The diplomats will discuss a proposed truck service for trade along a Kashmir bus service path. The bus service was opened last year for passengers between the Indian Kashmir capital Srinatar and the Pakistanian Kashmir capital Muzaffarabad.Text 5 American military official say coalition troops have killed 15 to 20 militants in the past two days in Southern Afghanistan. Violence continued Monday with several bomb attacks. Two bombers killed themselves in explosions in woodisghan(sp) and Hepman(sp) provinces. And another bomb exploded near a group of coalition vehicles in Southern Kandahar province. Violent attacks have increased in Afghanistan as NATO deploys additional troops in the countryText 6 In the United States, immigrants and their supporters are holding a nation wide strike and business boycott. They aim to pressure American lawmakers to act on proposed immigration reform. The strike and boycott is meant to show how important illegal immigrants are to the nations workforce and economy. There are 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. The proposed immigration legislation would increase border security. It would also provides illegal immigrants with the process to gain American citizenship.Text 7 Three people have died in a snow slide on a mountain in central Japan. Two others were injured. All the victims were climbing the mountain at the time. The snow slide has reached the size of 40 meters across. Accidents linked to snow have killed more than 100 people in Japan this year. In one accident, 300 people had to be rescued from a train that was blocked by a snow slide in the Akita area.Text 8 Iraqi police say at least 9 people have been killed in a bombing near Akotas(sp) in Baghdad. More than 40 others are wounded. Police say a person exploded the bomb in a crowd of people waiting to enter the Kothaos(sp). Hours earlier, an Iraqi General was shot and killed in the capital as he drove to work. Also in Baghdad, the American military said a roadside bomb killed 2 soldiers. In Ar Ramadi, west Bagdad, Iraqi police say at least 13 people died in an American air attack on a house.Text 9 The Roman Catholic church has criticized China for appointing two top church officials without Vatican approval. Church official in Rome said the action violates religious freedom. Their statement says Pope Benedict was deeply saddened by the news. It says those involved could face punishment under church law. Only the Pope can appoint bishops under Roman Catholic law. In Beijing, the Chinese foreign ministry said the Vaticans condemnation does not make sense. The ministry said the Chinese bishops were appointed by a democratic process.Text 10 The group human right watch says North Korea could suffer the wide spread starvation of the 1990s unless it changes its food policies. The group said recent decisions by North Korea to suspend the operation of the United Nations world food program could lead to severe problems. Last year, North Korea said it no longer wanted UN food aid, because its food production had increased. Food shortages dating back to before 1995 have killed at least 1 million North Koreans.Text 11 Warring groups from the Darfur area of Sudan are facing a time limit on Thursday to reach agreement to end the civil war. African Union negotiators and American and British diplomats are negotiating the agreement. They are pressing the Sudanese government and two rebel groups to sign a peace plan by 23 hours universal time. United States deputy secretary of state, Robert Zoellick is leading the talks. They continued late into the night on Wednesday in Abuja, the capital of Nigeria.Text 12 In Afghanistan, three attacks have killed at least 7 people. 2 Italian soldiers were killed when a bomb exploded near their vehicles in Kabul. 4 other Italians were injured in the attack. Italy has almost 2000 troops deployed as part of a NATO peacekeeping force in Afghanistan. In Halmon(sp) province, anther bomb attack killed a tribal chief, a member of his family and a guard. Separately, suspected Taliban fighters killed 2 policemen in a surprise attack there. Text 13 In Britain, Prime Minister Tony Blair has begun reorganizing his Cabinet after his Labor Party lost many seats in local elections. Mr. Blair replaced Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw with Margaret Beckett. She had been Environment Minister. Many political observers saw the elections Thursday as a vote on Mr. Blairs leadership. Early returns show his party lost at least 251 seats. The main opposition party gained at least 249 seats.Text 14 China has confirmed cases of the H5N1 bird flu virus among wild birds in Western China. The Ministry of agriculture said the cases were identified after 123 birds were found dead in Qinghai province. The bird flu virus killed more than 1000 geese in that area last year. Many wild birds are known to travel across Qinghai. Researchers believe wild birds from the area may have carried the virus to Europe. Text 15 The President of Iran said Iran would continue developing fuel for its nuclear power station. He described the nations that are attempting to stop Irans nuclear activities as aggressors. On Thursday, officials of the 5 permanent members of the United Nations Security Council discussed a proposed resolution on Irans nuclear program. The resolution was proposed by Britain and France, and