Astronomers at the University of Sheffield have managed to record for the first time in the world the eerie musical harmonies produced by the magnetic field (磁场) in the outer atmosphere of the sun. They found that huge coronal loops (日冕环) that have been observed spinning away from the outer layer of the suns atmosphere vibrate (振动) like strings on a musical instrument. Using satellite pictures of these loops, which can be over 60,000 miles long, the scientists were able to recreate the sound by turning the visible vibrations into noises and speeding up the frequency so that people can hear them.Professor Robertus von FySiebenbrgen said, “It was strangely beautiful and exciting to hear these noises for the first time from such a large and powerful source. It is providing us with a new way of learning about the sun and giving us a new insight into the physics about the suns outer layers where temperatures reach millions of degrees.”The coronal loops are thought to be involved in the production of solar flares that throw magnetic energy out into space, creating a phenomenon known as space weather. When the suns activity, and thus solar flare production, increases, the resulting “space storm” can have severe results here on earth, destroying electronic equipment, overheating power networks and damaging satellites.Professor FySiebenbrgen said that studying the “music of the sun” would provide new ways of understanding and predicting solar flares before they happen.Professor FySiebenbrgens research has been shown as the University of Sheffield sets up a new project, called Project Sunshine, aimed at finding new ways to control the power of the sun. “These loops are vibrating like the strings on a guitar. Over time the waves die away and that is telling us new things about the physics in the suns atmosphere, ” he said.【文章大意】太阳其实也会“唱歌”. 1The underlined word “eerie” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by“_”Acommon BworryingCmysterious Dfamiliar解析: 选C. 根据句中for the first time in the world可推断, 能够录到太阳旳歌声应该令人感到神秘, 故答案为C. 2What can we know from Paragraph 2?AThe sun can make different kinds of music.BMusicians are inspired to create songs by the suns music.CScientists have recorded songs of coronal loops with recorders.DPeople hear the music of the sun with the help of the scientists. 根据第二段.the scientists were able to .speeding up the frequency so that people can hear them可推断, 答案为D. 3Professor FySiebenbrgen tends to think that_.Amost people cant bear the music of the sunBit is wonderful to hear the music of the sunCmusic does exist all around the universeDpeople should change the way they think of music解析: 选B. It was strangely beautiful and exciting to hear these noises. B. 4As a matter of fact, the music of the sun_.Acan help people know more about the sunBcan do great harm to the earthCis a sort of common space weatherDwill cause huge space storms解析: 选A. 根据第四段.studying the “music of the sun” would provide new ways of understanding and predicting solar flares before they happen可推断, 答案为A. 5Whats the purpose of Project Sunshine?ATo explore how to make the best use of sunlight.BTo further study why the sun produces its own music.CTo find effective ways of preventing the harm caused by sun storms.DTo learn more about how sun storms die away over time. 根据末段.aimed at finding new ways to control the power of the sun可知, 答案为C. . _One possible version: Two college students walked 400 kilometers f
