【毕业论文】论威尼斯商人中的人物夏洛克 标题论威尼斯商人中的人物夏洛克 作者孙 会 关键词英国文学莎士比亚夏洛克威尼斯商人 指导老师白 敏 专业英语教育 正文1 IntroductionThe Merchant of Venice is a well-known play by William Shakespeare in 1596 Ever since the play was produced there have been a lot of disputes about its genre theme characters and the writers intention in it Shylock is the plays antagonist of all the characters in the play He is the most controversial and fascinating one Though he appears in only five out of twenty scenes in The Merchant of Venice Shylock has attracted the major share of interest in the dramas long history on the stage and in critical literature Ones first association with The Merchant of Venice is invariably ShylockShylockhas become a term of disapproval a link in the history of anti-Jewish stereotype just as Shylockspound of fleshhas become a metaphor for cruel and relentless greed 1The experience of this stereotype still makes many uncomfortable with The Merchant of VeniceAs a result the trend has developed of reversing the apparent tendency of drama Shylock is portrayed not as a hateful character but as one who commands our sympathies This paper doesnt simply classify Shylock as a tragic or comic figure but aims to analyze Shylock under the background of the social and religious peculiarities of the time and to demonstrate that Shylock is a multi-dimensional character and Shakespeare reveals that social factors and Shylocks personality result in his tragic life2 Shakespeare and His WorksWilliam Shakespeare is one of the most remarkable playwrights and poets the world has ever known Ben Jonson once wrote a poem eulogizing Shakespeare as beingNot of an age but for all time!2With his 37plays 154 sonnets and 2 long poems he has established his giant position in world literature He has also been given the highest praises by various scholars and critics the world over In the past four hundred years books and essays on Shakespeare and his works have kept coming out in large quantities The greatest of all English authors William Shakespeare belongs to those rare geniuses of mankind who have become landmarks in the history of world culture3He is the greatest playwright in the Elizabethan AgeShakespeares greatness as a playwright and the success of his plays on the stage from Elizabethan England up to the present-day world chiefly depend upon his penetrating exposition of human nature his lively paintings of human life and his truthful reflections of human reality His works provide us with a vivid and authentic panorama of his age All this for Shakespeare has been achieved through his unremitting endeavor in bringing about his lofty ideal of humanism and his painstaking efforts in mastering various techniques He is not only a master of English language but also a genius of character portrayal and plot construction He has been universally acknowledged to be the summit of the English RenaissanceHis works is a great landmark in the history of the world literature At the same time Shakespeare is one of the first founders of realism a master hand at realistic portrayal of human characters and relations3 A Brief Introduction to The Merchant of VeniceThe Merchant of Venice is a well-known play by William Shakespeare It is a satirical comedy believed to have been written in 1596 was an examination of hatred and greedyThe premise deals with the antagonistic relationship between Shylock a Jewish money-lender and Antonio the Christian merchant who is as generous as Shylock is greedy In the play Antonio in order to help his friend Bassinio to woo Portia of Belmont he borrows 3000 ducats for three months from Shylock a Jewish usurer and sings a contract If the money is not repaid on time he will forfeit a pound of flesh With the money Bassinio succeeds in proposing to Portia After three months Antonio being unable to repay the money is requested by Shylock to forfeit the flesh At that critical moment Portia disguised as a lawyer wittily helped Antonio out of trouble and make Shylock a convictThe Merchant of Venice is the most peculiar and controversial one among Shakespeares comedies This play is a controversial play when it was written and it stills now In the Renaissance Tucker Brooke calls itOne of the gravest of comedies and capable of being read as a tragedy A play of motley ingredients and Gothic atmosphere and has no particular congener in the Shakespeare canon4 Ever since the play was produced there have been a lot of disputes about its genre themes characters and the writers intention in it These controversies are mainly caused by the ambiguity in the text Shakespeare often incorporates in one character several different and even conflicted traits and thus leaves a wide rang of interpretation
