Dangerous AgeBStephen Hawkings parents lived in London where his father was undertaking research into medicine. However, London was a dangerous place during World War II and Stephens mother was sent to the safer town of Oxford where Stephen was born. The family were soon back together living in Highgate, north London, where Stephen began his schooling. In 1950 Stephens father moved to the Institute for Medical Research in Mill Hill. The family moved to St Albans so that the journey to Mill Hill was easier. Stephen attended St Albans High School for Girls ( which took boys up to the age of 10. When he was older he attended St Albans school but his father wanted him to take the scholarship examination to go to Westminster public school. However Stephen was ill at the time of the examinations and remained at St Albans school which he had attended from the age of 11. Hawking wanted to specialize in mathematics in his last couple of years at school where his mathematics teacher had inspired him to study the subject. However Hawkings father was strongly against the idea and Hawking was persuaded to make chemistry his main school subject. Part of his fathers reasoning was that he wanted Hawking to go to University College, Oxford, the College he himself had attended, and that college had no mathematics fellow. In March 1959 Hawking took the scholarship examinations with the aim of studying natural sciences at Oxford. He was awarded a scholarship, despite feeling that he had performed badly, and at University College he specialized in physics in his natural sciences degree. He only just made a First Class degree in 1962. From Oxford, Hawking moved to Cambridge to take up research in general relativity and cosmology, a difficult area for someone with only a little mathematical background. Hawking had noticed that he was becoming rather clumsy during his last year at Oxford and, when he returned home for Christmas 1962 at the end of his first term at Cambridge, his mother persuaded him to see a doctor. In early 1963 he spent two weeks having tests in hospital and motor neurone disease ( Lou Gehrigs disease) was diagnosed. His condition deteriorated quickly and the doctors predicted that he would not live long enough to complete his doctorate.60. Which of the following is wrong?A. CExperts believe that there are about 40,000 different types of jobs in the world. Choosing the right one is a difficult task. “Finding a job” is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job that they are not suited to do. “Chance” may play a more important part than “decision”. So here are a few steps to help you think about jobs. First, it is important to recognize what kind of person you are and what special qualities make you different from everyone else. The most important thing is to know your interests and skills. But the point is that there is a difference between an interest and a skill. If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, it is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse rather than a big dog, that is a skill. The best job is one that uses your skills in doing something together with your interests. As well as this, it is an advantage if you believe that a particular job is worth doing in the world. To examine your skills and abilities still further, ask yourself this question: in the following three areas skills with people, skills with information or skills with things which are your best skills? After that, the next step is research. To find out as much as possible about different kinds of work, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers. Ask your friends about the work they do. If you are interested in banking, it is better to talk to a bank clerk of twenty-four, rather than a bank manager of sixty-four. Do not ask your parents friends for information. A younger person will be able to describe a normal day at work and tell you about the interesting or boring things when you first start working. Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking! It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing. 64. The difference between “finding a job” and “choosing a job” is that _.A. finding a job is a decision while choosing a job is a chance B. finding a job is more important than choosing a jobC. a job that you find is one that is more suitable for you than one that you choose D. a job that you choose is your decision and is suitable for you while one that you find often isnt 65. What is the first step to find a job that suits you well?A. The first step is to completely know yourself and your special qualities which make you different from everyone else. B. The first step is to find out as much as possible about different kinds of work. C. The first step is to ask your friends to talk about the work they do. D. The first step is to consider your parents advice. 66. You can do all the things to research for different kinds of work except for _.A. going to the library and referring to booksB. asking your friends to give you some informationC. asking for the advice of your parents friends D. talking to a younger person who is at work for information 67. If you are interested in banking, you should talk to a bank clerk of twenty-four instead of a bank manager of sixty-four because_.A. a young bank clerk will be able to describe a special day at workB. a young bank clerk is a full-time worker and can tell you about the interesting or boring things at workC. it is easier to find a bank clerk than to find a bank managerD. a young bank clerk is easier to get along with DAn enterprising(富有进取心的) person is one who comes across a pile of waste metal and sees the making of a wonderful sculpture (雕像). An enterprising person is one who drives through an old part of a town and sees a new housing development. An enterprising person is one who sees opportunities in all areas of life. To be enterprising is to keep your eyes open and your mind active. It needs to be skilled enough, confident enough, creative enough and disciplined enough to seize opportunities that present themselves. A person with an enterprising attitude says, “Finding out what you can before action is important.” Do your homework. Do the research. Be prepared. Be resourceful. Do all you can in preparation of whats to come. Enterprising people always see the future in the present. Enterprising people always find a way to take advantage of a situat
