long by a bust(如果继续按照目前的投资水平,旅游繁荣不久就会面临失败).-If we can continue to invest in the present inadequate level, the tourism will probably cease to prosper soon.9. Aside from managing the threats tourism poses, conservationists should also focus on developing the financial opportunity that the growth in tourism represents(除了应对旅游业带来的威胁,环境保护主义者还应专注于开发旅游业增长代表的金融机会).-On one hand, the conservationists need to deal with the environmental threats caused by tourism development; on the other hand, they should also concentrate on developing tourism in order to bring more economical development. 10. The Ecuadorian tourism industry has shown willingness to support such initiatives after analyzing financial projections that showed greater demand resulting from improved investment(厄瓜多尔旅游业经过对财务方案的分析,发现改善投资后会带来更多的需求,也愿意支持这些计划).-The Ecuadorian tourist businesses analyzed their prospects which showed an increase in investment would bring about a bigger market, so they are ready to introduce improved system, and at the same time increase charges on visitors, who are willing to pay appropriate fees.11. Conservationists around the world would do well to consider the implications for their own protected areas(全世界的环境保护主义者如果考虑一下这项措施对于他们自己国家的保护区意味着什么,也能取得不错的效果).-All the people in this world who advocate environmental protection should consider what the above mentioned actions will lead to the environment they protect; they should be aware that it is a win-win situation.UNIT21. Never mind the popular palaver about marriage as a source of bliss for the couple, security for the kids and societal stability(先不要管那些流行的空话,说婚姻是夫妻幸福的源泉、是孩子安全和社会稳定的保障).-You dont need to worry about what others say about marriage, for example, a large number of people say that married people can be very happy, their children can be protected and society can be stable if more people get married. But this is just nonsense if the practical aspect of marriage is not taken into account.2. Marriage is criticized as a source of stress(and it is),conflict(that too)and endless crises that need to be resolved(guilty there as well)(婚姻被指责为压力的根源(确实是这样)、矛盾冲突的原因(这也没错),并导致没完没了的危机亟需化解(同样难脱其咎)).-There are also negative opinions on marriage, for example, marriage can cause stress, conflict and crises. All these criticisms are correct and you have to solve these marriage-related problems.3. Depression and other emotional ills are less likely to go undiagnosed if theres someone at home whos mindful of your moods and notices if they darken(如果家里有个人非常留意你的心情,注意你的情绪变化,那么抑郁症和其它情感上的问题也不太可能得不到及时确诊).-After getting married, your spouse will be careful of your feelings and sensitive to the changes in your emotions. If you have any symptom of depression or other emotional ills, your spouse will notice it immediately.4. The daily stresses of the modern world can throw our bodies into emergency mode and keep us there. That takes a toll through high blood pressure, tension headaches and a lot of gnawed pencils(现代生活的日常压力会使我们的身体一直处于紧急状况中。这会对身体造成很大损害,让你患上高血压、紧张性头痛以及许多令人焦虑不安的病症).-In our daily work today, we have to cope with stress frequently and our bodies are often put into situations which need immediate action to deal with difficult and dangerous events. That has a bad effect on our bodies and may cause a lot of damage to our health, such as high blood pressure, tension headaches and other sufferings which make you feel worried and uncomfortable.5. While married men get relief from their workday barrage of stress hormones when they come home after a particularly busy day at work, working women are able to de-stress similarly only if they describe their marriage as a happy one(当已婚男人结束了特别繁忙的一天工作回到家时,他们摆脱了工作上接二连三的压力荷尔蒙的攻击,得到了放松;而职业女性中,只有那些称自己的婚姻很幸福的人,才能像男人这样消除压力).-Marriage can help men de-stress well. When they come back home after work they feel relieved from stress no matter how busy they are at work. But only those maritally satisfied women can get relief back home from their work stress as men do.6. Those tales of spouses who die within days of each other have more than a little truth to them(那些夫妻二人几天之内先后去世的故事还是有一些真实性的).-Its extremely true that bereaved spouses may die very soon after the others death.7. Certainly not all suddenly single spouses are fated to languish this wayno more than all people who never pair off are destined for a shortened life filled with illness and stress(当然,并非所有突然变成单身的人都注定遭受如此折磨同样,那些从未结婚的人也不是注定要短寿,并为疾病与压力所困).-Of course, not all suddenly bereaved spouses are bound to experience such emotional suffering. And not all those unmarried surely live a shorter life and suffer more from illness and stress than married people.8. Still, its hard to argue with an institution that keeps a companion and caretaker constantly nearby, even if now and againwhen a wet towel has once again been dropped on the floor or a tube of toothpaste has been squeezed all wrongwe may lose sight of that happy fact(有时候,当一条湿毛巾又一次被扔到地板上,或者一管牙膏被挤得不成样子时,我们可能会忘记婚姻带给我们幸福这个事实。