Where do you live? what are in the neighborhood?你家附近都有些什么场所?Encourage Ss to say out different places near their house.Then show pictures of post office, library, hotel, restaurant, bank, supermarket, street, pay phone, and park. Get Ss to read and learn the new words by heart. Step Match work (1a)1. Ask the students to read the picture and the words in the numbered list. T: In this unit, we are going to learn how to ask for and give directions on the street. First look at the picture on page 7. (Holding up the picture and pointing to the “bank”) Look! Whats this in English? Encourage or help the students to say the word bank. Write the word on the blackboard. T: (Point to “library”). Whats this in English? Encourage or help the students to say the word library. Write the word on the blackboard. .Go on with the others in the same way. Then point out the numbered list of words. Say each one and ask the students to repeat.2. Ask the students to match each word or phrase on the list with one of the pictures. T: Please write the letter of each place in the picture next to the correct word or phrases on the list. Are you clear? Check the answers in the following way. T: A street is a public road in a city or town that has houses, stores etc. on one or both sides. An avenue is used in the names of streets in a town or city. We can see two streets in the picture: BRIDGE ST and CENTER ST. And an avenue: FIFTEH AVENUE. Now look and find out what buildings are on each street or avenue. 3. Present the new sentence patterns. T: (Point to the picture) Look at the picture carefully and answer my questions: Is there a post office near here?Encourage or help the students to answer: Yes, there is. It is on Bridge Street.T: Is there a bank near here?Ask them to answer the questions.Ss: Yes, there is. Its on Center Street.Then ask the students to role play the conversation in the picture.Step Listening (1b)Ask the students to listen to the conversations and circle the places in 1a. T: Next well listen to three conversations and youll have to circle the places you hear on the tape. Play the recording and ask the students to repeat after the recording this way: Girls repeat the questions and boys the answers. Girls: Is there a restaurant on Fifth Avenue?Boys: Yes, there is. .Change the roles and do the same again. Boys: Is there a restaurant on Fifth Avenue?Girls: Yes, there is. Then students ask and answer without the help of the recording. Step Practice1. Point to the different locations shown in the picture. Ask different students to name each one.T: I will point out the different locations in the picture. Please name each one when I point it out. And the others have to repeat after him or her. Point to the restaurant. Call a students name.S1: Restaurant.Ss: Restaurant.Point to the park. Call another students name. S2: Park.Ss: Park.Then point to more locations and let the students to practice more.2. Show the following. Ask the students to work in pairs and practice the conversation in 1c. Ask the students to do chain work.T: Now lets do some chain work. One of you asks a question. Now open your books and turn to page 7. Look at the picture. (Turning to a student) Is there a hotel near here?S1: Yes, there is.T: Where is it?S1: Its on Bridge Street. T: (Turning to a second student) Is there a restaurant near here? S2: Yes, there is. T: Where is it?S2: Its on Fifth Avenue. T: Where is it?S5: Its on Center Street. .Ask the students to practice more.Step Presentation (2a)1. Introduce the items across from, next to, between, in front of, behind and on. Draw the following picture on the blackboard.T: Please look at the picture. Ask the students to match the sentences with the pictures. First ask the students to talk about the pictures. T: There are six pictures in 2a. What places can you see in each picture? Look at the first one. Whats in it?S: Green Street and a pay phone. T: Good. Where is the pay phone?S: Its on Green Street. Go on with the other pictures in the same way. .Then ask the students to read the six sentences and match the sentences with the pictures. T: There are six sentences under these pictures. Each sentence talks about one of the pictures. Read these sentences aloud and match them with the pictures. Check the answers.Step Listening (2b) 1. Review the building and street names in Activity 1a and the six sentences in 2a.T: Please turn back to page 7. Say the name of each building and the street and ask and answer the questions about the place. Look at the example. Show the following. A: (Point to the word “library” and read) “library”. Is there a library here?B: “Yes, there is.”A: Where is it?B: Its on FIFTH AVENUE. Its between the restaurant and supermarket. .Go on with the others.2. And then read the six sentences in 2b to the class. T: Now I will read the six sentences in Activity 2b to you. I will say “blank” each time I come to a blank line. 3. Ask the students to listen to the recording and fill in the blanks. T: Now you are going to hear the recording of six conversations. Listen carefully and write a word from the box on each blank line. Point out the sample answer. Play the tape. Then check the answers by asking the students to read the completed sentences. Step Pairwork (2c)1. Ask the students to repeat the conversations after the recording. T: I will play the recording of the six conversations again. This time, read after the recording. Girls repeat the questions and boys the answers. Then change the roles and repeat again. 