And now they couldnt wait to go shopping. At last we headed toward the checkout, pushing a cart filled with turkey and all the decorations. Then someone spotted anecessity that sent them racing a pot of chrysanthemums(菊花). It was more reasonable to use any extra money to buy food. After all, I pronounced, “You cant eat flowers” But the children insisted and placed the purple plant into the cart. An agency had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for years. Soon we were arriving at her house. Between the laughing and those purple flowers, I wasnt sure that any lesson about giving and receiving was getting through. We finally pulled up in front of a small house in the woods. A woman with a tired face came to the door to welcome us. As my little group carried the boxes of food in, she oohed and aahed - much to her visitors pleasure. When Amy put the plant on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She was wishing it was a bag of flour, I thought. The woman told the children about the animals that lived close by. I share my food with the birds, she said. We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, straight to the chrysanthemums. She put her face in the plant. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. The children were quiet. In that one brief moment, they had seen for themselves the power they possessed to make anothers life better.4. Freeloaders, they just sit around while their hard-working colleagues get things done. But might freeloaders actually be necessary for society to function efficiently? The answer could be yes - at least when it comes to fire ants and their efforts to dig nests underground. Fire ants are highly social organisms. So, Goldman and his colleagues wanted to know how individual ants knew what to do without a central leader issuing orders. To find out, Goldmans team labeled individual fire ants with paint and then watched them dig their tunnels - only wide enough for two workers. Turns out, just 30 percent of the ants did 70 percent of the labor. “I was surprised that we ended up with so few workers actually doing the work at any one time.” A quarter of the ants never even entered the tunnel. Others went inside, but left without digging out a single grain of dirt. These behaviors ensured the tunnels did not get clogged with insect traffic, which would make the construction process stop. And when the scientists removed the five hardest-working ants from the tunnel, others immediately jumped in to compensate (补偿) - with no reduction in the groups productivity. Seems that it doesnt matter which ants are working or freeloading at a given time, as long as there is some division of labor to keep the tunnels flowing smoothly. The findings are in the journal Science. The study could provide suggestions for the robotic. Imagine groups of robots sent to search for survivors from the ruins. Or nanobots(纳米机器人) coursing through our bodies to diagnose illness and deliver targeted medical treatment. Such robots will need to avoid getting jammed up in tight spaces. It might be necessary to program them so some just sit back and watch their colleagues work. 8. How do fire ants get the work done when digging tunnels? A. They all work under the order of their leaders.B. Only the strong ants do the majority of the work.C. They all cooperate together and spare no effort to do the work.D. Some work efficiently while others just sit around and do nothing.9. What does the underlined wordcloggedin Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Covered B. CrowdedC. DestroyedD. Spotted10. When the hardest-working ants were taken away by the scientists_.A. the rest of them didnt know what to doB. the leaders had to do the work by themselvesC. other ants took their place and continued to do the workD. other ants were in panic and escaped from the tunnels immediately11. According to the passage, the research findings can be applied to _.A. robot technologyB. social communicationC. underground construction D. scientific observationsDThe effect of climate change extends beyond ruining Earths environment and our physical safety. A report published this week suggests that climate change has a negative effect on our mental health, too.The study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States(PNAS), links an increase in monthly temperatures to a rise in mental health issues. The experimental evidence stems from meteorological (气象的) data paired with information collected from nearly 2 million randomly sampled residents in the United States. The data was collected over the span (跨度) of a decade. “We find that experiences with hotter temperatures and added rainfall each worsen mental health, that long-lasting warming associates with an increased popularity of mental health issues, and that exposure to tropical cyclones(热带气旋), likely to increase in frequency in the future, is linked to worsened mental health,” authors of the study stated. “These results provide added large-scale evidence to the growing link between climate change and mental health.” The report specifically focused on mental health outcomes due to the effects of environmental stress - such as temperature, rainfall, and tropical cyclones - but other climate change-related issues are likely to affect mental health as well - specifically, the stress and anxiety of knowing natural disasters could be more frequent as temperatures rise.12. From the newly-published report, we learn that the climate change may _.A. save a lot of peoples livesB. cause unbelievable disastersC. influence peoples mental healthD. greatly change peoples life styles 13. Why did the author mention “the span of a decade” in Paragraph 2?A To stress the importance of the study.B. To show that the study cost too much money.C. To explain the difficulties and hardships of the study. D. to indicate that the study is objective and believable. 14. Where can we find some specific results of the study? A. In Paragraph 1B. In Paragraph 2 C. In Paragraph 3 D. In Paragraph 415. What can we infer from the last paragraph? A. The study has its limits.B. The results of the study arent satisfactory.C. The environmental problems cant be solved.D. Mental health is determined by climate change.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余。Every family goes through its ups and downs.