即使如此,我们也很难不赞成婚姻这种制度,它让我们身边有一个伴侣时时刻刻关心照顾我们).-Marriage gives you a spouse who accompanies you and takes care of you. Although you may forget the happy fact of marriage due to daily trivialities, such as the wrong placement of a wet towel and the unpleasant squeeze of a tube of toothpaste by your spouse, you still cannot disagree on the benefits of the custom of marriage. UNIT31. The proposed law, which was designed to combat Frances 22.2 percent youth unemployment rate, would have allowed firms the freedom to hire workers under the age of 26 on a trial basis for the first two years(这项旨在应对法国22.2%青年失业率拟议中的法律,将给予公司在任期头两年以试用方式雇佣26岁以下员工的自由).-The CPE was officially designed to fight against the high youth unemployment rate in France. This new law offers flexibility to employers to hire young people under 26 for a two-year period of testing to see how well young employees do their jobs.2. A previous incarnation of the law, the New Employment Contract, applied similar provisions to small businesses with fewer than 20 employees and had successfully created up to 400,000 new jobs(早先实施的类似法规新雇佣合同将相似的规定适用于雇员少于20人的小公司,已经成功创造了40万个新的就业机会).-The New Employment Contract, an earlier form of the CPE, put similar practices into operation and created significant job opportunities in small businesses.3. The new measure would just make it easier for employers to hire cheap, disposable labor and keep young people in an unsteady netherworld of partial employment(新措施只会为雇主更容易地雇用廉价的、一次性劳力,并使年轻人生活在部分就业的不稳定的悲惨世界里). -The new law would make labor cheap and available at any time for employers to choose freely and this would subject young people to a miserable state of incomplete employment.4. Some lamented the public reaction as a sign of the “depth of popular misunderstanding regarding the realities of our globalizing economy.”(还有些评论家哀叹公众的反应标志着对“我们正在全球化的经济现实普遍误解的深度”)-Some critics believed that the massive protests showed the profundity of public misunderstanding concerning the ongoing economic globalization and expressed deep sorrow for this situation.5. In the eyes of many, the swifter the currents of globalization, the more fiercely the continental Europeans cling to the traditions of the welfare state(在许多人看来,全球化的洪流越快,欧洲大陆就越会固守福利国家的传统)-For many people, the more rapidly the world becomes globalized, the more firmly European Continental countries stick to the welfare state in the past.6. French resistance to change largely stems from a very different conception of the social contract between the citizen and the state in the realm of job security(法国抵制变革在很大程度上来源于人们对公民与国家在工作保障领域的社会契约持有与众不同的观念).-When it comes to employment, French opposition to change mainly comes from their distince notion of the relationship between the people and the government.7. Many advocates of greater economic liberalization attribute Frances economic stagnation and political deadlockconditions symptomatic of much of Europeto the“hypertrophy”of the welfare state(许多提倡更大的经济自由化的人将法国停滞的经济和政治僵局多数欧洲国家具有的症状归因于福利国家制度的“过度增长”).-Many proponents of liberal economics believe that the slow economic growth and political stalemete in France, a typical condition in most European countries, are the results of the excessive expansion of the welfare state. 8. With the word getting out about top-quality treatments at deep discounts overseas, informed patients are finding creative alternatives abroad(当海外有大折扣的高质量的医疗信息传出后,得到消息的患者发现在国外有意想不到的替代治疗).-When American patients come to know that there is an opportunity abroad to save thousands of dollars over the same treatment in the United States, they gather all necessary information and travel abroad for medical treatments.9. For decades, thousands of Canadian and British subscribers to universal, “free” healthcare plans have endured waits as long as two years for established procedures(几十年来,成千上万的加拿大和英国注册使用全民、“免费”医疗保健计划的人们为了既定程序已经忍受最长达两年的等待).-For decades, many Canadian and British patients covered by the national health system have spent as long as two years on their turn for the free medical treatment they are entitled to.10. As one veteran medical traveler put it, “I brought back far more from this trip than a new set of teeth.”(正如一位经验丰富的医疗游客所说“我从这次旅行带回来的远不止一套新牙”)-One patient who has many experiences in medical travel once said, after replacing his teeth abroad, that he has not only had a new set of teeth but learned a lot from the travel.UNIT41. But to their surprise, many people find that enduring such a harrowing ordeal ultimately changes them for the better(但出人意料的是,很多人发现遭受这样一次痛苦的磨难最终会使他们向好的方向转变).