Knowing about the way people behave makes your reading more interesting. Another reason is usefulness. If you are going to have a conversation with native speakers of a language you learn, you need to know the sort of topics that interest them once you get past “Hello”. You need to know something about their favorite sports, the current (当前的) government of the country where the language is spoken, current fashions in clothes and outstanding national events in recent times, to mention a few. Showing that you know something about their country can lead to interesting conversations. The way people think is closely connected with language. Languages are one channel through which different cultures present their ideas both within themselves and in contact with others. The fact that a language does not have the same range of words as another language does not mean that they do not value those things as much.Whether or not your main intention to learn a language is to learn about peoples cultural backgrounds or to deal with a degree course, you will be learning about it indirectly from various sources about culture like the coursebooks, films, the news, literature or even travel brochures (手册). You could make a long list just by thinking of all the things that are important to the culture such as customs that go back centuries, architecture, traditional ceremonies, the way people relate to each other in families, the value that are important to a society, the sense of humour that people share, movies, music and art. All these cultural aspects are important to language learners if they want to get a better understanding of the language itself.21Which of the following contributes to(有助于)a conversation with native speakers?AGreeting them by saying “Hello” BTalking about their religious beliefs.CTelling them about your favorite sports. DMentioning interesting topics in their culture.22What role does a language play in the culture?AIt offers the same range of words as another language.BIt is a channel through which people present their ideas.CIt values peoples ideas and thoughts to a certain degree.DIt deals with the relationship between thoughts and language.23The last paragraph mainly deals with _.Apeoples main purpose to learn a foreign languageBthe importance to learn about cultural backgroundsCdifferent cultural sources and main cultural aspectsDhow people think and what is valued by a societyBNow many young people are traveling around the world on their own,not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone.Kristina Wegscheider from California first traveled alone when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.“It opens up your mind to new things and pushes you out of your comfort zone.” Wegscheider has visited 46 countries covering all seven continents. In foreign countries, with no one to help you read a map, look after you if you get ill, or lend you money if your wallet is stolen, it is challenging. This is what drives young people to travel alone. It is seen as character building and a chance to prove that they can make it on their own.Chris Richardson decided to leave his sales job in Australia to go traveling last year. He set up a website, The Aussie Nomad, to document his adventures. He says he wished he had traveled alone earlier. “The people you meet, the places you visit, or the things you do, everything is up to you and it forces you to grow as a person,” said the 30yearold man.Richardson describes traveling alone like “a shot in the arm”, which “makes you a more confident person that is ready to deal with anything”. He said, “The feeling of having conquered something on my own is a major part of what drives me each day when Im dealing with a difficult task.”“I walk around with my head up because I know deep down inside that nothing is impossible if you try.”The great 19th century explorer John Muir once said, “Only by going alone in silence can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.” 24Which of the following will Kristina Wegscheider agree with?ATraveling alone is a necessary experience for everyone.BIt is more meaningful to travel in foreign countries.CIt is comfortable to travel around without a friend.DTraveling abroad helps people to find new things.25Traveling alone is challenging because _.Ayou have to make things on your own Bit is hard for you to prove yourself to othersCyou can only depend on yourself whatever happens Dit will finally build your character26What can we infer about Chris Richardson?AHe started traveling alone at an early age. BHe was once shot in the arm.CHe used to work as a salesman. DHis website inspires others a lot.27What is the best title for the passage?ATravel Abroad BTravel Unaccompanied CTravel Light DTravel Wide and FarCHuman wants seem endless. When a starving man gets a meal, he begins to think about an overcoat; when a manager gets a new sports car, visions of country clubs and pleasure boats dance into view. The many wants of mankind might be regarded as making up several levels. When there is money enough to satisfy one level of wants, another level appears. The first and basic level of wants involves food. Once this want is satisfied, a second level of wants appears: clothing and some sort of shelter. By the end of World War these wants were satisfied for a great majority of Americans. Then a third level appeared. It included such items as cars and new houses.By 1957 or 1958 this third level of wants was fairly well satisfied. Then, in the late 1950s a fourth level of wants appeared: the “life-enriching” level. Rather than other levels, this level stresses mental needs for recognition, achievement and happiness. It includes a variety of goods and services, many of which could be called “luxury” items. Among them are vacation trips, the best medical care, entertainment, and fancy foods and the latest styles in clothing. On this level, a great percentage of consumer spending goes to services, while on the first three levels more is spent on goods. Will consumers raise their sights to a fifth level of wants as their income increases, or will they continue to demand luxuries and personal services on the fourth level?A fifth level probably would involve wants that can be achieved best by community action. Consumers may be spending more and more on taxes to pay government action against diseases, crime, and so on. At this stage, we may seek to ensure the health, safety and leisure to enjoy more fully the good things on the first four levels.28Altogether there are _ levels of human wants.A7B6C5D429According to the passage, man will begin to think about such needs as housing and clothing only when he has _.Asaved enough moneyBgrown dissatisfied with simple shelterCsatisfied his hungerDlearned to build houses30It can be inferred from the passage that by the end of World War most Americans _.Awere very richBlived in povertyChad the good things on the first three levelsDdid not own cars31The main concern of man on the fourth level is _.Athe more goods the betterBthe more mental satisfaction the betterCthe more expensive items the betterDthe more earnings the betterDA characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self- made man the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common labourer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or labourer of some sort. This attitude toward manual labour is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is well furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college education for the children; yet the hostess probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will wash dishes afterwards; furthermore, the dinner will not only consist of something quickly and easily made from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional man may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds and painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction team on a highway in order to pay for his education.32From Paragraph 1,we can know that in America _.Apeople tend to have a high opinion of the self-made manBpeople can always rise to the top through their own effortsCcollege professors win great respect from common workersDpeople feel painful to mention their fathers as labourers33According to the passage, the hostess cooks dinner herself mainly because _.Aservants in America are hard to get Bshe takes pride in what she can do herselfCshe can hardly afford servants Dit is easy to prepare a meal with canned food34The underlined expression “wait on table” in the second paragraph means“ _ ”.Awork in a furniture shopBkeep accounts for a barCwait to lay the tableDserve customers in a restaurant35Which of the following may serve as the best title of the passage?AA Respectable Self- made Family BAmerican Attitude Toward Manual LabourCCharacteristics of American Culture DThe Development of Manual Labour第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Taking good notes is a time-saving skill that will help you to become a better student in several ways. 36 .
