When writing, refer to persons with a disability in the samestyle as persons without adisability: full name on firstreference and last name onsubsequent references. Adult athletes are anintegral part of the movement. Do not use the word “the” in frontof Special Olympics unlessdescribing a specific SpecialOlympics event or official. Do not use the adjective“unfortunate”whentalkingabout persons with intellectualdisabilities. Disabling conditionsdo not have to be life-defining ina negative way. Donot sensationalizetheaccomplishments of personswith disabilities. While theseaccomplishments should berecognized and applauded,people in the disability rightsmovement have tried to makethe public aware of the negativeimpact of referring to the achievements of people withphysical or intellectualdisabilitieswith excessivehyperbole.
