The final bell rings. Its the last day of school, and summer has finally come! Students dont have to think about school for another 2 months. That is the way it should always be Schools should continue using the traditional calendar and not a year-round schedule. There year-round schooling. _Contrary to the well-accepted belief, year-round schooling has no constructive effects on education. Most year-round schedules use the 45-15 method:45 days of school followed by 15 days off. And the breaks interrupt the learning process. Also, there is no evidence of higher test scores. Due to that. Many schools that change to year-round schedules end up switching back.Like any other facility, keeping a school open requires a great deal of money. When a school changes to a year-round schedule, the costs skyrocket. Keeping school open in the middle of summer requires air conditioning, and that adds significantly to the schools expenses. For example, a high school in Arizona had a cost increase of $ 157,000 when they switched to year-round schooling. Some schools may not be able to handle such increases, and other schools that can handle these expenses could be doing better things with the money. An important part of a childs life is summertime. With year-round schedules, students would hardly have and time to relax, They would not be able to go to most sornmer camps. One expert, Dr. Peter Scales, says,“ The biggest plus of camp is that camps help young people discover and explore their talents, interests, and values. Most schools dont satisfy all these needs. Kids who have these kinds of experiences end up being healthier and have fewer problems.” Obviously, the summer is very important to a childs learning and development. It is evident that year-round schooling is not the best choice for the school calendar. There absolutely nothing wrong with the traditional school year. Why change something that works so well? The final bell rings. Lets make sure this bell means that the “real” summer vacation has come. A. Every May they bloomed (开花) with other colorful flowers. One Summer, , with no one tending them, weeds (杂草) stole into the bushes. One evening, Dad and I went outside to play catch. As I threw the ball to him, it passed him and landed in the overgrown corner of the yard. Dad found the ball and threw it to me, then silently walked to the garage and returned with a lawn mower (割草机). He pulled and pushedUntil he had consumed every square inch, leaving no plantthan one inch. I watched in horror as he placed the machine back. Didnt he know just heartbroken when she discovered her flowers of spring bad been destroyed? But Dad knew something that I did .The following April, Mom walked toward her favorite corner of the yard. She bent over the area where the roses (cut) months before .“Veronica, look at these bushes!” Mom shouted. I thought she was joking. Surely there was nothing to look at. Puzzled, I looked down and saw hundreds of tiny red and green shoots (reach) up to kiss the sun. That year the rose bushes were the best in memory. A few years ago I planted my own roses. I ,too, am learning the of nature. There is a time for growing, a time for blooming and a time for harvesting. There is even a time for mowing down the weeds and starting over again. it is with people, who, roses, are firmly rooted in soil. We must grow, bloom and sometimes start over again when our lives have become caught up in weeds. Almost all Americans are involved with sports in some way. They may play volleyball or go swimming or skiing. They may watch football or basketball games on the high school, college, or professional level. In reality, sports have reached a point where they play too large a part in daily life. They take up too much media time, play too large a role in the raising of children, and give too much power and prestige(声望)to athletes. The overemphasis(过度强调)on sports can be seen most obviously in the vast media coverage of athletic events. It seems as if every race, meet, or match is shown on one television channel or another. Radio offers a complete list of games and a variety of talk shows. Furthermore, many daily papers such as USA Today are devoting more and more space to sports coverage, often in an attempt to attract more readers. The paper with the biggest sports section is the one people will buy. The way we raise and educate our children also illustrates our sports craziness. As early as six or seven, kids are placed in little leagues, often to play under screaming coaches and pressuring parents. Later, in high school, students who are selected by the school and by the community are not those who are best academically(学业上)but those who are best athletically. The United States may be the only country in the world where people often think of their colleges as teams first and schools second. The names Penn State, Notre Dame and Southern Cal mean “sports” to the public. For one thing, we reward them with huge salaries. In 1990, for example, baseball players averaged $350,000 a year; the average annual salary in the United States is $18,000. Besides their huge salaries, athletes receive the admiration, and sometimes the votes of the public. Why are Americans so mad about sports? Perhaps we like to see the competitiveness we experience in our daily lives acted out on playing fields. Perhaps we need heroes who can achieve clear-cut victories in the space of only an hour or two. . In addition, sports news makes up about 30 percent of local news at six and eleven. What is the main idea of the passage?_题号:06 科目:英语填空(共l0小题;每小题l分,共l0分) 阅读下面短文,在标有序号的空白处填入一个适当的词,或填入括号中单词的正确形式,并将序号及相应答案写在答题纸上。 Bridgette was going into the sixth grade in September, in April we had bought her two newborn lambs. Bridgettes plan was (raise)them during the summer and then sell them for school clothesWhen the little lambs cameBridgette had to feed them several times a dayShe even slept for a few nights with the lambs so they wouldnt crySoon the lambs became attached to Bridgette and followed her she went. When the day to sell the lambs came, however,we found that the price was disappointingA man at Woodys market offered only 100 for the lambsBridgette cried,“DadI wont haveenough for the school clothes I picked out.” I explained to the buyer why she was sad. He didnt answer, except to ask me to have my daughter talk to him. Bridgette sat beside this kindly, grayhaired gentlemanThey talked for a while and she calmed. Then the man came over to and explained what he had told her“I knew she probably (grow)attached to the lambs like my daughters to do at her age. So I asked her if it would make her feel better to know that I was not going to butcher the lambs, but I just needed them to keep down the blackberries on my farm. Then everything . She was satisfied with the sale.” Bridgette was not able to purchase all the clothes she had picked out for school that year. Im sure when she occasionally thought of her lambs living a happy life just a few miles away, she would doubt whisper to herself, “Some things are better than money.”1_ 2_ 3_ 4_ 5_6_ 7_ 8_ 9_ 10_2011年浙江高考自选综合英语题5题6题号:05 科目:英语阅读理解(分两节,共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)阅读下面短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。