Lesson Plan for M1U2 ReadingOverviewThis is the first period of a reading lesson from Unit Two, Module One of “Advance with English”. The text to be learnt is a play about the generation gap in a family.The students are supposed to have previewed the text, so they have a general idea of the story. The language in the text is relatively easy to understand, so the focus of the class falls on helping students acquire the skill to analyze the plot, the language style and the characters of the play.In the process analyzing the above mentioned aspects, students are expected to develop their level of thinking skills. Therefore, the design of the procedures is based on Blooms taxonomy: remembering, understanding, applying, analyzing and evaluating.Role-play is a useful activity for students, especially in acting out this two-act play. By role-playing, students can experience how each of the family members feels at each stage and therefore understand the text better.ObjectivesBy the end of this class, students willl understand the storyline and the details of the text.l understand the language style of a playl be able to analyze the plot and characters of the playl learn to think about the generation gap in the familyl acquire the skill of reading and writing a playTeaching proceduresStep 1questions and answersStudents are asked to preview the text before class and note down their difficulties if they have any while reading. In class, students discuss their difficulties. This step aims to helping students understand the surface meaning of the text.Step 2Analysis of the plotStudents discuss the main events of the story with the help of a time-line. This step is intended to help students remember the major facts of the story.Step 3Analysis of the language styleStudents learn to analyze the language characteristics by exploring the text. They are expected to consider these aspects: sentence level (incomplete sentences) ; essay level (instruction); grammar level (tenses); language form (spoken)This step not just helps students understand the language style of a play, but will also help them to produce another one-act play at the end of this class.Step 4Analysis of the charactersThis step is aimed to improve students critical thinking skills. They first find out what each of the characters does, then analyze the reasons why they do so and finally try to figure out how they feel while they do this or that.The main characters are Mom, Dad, Eric and Daniel.Step 5Role-playStudents act out or role-play the play. Plays are meant for students to speak and this step helps students practice their spoken English, familiarize them with the language style and enhances their understanding.Step 6Giving commentsStudents give comments on the characters and state their reasons. This step helps students acquire the skill of comparing information and evaluating what they read. Activities include a comparison of Mom and Dad, a comparison of Eric and Daniel, and also their opinions of each of the characters in the story.Step 7Writing a one-act playStudents discuss how the story will develop towards the end. Then they add a one act to the play, following the pattern of the previous two acts. This step aims to help students discover