2. Ask the students to do the Pairwork asking and answering questions about the places in 1a. T: Now work in pairs to ask about the buildings in Activity 1a. First one person asks a question and then the other person takes a turn. And you have to use the words in the box in Activity 2b. I will explain how to do it. The first one point to the map and ask “Where is the park?” and the second has to answer “Its across from the bank.” Are you clear? Sample dialogues: 1) S: Where is the library?R: Its between the restaurant and the supermarket.2) S: Where is the hotel?R: Its across from the post office.3) S: Where is the park?R: Its behind the post office. 4) S: Where is the pay phone?R: Its next to the post office.5) S: Where is the post office?R: Its in front of the park. 3. Further practice (See Teaching resources III)Step V Grammar FocusAsk the students to read the sentences in the grammar box aloud. Then ask them to answer the following questions. T: (Show the following words and phrase on the screen: across from, on, next to, between) Look at these words. Which words talk about two different buildings?Ss: Across from, next to and between. T: Which one talks about one building all alone?Ss: On.Explain some language points if the students cant understand.Step HomeworkAsk the students to practice talking about their neighborhood in pairs. Sample dialogues:S1: (Point to Picture 1) Where is the pay phone in the first picture?S2: Its on Green Street.S3: (Point to Picture 2) Where is the pay phone in the second picture?S4: Its behind the library. S5: (Point to Picture 3) Where is the pay phone in the third picture?S6: Its next to the library.Step Presentation (3a)1. Guide the students to learn the meanings of the three traffic signs. Show the above picture and ask some questions about the pictures.T: Look at the first sign. What is the meaning of it?Encourage or help the students to answer “Go straight.” Read the word “straight”, and ask the students to repeat. T: Look at the second sign. Whats the meaning of it? Encourage or help the students to answer “Turn left”. Read the words “Turn left” and ask the students to repeat. Go on with the third sign in the same way. .Then ask the students to hold up their left hands and then their right hands to practice “left” and “right”. T: (Asking two students to come to the front) S1 and S2, listen to me and do what I tell you. OK? Turn left! Turn left! Turn right! Turn left! S1 turn left and S2 turn right .The two students show the action. 2. Point to the picture and let the students read the conversation. First ask the students to say the names of the places in the picture. S1: (Point to the picture) Heres the hotel, the bank, the park, the post office, the pay phone.S2: Heres BRIDEGE STREET, NEW STREET. Ask the students to read the conversation. Then ask them to find Paul and Nancy in the picture. T: Please work in pairs and read the conversation. One of you reads and the other points out the route in the picture. And then tell me where you can find Paul and Nancy in the picture. The students show the position of Paul and Nancy. Ask the students to role play the conversation and then point out the place that Paul wants to get to. 3. PracticeT: Suppose you are at a place in the picture and you want to get to a place and you dont know the way. You have to ask for directions. Now work in pairs. Ask some pairs to present their conversations to the class. Sample conversation 1:One student are standing near the phone. He / She wants to go to the post office.S1: Excuse me. Is there a post office in the neighborhood?S2: Yes, there is. Just go straight and its down Bridge Street on the left. Its next to the supermarket.S1: Thank you very much.S2: Youre welcome.Sample conversation 2: One student are outside the hotel and he / she wants to find a park.S1: Excuse me. Is there a park in the neighborhood?S2: Yes, there is. Just go straight and turn right. Its across from a restaurant.S1: Thank you very much.S2: Youre welcome.Step Complete the conversations (3b)Ask the students to make conversations and answer the questions below each picture.T: The three pairs of speakers in these pictures correspond to three pairs in the large picture in 3a above. Please find the pairs in the picture. Then work in pairs, and ask and answer the questions below each picture in 3b. Sample conversation 1: S1: Is there a pay phone in the neighborhood?S2: Yes, there is. Go straight down New Street and turn right. Theres a pay phone on the right. T: Where are the speakers?The students point out the place in the picture. And write down the answers on the line in the pictures. Or ask a pair of students to say the conversation, the others point to the speakers place.Sample conversation 2: S3: Wheres the bank?S4: Go straight down New Street and turn right. Turn left at Bridge street. The bank is across from the street. T: Where are the speakers?The students point out the place in the picture. Sample conversation 3: S5: Is there a post office in the neighborhood?S6: Yes, there is. Turn right, then go straight down Bridge Street. The post office is on the left. Its across from the restaurant, next to the supermarket. T: Can you find the speakers?The students point out the place in the picture. Step Game (4) 1. Ask the students to look at the picture in Activity 1a and name all the buildings. T: Turn back to page 7. Look at the picture in 1a again. Please name all the buildings in the picture.2. Ask some students to read the conversation in the picture in Activity 4. And then explain the instruction to the student.T: Now lets do a game. Work in groups. One person chooses a building in the picture in 1a on page 7 without telling anyone the name. The others ask questions like those in Activity 4 until they guess which building it is. Take turns choosing the building for the others to guess. Then ask some groups to present their work.A sample game conversation:(S1 chooses the pay phone.