strongly supported by the United States. Text 16 The Sri Lankan navy and air force have attacked boats belonging to Tenor Tiger(sp) rebels near the countrys northwestern coast. At least 1 of the rebels boats was reported sunk. A Sri Lankan spokesman said the rebels attacked 2 navy gunboats .He said the navy and air force fired back at the rebels. Official said one of the rebels boats exploded during the clash. They said the boat was probably carrying explosives and designed to explode. Text 17 The United States and appeal court has approved payment at least 35 million to a group of Philippine citizens. The money belong to the former Philippine leader, Ferdinand Marcos .The group sought assistance for human right violations during his rule. The court ruled Thursday that almost 10 thousand people could divide investments held for Marcos by an American financial business. The former president died in Aggzile(sp) 1989. Text 18 A United States military helicopter has crashed while carrying out military operations in Eastern Afghanistan. All 10 American soldiers on the helicopter were killed. A military spokeswoman said the helicopter went down Friday near Asadabad(sp),the capital of Kunan(sp) province. The crash area is east of the Afghan capital of Kabul, near the border with Pakistan. Officials are investigating the crash. Last month, more than 2000 American and Afghan soldier launched an offensive in Kunar(sp) in an effort to find Taliban and Akaida(sp) militants.Text 19 Parliamentary elections are being held in Singapore. The political party of Prime Minister Li Xunlong is expected to win enough votes to receive a majority in Parliament. Mr. Lis Peoples Action party has already won 37 seats in Parliament. The main opposition groups have candidates competing for the 47 remaining seats .The Peoples Action party has held a majority in Parliament since 1965. It currently holds all but 2 seats. Text 20 The United Nations diplomat for East Timor says United Nations troops should lead peace keeping efforts in the country. UN official ( ) spoke to the Security Council on Friday. He said last weeks riot in the capital Dili, show how weak democracy is in the country. The protest began following the dismissal last month of 600 soldiers from the East Timor army. During the demonstrations, 5 people were killed and as many as 14,000 people fled their homes. Text 21 The Chinese government has criticized a United States report on Chinese religious freedom. China says the report could harm the relations between the 2 countries. In its yearly report released Wednesday, the United States Commission on International religious freedom said the Chinese government is responsible for severe violations of religious freedom. Chinese official Liu Zhaochang released the statement Saturday. He accused the American organization of interfering in China. Text 22 Russia says a United Nations proposed resolution on Irans nuclear program must be changed. Britain and France prepared the resolution with support from the United States. Russia and China object to language in the resolution. The proposal will permit restrictions and military force against Iran should continue and reaching uranium. Russians ambassador to the United Nations said the Security Council proposed resolution should have one goal that is to make sure the nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.Text 23 Iran says any action against its nuclear program by the United Nations would be illegal and could lead to a clash with the west. Irans foreign ministry announced the warning on Sunday. Iranian lawmakers say they will demand an examination of a term of the nuclear non-proliferation Treaty. The term or part permits members to withdraw. Iranian lawmakers say they will be forced to consider withdraw from the international treaty if the UN Security Council approves possible military action against Iran. Text 24 In Singapore, an opposition politician says police seized him for threatening the countrys elected officials. Workers party candidate James Gomez was defeated in general elections on Saturday. He says police stopped him at the airport and accused him of making criminal threats. Police did not comment, but reports say they arrest maybe link to accusations by Mr. Gomez against election officials. Mr. Gomez later apologized for the accusation. Text 25 United Nations Humanitarian Chief Yang Jan Egeland has arrived at the Darfur area of western Sudan to examine the needs of people there. Mr. Egeland plans to visit rebel held areas and to hold talks with government officials. On Friday, the Sudanese government and the main rebel group in Darfur reached a peace agreement. It is designed to end three years of fighting in Darfur. Two other Sudanese rebel groups do not accept the agreement.Text 26 Thousands of workers for the World Health Organization have began a campaign against the disease, Polio, along the Afghan, Pakistani border. Health officials hope to treat 16 million children under age five. The door-to-door campaign has to last for 3 days. Five new cases of Polio have been reported in Afghanistan this year, 2 have been reported in Pakistan. The WHO began its campaign to end Polio in 1988. At that time, there were 350,000 cases around the world. Text 27 The Iranian government says President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has