And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago, I have to admit Im still only an adequate(尚可的)listener.Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. Its being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond(回答). In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic(象征性的)of the way we live. We often treat communication as if it were a race. Its almost like our goal is to have no time gaps between the conclusion of the sentence of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe having lunch, overhearing the conversations around us. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another; instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face, she said, “Only sometimes.”Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person. It takes pressure from you. If you think about it, youll notice that it takes an extremely large amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you (or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish,as you simply listen more carefully to what is being said, youll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You will immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they wont feel in competition with you for “air time”! Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person, it will also add to the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.1According to the passage, an effective listener should_.Aaccept the speakers thought critically(批评地)Brespond to the speakers words slowlyCwait for the chance to respond patientlyDreply the speakers question patiently答案:C根据第二段第二句“Its being content to listen to the entire thought of somone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond.”可以确定答案为C。2My wifes words means that sometimes I_.Aoverhear other peoples conversationsBmay enter a cafe for having lunchCawait patiently my chance to respondDdo not really listen to others statement答案:D根据第二段“It seemed that no one was really listening to one another;instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing.”可以确定答案。3When talking with others, you will feel relaxed by_.Asitting at the edge of the seatBslowing down your responsesCguessing the speakers thoughtDresponding to the speaker quickly答案:B根据第三段第一句以及“But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish, as you simply listen more carefully to what is being said, youll notice that the pressure you feel is off.”可以判定答案为B。BSince many of you are planning to study at a college or university in this country, you may be curious to know what you usually do in a typical week, how you can get along with your fellow students, and so on. These are the questions I want to discuss with you today.First, lets talk about what your weekly schedule will look like. No matter what your major may be, you can expect to spend between four and six hours a week for each class attending lectures. Lectures are usually in very large rooms because some courses such as introduction to sociology or economics often have as many as two or three hundred students, especially at large universities. In lectures, its very important for you to take notes on what the professor says because the information in a lecture is often different from the information in your textbooks. Also, you can expect to have exam questions based on the lectures. So it isnt enough to just read your textbooks;you have to attend lectures as well. In a typical week you will also have a couple of hours of discussion for every class you take. The discussion section is a small group meeting usually with fewer than thirty students where you can ask questions about the lectures, the reading, and the homework. In large universities, graduate students, called teaching assistants, usually direct discussion sections. If your major is chemistry, or physics, or another science, youll also have to spend several hours a week in the lab, or laboratory, doing experiments. This means that science majors spend more time in the classroom than nonscience majors do. On the other hand, people who major in subjects like literature or history usually have to read and write more than science majors do.4The main purpose of this text is_.Ato help the students to learn about university lifeBto persuade the students to attend lecturesCto encourage the students to take part in discussionsDto advise the students to choose proper majors答案:D概括归纳题。第一段交代了本文写作的目的。5We can learn from the passage that university professors _.Aspend about 5 hours on lectures each weekBmust
