Unit 4 Body language Book 4 I. Yesterday another student and I, 1 our universitys student association, went to meet this years international students. After half an hour of waiting, I saw several young people enter the waiting area looking around 2 . I went forward to 3 them. After being introduced, they greeted each other in different ways, causing some 4 and culture mistakes. As I get to know more international friends, I learn more about this culture 5 . Not all cultures greet each other the same way, nor are they comfortable in the same way with touching or distance between people. In the same way that people 6 with spoken language, they also express their feelings through physical distance, actions or 7 . These actions are simply ways in which cultures have developed. I have seen, however, that cultural customs for body language are very general-not all members of a culture 8 in the same way. 9 , though, studying international customs can certainly help 10 difficulties in todays world of cultural crossroads.II. Body language is one of the most powerful 1 of communication, often even more powerful than spoken language. People around the world show all kinds of feelings, wishes and attitudes that they might never speak aloud. It is possible to “read” others around us, even if they do not 2 us to catch their unspoken communication. Of course, body language can be misread, but many gestures and actions are 3 .The most universal facial expression is, of course, the smile-its 4 is to show happiness and put people at ease. It does not always mean that we are truly happy, however. Smiles around the world can be 5 , hiding other feelings like anger, fear or worry. There are unhappy smiles, such as when someone “loses face” and smiles to hide it. However, the general 6 of smiling is to show good feelings.Being respectful to people is 7 , based on each culture, but in general it is probably not a good idea to give a hug to a boss or teacher. In almost every culture, it is not usually good to stand too close to someone of a higher 8 . Standing at a little distance with open hands will show that I am willing to listen. With so many culture differences between people, it is great to have some 9 in body language. We can often be wrong about each other, so it is an 10 thing that we understand each other as well as we do!III. Not all cultures use the handshake, and people in many Asian 1 do not always touch other person. The 2 greeting in China was to cover the left hand with the right and bow. Japanese people might cover one hand with the other and, 3 whom they are greeting, bow slightly or quite low. In India, Hindu people join their hands in front of their faces and bow their heads. A Muslin 4 touch his heart, mouth and forehead to show 5 . Even young people in the West now give each other the “high five”, 6 they slap each others hands high in the air. They are all keeping their hands busy. In almost all cultures, to smile and show an open right hand 7 , “Welcome, you are 8 with me.”Unit 4representing, greet, curiosity, misunderstanding, body language, communicate, posture, behave, in general, avoid, means, intend for, universal, function, false, purpose, subjective, rank, similarities, amazing, cultural, traditional, depend, will, respect, when, means, safe.
