文档简介

2009年北京Jamess New BicycleJames shook his money box again. Nothing! He carefully _counted_ the coins that lay on the bed. $24.52 was all that he had. The bicycle he wanted was at least $90! _How_ on earth was he going to get the _rest_ of the money? He knew that his friends all had bicycles. It was _hard_ to hang around with people when you were the only one without wheels. He thought about what he could do. There was no _point_ asking his parents, for he knew they had no money to _spare_. There was only one way to get money, and that was to _earn_ it. He would have to find a job. _But_ who would hire him and what could he do? He decided to ask Mr. Clay for advice, who usually had _ opinions _ on most things. “Well, you can start right here,” said Mr. Clay. “My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing.” That was the _ beginning _ of Jamess odd-job(零工)business. For three months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was amazed by the _variety_ of jobs that people found for him to do. He took dogs and babies for walks, cleared out cupboards, and mended books. He lost count of the _number_ of cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the _money_ increased and he knew that he would soon have _enough_ for the bicycle he longed for. The day _finally_ came when James counted his money and found $94.32. He _wasted_ no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle he wanted. He rode _proudly_ home, looking forward to showing his new bicycle to his friends. It had been hard _working_ for the money, but James knew that he valued his bicycle far more _since_ he had bought it with his own money. He had _achieved_ what he thought was impossible, and that was worth even more than the bicycle. 36. A. cleaned B. covered C. counted D. checked 37. A. How B. Why C. Who D. What 38. Having been a Straight-A student, I believed I could _take_ tough subjects and really learn something. One such course was World Literature given by Professor Jayne. I was extremely interested in the ideas he presented in class. When I took the first exam, I was shocked to find a 77, C-plus, on my test paper, for English was my best subject. I went to Professor Jayne, who listened to my arguments but remained unmoved .I decided to try harder, although I didnt know what that meant because school had always been easy for me. I read the books more carefully, but got another 77. Again, I reasoned with Professor Jayne. Again, he listened patiently but wouldnt change his mind .One more test before the final exam. One more chance to improve my grade. So I redoubled my efforts and, for the first time. learned The meaning of the word “thorough”. But my effort_ did no good and everything went as before. The last hurdle(障碍) was the final. No matter what grade I got, it wouldnt cancel three C-pluses. I might as well kiss the scholarship goodbye.I stopped working head. I felt I knew the course material as well as I ever would. The night before the final, I even treated myself to a movie. The next day I decided for once Id have fun with a test.A week later, I was surprised to find I got an A. I hurried into professor Jaynes office. He seemed_ to be expecting me. “If I gave you the As you expected, you wouldnt continue to work as hard.”I stared at him. realizing That his analysis and strategy(策略) were correct. I had worked my head off , as I had never done before.I was speechless when my course grade arrived: A-plus. It was the only A-plus given. The next year I received my scholarship. Ive always remembered Professor Jaynes lesson: you alone must set your own standard of excellence.36. A. take B. discuss C. cover D. get37. A. sought B. presented C. exchanged D. obtained38.