Its a classic image a child hiding her head in her mothers skirts when she meets a stranger, or a student becoming speechless with a red face when the teacher asks his name .The person must be shy. You may be shy yourself, But shyness isnt that common ,right? Wrong. Its just that most people are shy privately. They appear confident on the surface, and in social situations they seem well adjusted ,Only 15 to 20 percent of us fit the stereotype of the shy person someone who is obviously uncomfortable with other people. “Its a feeling of self consciousness,” says Rita Clark, a psychologist,” Shy people feel nervous and ill at ease. They may tremble, feel their hearts pounding, and have butterflies in the stomach, They worry about making a bad impression on people.” Shyness doesnt necessarily show on the surface. In fact, people sometimes think that shy people are cold and uninterested in other people when really they are just afraid to meet them. You may be surprised to know who is actually very shy, One well-known talk-show host ,whose show is watched by millions of viewers, has to plan performances down to the last detail in order to appear easy-going and confident! _“Other privately shy people include politicians ,teachers. and entertainers,” says Rita.” These people act outgoing when theyre doing their jobs, but theyre very unconfident socially. Youd be amazed how many public figures fit into this type.” Where does shyness come from? Research shows that some people are born shy. About 20 percent of babies show a strong feeling of unease when they see stranger or find themselves in unfamiliar situations .Some scientists feel that such shyness is inborn. Shy parents are more like to have shy children than outgoing parents,” Rita says, “ We know that Japanese students are much shyer than Israeli students.” If 15 to 20 percent of shyness is innate, how do other people become shy? Children may become shy when they enter school or meet new challengers. Adolescents may suffer from an identity crisis and become shy. Adults can become shy when confronted by problems like divorce or job loss. Whatever the reasons, shy people suffer from teasing and well-meaning comments like, “Has the cat got your tongue?” They are often lonely and unhappy in social situations . But scientists say there is hope for shyness. Whether you are born shy or made shy, with patience and practice, you will be able to quiet the butterflies in your stomach. A. I see and hear wrestlers day in and day out talk about how hard is to love the sport because of the demands it takes to be the best. Pressure to win (put)upon wrestles in many different ways. For example, our coach is a great coach, and I know that he cares every one of his wrestlers, but every time that I walk out on that mat, I hear his words echoing(回响)in my mind:“You are a West Lincoln wrestler; and you will win.” How can I feel pressure to win, and pain after losing, with that in mind? So if I do lose, I go home and cry because I feel that I (let)my coach and myself down. However, this doesnt last long because homework has to be done, and I have to sleep sometime, . Then there is the never-ending concern with making weigh for the next match. I remember how much fun wrestling was in eighth grade, even though I did not win a single match. I always loved practices, and I always thought they ended too quickly. I know I would wrestling if I decided to quit. I just wish I could return to the when making weight was not a problem and when losing did not matter as long as I gave 100 percent.1_ 2_ 3_ 4_ 5_6_ 7_ 8_ 9_ 10_2012年浙江高考自选综合英语题5题6题号:05 科目:英语阅读理解(分两节,共5小题:每小题2分,共10分)阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题。Some scientists believe that our brains may be hardwired(天生的)in ways that determine how happy we tend to be. Dr.Richard Davidson and his colleagues at the University of Wisconsin have found an area in the front part of the brain that controls positive feelings, optimism, and happiness._ _,Using functional MRI brain scans, they found that when mothers viewed photos of their babies. their brain activity increased greatly in this front brain region._ For generally cheerful people, happiness is associated with a personality type that emphasizes independence, self-respect,ability,and close relationships._ people seek it through fancy vacations, expensive, jeaelry,or other material things, the excitement of these quick-fix satisfactions is generally short-lived. Sustained(持续的)contentment is more likely to result from healthy relationships and meaningful accomplishments._ _Many people who survived the 9/11 disaster but were close enough to experience the destruction first-hand were shocked at the beginning. but they eventually got a clearer idea about what is truly important in their lives-family, friends and sustaining a purpose in life. Through hardship, people often become more aware of their own survival skills, emotion strenght, and power to help others as well as to be helped.Nobodylife is free of misfortune, but through hardship we can become more aware of little things we often forget to appreciate, and sometimes gain new positive ways of thinking and understandings for the future. Dr.Ronnie Janoff-Bulman and colleagues at the University of Massachusetts have studied the way extreme life events-both positive and negative-may influence an individuals ability to enjoy sustained happiness and satisfaction. They compared the well-being of two groups: lottery winners and people who bad suddenly become disabled. Though the lottery winners experienced initial excitement following their new wealth ,in the long run many were no happier than the accident victims, in part became normal ,everyday pleasures now paled next to the thrill of winning the big one .In contrast, many of the people who because disabled learned to adjust to their new disabilities , and were eventually better able to appreciate small pleasures and accomplishments ,as compared with those who became rich overning in the study. A.