offered new proposals to ease tension between the United States and Iran. A government official says Mr.Ahmadinejad sent a letter to President Bush. The Iranian official says the letter offers new ways of settling disputes about Irans nuclear program. In Washington, American National Security Advisor, Steven Hardly said he did not know of any such proposal from Iran. In New York, Foreign Ministers from the United Nations Security Council and Germany are meeting to talk about Iran.Text 28 The Indonesian Health Ministry says international tests show that bird flu cause the death of an Indonesian man last month. The man has spent time near birds infected with the avian flu virus. Indonesian official say the tests were carried out at a laboratory in Hong Kong that is linked with the World Health Organization. The man is the 25th person to die of bird flu in Indonesia since 2003. Only Vietnam has a higher number of human deaths from bird flu.Text 29 A new world bank report says the financial crisis in the Palestinian territories is worst than expected. The report says it could lead to a humanitarian crisis. It also says the financial problems could destroy the Palestinian authority that governs the territories. Western governments stopped sending aid to the Palestinian government when the Hamas organization took power. These governments say Hamas must recognize Israel and reject violence. The Palestinian government has not been able to pay the money it owes to 165,000 government employees for their work in April or May.Text 30 In China, 3 young children were killed Monday morning when an attacker burned their school room in Henan Province. 13 other children and the teacher were injured in the fire. The Xinhua News Agency says the attacker is a man who lives in the village where the school is. Police have identified the man and are trying to arrest him. Attacks on Chinese schools have been increasing. In October, at least 16 students were wounded when a man fired a gun at a school in Anhui Province.Text 31 Voting has restarted on the island nation of Fiji. Citizens are choosing members of Parliament. The elections open Saturday. There were reports that ballots arrived late at some stations. There were also reports that some people were not permitted to vote because their names were not on official voter list. The Parliamentary elections will continue for a week. The main competition is between the party of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase and that of Mahendra Chaudhry who was ousted as Prime Minister who was ousted in Nakoo(sp) in 2000.Text 32 Palestinian security official say 3 Palestinian have died in an Israeli air strike in the Gaza Strip. Official said another Israeli air strike minutes earlier wounded 1 Palestinian. The attacks came as thousands of Palestinians gathered in the southern Gaza Strip to bury a Palestinian militant leader. ( ) was killed in an Israeli attack on Thursday. Mourners in the town of Raffa expressed anger over his death. Text 33 In Australia, 2 miners who were trapped underground for 2 weeks have attended the funeral of a 3rd miner. The funeral for Larry Night was held in Tasmania. He died April 25th when an earthquake sent tons of rocks into a mine. Some of the rocks trapped the 2 survivors Brad Witz and Todd Rustle in a small metal container. Rescue workers discovered them 5 five days after the earthquake. They were rescued early Tuesday. Text 34 United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has strongly condemned the killing of an African Union worker in the Darfur area of Sudan. The incident happened Monday in the Coma refugee camp. At the time, the UNs top humanitarian official Jan Egeland was visiting the camp. Mr. Egeland was forced to flee when demonstrators seeking protection from peacekeeping troops turned violent. The UN group was able to escape, but the African Union worker was later killed.Text 35 A humanitarian group says about 2 million babies born every year in developing countries died during the first 24 hours of life. Save the children said most of the newborns died from preventable courses, like infections and low birth weight. The group said many lives could be saved if clean medical tools were used during childbirth. It also urges education for mothers about how to care for their babies. The group compares the condition of mothers and babies in 125 nations. Among the 33 industrial countries studied, the United States was next to last. Text 36 Russian President Vladimir Putin said the main goal of his government is to improve the living conditions of Russian citizens. He urged Russian lawmakers to work together to improve the lives of citizens. He suggested creating a financial reason for husbands and their wives to have a 2nd child. He proposed financial assistance of about 100 dollars a month. Mr. Putin said this would help increase the birthrate. He added that Russias population is falling by 700,000 people each year.Text 37 Nepalese official say rebels had kidnapped at least 5 policemen in an area south west of Katmandu. Police say the incident happened late Tuesday in Nawol Parasi(sp) district. Rebel leaders declared the 3-month- cease-fire last month. The Nepalese government also announced the cease-fire. In other news, the rebels say they will return land and houses the seized during their 10-year long rebellion.
