“By Pins Men Come to Greater Pains”Macbeth, King Lear, Hamlet and Otello are acknowledged as the four most famous tragedies of Shakespeares.There is a war between good and evil in Macbeth, the main character. He is ambitious, but he wants to reach his ambition through proper methods. He refuses to play tricks, but he murders the king.Through courage and great feat, Macbeth hails his triumph. Under ambitions, murders, and lies, Macbeth declines to indignity and loss of his life. “Men in great place are thrice servants: servants of the sovereign or state; servants of fame; and servants of business.” When his hands touched Duncans blood, Macbeth then starts a series of murders. To cover his sins, Macbeth needs more killings. He becomes so sensitive and suspicious that he disbelieves everybody and eradicates those who seem to be the potential threat to his reign. Banque, the Thane of Fife, who has refused Macbeths bribe, comes first, followed by innumerable innocent people from different classes. He has successfully usurped the throne, so he must be very careful, for fear that he would be killed in the same way, just like what he has done to Duncan. His desire for power turns to the desire for desire itself. He pursues desire and finally desire fails him.But at last he fails to escape being killed. He owes his failure to the destiny, which seems to be as ridiculous as XiangYu, a hero in Chinese history, owed his failure to his destiny. The loss of the last battle may have something to do with the destiny, but the process before the failure is caused by himself. It is he himself, not the God, who makes him a tyrant. Undoubtedly, Macbeth is a hero, a military talent, but he is blinded by his ambition, which results in the tragedy. In Macbeth, witches and their prophets run through the plot of the whole tragedy, playing up a gloomy, horrible and tragic atmosphere. Someone may say those witches have magic power to determine Macbeths life, but I beg to differ. If there are no such witches, will his destiny be changed? No. the words from those witches are just the reflection of what Macbeth is thinking about. But he can not let those words out, so the author creates three witches to say those words for Macbeth. He hesitates at first, but soon be defeated by his ambition. He says, “Stay, you imperfect speakers, tells me more.” He wants to know more about his future, for he knows, in his country, he is more powerful than the king. So after he becomes the Thane of Cawdor, he is convinced that those witches are right. Since then, he has made up his mind to usurp the throne, because he has a perfect excusehis destiny.In this sense, Macbeth seems to be an evil person. But he is not a pure evil at the beginning. He wants to be the king, but he does not want to hurt Duncan. “If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me, with out my stir.” But for his wifes abetment, he would not murder the king. I have watched the play about this scene. Macbeth does not make up his mind to commit the crime at first. He has two reasons to persuade himself not to kill Duncan: firstly, there are two kinds of trust; the other is that Duncan has not done anything wrong. He is in a dilemma when his wife, Lady Macbeth, begins to egg on him to kill the king. He even has the illusion before he begins his crime, which shows that he is not that evil at first. But at last he commits the crime and becomes the new king. If Macbeth does not have so much ambition, or if he could control his ambition, the result would be totally different. A question: who benefits from this whole affair? Macbeth or Lady Macbeth? No! Banquo? The witches? Macbeth is called a tragedy because the hero in the movie finally dies in a tragic manner: he exchanged his fame, his conscience and his “innocent sleep” for vanity, yet vanity pays him with his failure Macbeth gets hailed and killed. Lady Macbeth has a brain, yet in vain, she comes insane. In the last class, Mr. Xiong asked me to make a comparison either between the movie and the play, or between the movie and the book. So I have searched on the Internet and found a play. The methods used to present a certain scene. In the movie, the cruelty of war and Macbeth feats can be valued by audiences eyes. The bloody scenes impress we audience deeply. The witches magic can be specified by different movie tricks. The movie has better stunts scenes that are more natural or closer to real life. The banquet and the murder of Banquo are much better presented: in the movie, for example, when Banquo and his son are strolling in the woods, the killers are cutting trees to force Banquo off his horse thus making it easier to kill. Again, it is in the “woods” that ends Macbeths ambition. So the woods and heath can present the latter plots. However, the theatre version can not have such effect. In fact, theatre needs more closely bound performance, music, stage properties and interaction among the spectators in the theatre. Soliloquy, for example, can be a bridge between the audience and Shakespeare and Macbeth. The bridge, in a sense, can connect the actors and the spectators too. In the movie, however, the lines can only connect the production with actors instead of the audience. Scenes on the stage are densely abstracted play excerpts. As for illusions: in the movie, we can see what Macbeth sees, thus peeping deep corners of his heart. We see the sword (dagger) in his eyes as well as in his mind.