-People feel surprised that they finally have become better persons after undergoing such severely distressful experience.2. We love to hear the stories of people who have been transformed by their tribulations, perhaps because they testify to a bona fide psychological truth, one that sometimes gets lost amid endless reports of disaster: There is a built-in human capacity to flourish under the most difficult circumstances(我们都爱听人们经历苦难后发生转变的故事,可能是因为这些故事证实了一条真正的心理上的真理,这条真理有时会淹没在对灾难无数的报道中:在最困难的情况中,人所具有的一种内在的奋发能力会迸发出来). -We like to hear stories of how serious trouble might completely change people, because these stories really prove a psychological truth that is often neglected by people when facing a disaster, i.e. human beings have an inborn quality that can be fully displayed only in the most difficult situations.3. She never anticipated what would happen: a withdrawal reaction that eventually left her in total body agony and neurological meltdown(她从没预见到将要发生的事情:停药之后的反应最终使她全身剧烈疼痛,神经系统出现严重问题).-She never expected that stopping medication could finally lead to severe physical pains and neurological problems.4. But this time, she was way past her limits, and nothing her doctors did seemed to help(但是这一次,她实在不堪忍受了,她的医生所做的一切似乎都不起作用).-But this time it was more than she could bear, and all that the doctors did ended in vain.5. As her sleepless nights wore on, though, her suicidal thoughts began to be interrupted by new feelings of gratitude(在经历了若干不眠之夜后,她想自杀的念头开始被新的感激之情所打断). -But as the sleepless nights passed slowly, her attitude toward life began to change. She no longer wanted to commit suicide; instead, she began to feel grateful.6. She was still in agony, but a new consciousness grew stronger each night: an awesome sense of liberation, combined with an all-encompassing feeling of sympathy and compassion.“I felt stripped of everything Id ever identified myself with,”she said six months later(虽然她仍然感到痛苦,但一种新的意识每一夜都变得更加强烈:一种令人惊叹的解脱感,结合着一种包容一切的同情和怜悯的情感“我感到一切我曾经用来认同自己身份的东西都被剥夺了”6个月以后她这样说道).-She was still suffering from the severe pain, but she began to have a new feeling about life which was becoming increasingly stronger each day: an amazing feeling of freedom from pain, together with tolerance and sympathy.“I felt that everything I used to define myself is deprived now.”She said six months later.7. Now quieter and more tolerant, she makes a point of being submissive in a turn-the-other-cheek kind of way(她现在更安静宽容,在某一点她向另一个泰然容忍的方向转变了).-Now, she is quieter and more tolerant than before and always remains calm under any circumstances.8. In that moment, our sense of invulnerability is pierced, and the self-protective mental armor that normally stands between us and our perceptions of the world is torn away(在事情发生的瞬间,我们的安全感被冲破了,平时处于我们与我们对世界的种种看法之间的自我保护的精神盔甲被剥离了).-At that moment, we realize we are weak and vulnerable, and the spiritual power that we possess as a means of self-protection when we are looking at this world is taken away.9. They cycle through the same sequence of sensations as do trauma survivors: self-loss, confusion and, finally, a new sense of mastery(他们和经历创伤的幸存者所经历的感觉过程一样:自我失落,困惑,最后获得一种新的控制感).-They go through the same course of feelings like those who have experienced the emotional shock: feeling at a loss, and finally, gaining the new power.UNIT51. Cinemas hundred years seem to have the shape of a life cycle: an inevitable birth, the steady accumulation of glories, and the onset in the last decade of an ignominious, irreversible decline(电影百年似乎像一个生命周期:不可避免的诞生、不断累积的辉煌并在过去十年开始屈辱的、不可逆转的衰落).-The hundred years of development of cinema is like a life cycle. It contains birth, glorious process of growing, and the shameful decline which started about ten years ago and cannot be changed.2. Cinema, once heralded as the art of the twentieth century, seems now, as the century closes, to be a decadent art(电影曾经被认为是20世纪的艺术,在本世纪结束时,现在看来它似乎是一种颓废的艺术).-The appearance of films at the beginning of the twentieth century was once regarded as a promising new art, however, at the end of the century, films seem to fall to a lower and worse level.3. To be kidnapped, you have to be in a movie theater, seated in the dark among anonymous strangers(它基于这一信念电影是一种不同于其他任何形式的艺术:典型的现代化、特别易于理解、诗意、神秘而且有道德,所有这些特征并存).-For a person to become overwhelmed by the power of films, he or she has to be physically present in a movie theater, surrounded by unknown people.4. Now the balance has tipped decisively in favor of cinema as an industry(现在,这一平衡已经决定性地向电影作为一个产业倾斜).-In the century-long conflict between cinema as an art and cinema as an industry, the current development of filmmaking has unquestionably favored the latter.5. The catastrophic rise in production costs in the 1980s secured the worldwide reimposition of industry standards of making and distributing films on a far more coercive and global scale(80年代灾难性的生产成本上升确保了在世界范围内重新施加更具强制性的电影制作和发行行业标准).-The disastrous rise in production costs
