The more I go into shops and hotels, banks and post offices, railway stations, airports and the like, the more I am convinced the things are being run solely to suit the firm, the system, or the union. There seems to be an deceptive(欺骗的) new motto(座右铭) for so-called “service” organizations - Staff Before Service. How often, for example, have you queued for what seems like hours at the Post Office or the supermarket because there were not enough staff on duty to man all the service grilles(窗口) or checkout counters? Surely in these days of high unemployment it must be possible to hire cashiers and counter staff. Yet supermarkets, hinting darkly at higher prices, claim that uncovering all their cash registers at any one time would increase overheads. And the Post Office says we cannot expect all their service grilles to be occupied “at times when demand is low”.It is the same with hotels. Because waiters finish when it suits them, dining rooms close earlier or menu choice is cut short. As for us guests, we just have to put up with it. There is also the nonsense of so many friendly hotel night porters having been thrown out of their jobs in the interests of “efficiency” and replaced by coin-eating machines which offer everything from lager to laxatives(从贮藏啤酒到通便剂). Not to mention the creeping threat of the tea-making kit in your room: a kettle with a mixed collection of tea bags, plastic milk cartons and lump sugar. Who wants to wake up to a raw teabag? I do not, especially when I am paying for “service”.Can it be stopped, this worsening of service, this growing attitude that the customer is always a nuisance? I angrily hope so because it is happening, sadly, in all walks of life. Our only hope is to hammer home our anger whenever and wherever we can and, if all else fails, bring back into practice that other, older slogan - Take Our Custom(买卖) Elsewhere.1. The writer feels that nowadays a customer _.A) deserves the lowest status in societyB) is unworthy of proper considerationC) receives high quality treatmentD) is the victim of modern organizations2 The writer argues that the quality of service is changing because _.A) customers demands have greatly changedB) the staff receive more consideration than customersC) customers needs have become more complexD) the staff are less considerate than their employers3. According to the writer, long queues at counters are caused by _.A) inadequate staffing arrangementB) difficulties in hiring C) lack of cooperation between staff membersD) deliberate understaffing4. Service organizations claim that keeping all checkout counters operated would result in _A) demands by cashiers for a pay raiseB) insignificant benefits for the customersC)a rise in the price for providing serviceD) the need to purchase more expensive equipment5. The old-style hotel porters disappeared mainly because_.A) few people are willing to do that kind of jobB) machines are more reliable than human beingsC) the personal touch is no longer appreciatedD) automation has provided cheaper alternatives6.The writer suggests that a customer _.A) be patient when queuing before checkout countersB) put up with the rude manners of the staffC) try to control his temper when ill-treatedD) go to other places where DBDCDDConsumers are being confused and misled by the hodge-podge (大杂烩) of environmental claims made by household products, according to a “green labeling” study published by Consumers International Friday .Among the reports more outrageous (令人无法容忍的) findings,a German fertilizer described itself as “ earthworm friendly”, it was “non-polluting” and a British toilet paper claimed to be “environmentally friendlier”The study was written and researched by Britains National Consumer Council (NCC) for lobby group Consumer International. It was funded by the German and Dutch governments and the European Commission.“ While many good and useful claims are being made , it is clear there is a long way to go in ensuring shoppers are adequately informed about the environmental impact of products they buy,” said Consumers International director Anna Fielder .The 10-country study surveyed product packaging in Britain. Western Europe, Scandinavia and the United States. It found that products sold in Germany and the United Kingdom made the most environmental claims on average. The report focused on claims made by specific products , such as detergent (洗涤剂) insect sprays and by some garden products . It did not test the claims, to labeling guidelines set by the International Standards Organization (ISO) in September,1999.Researchers documented claims of environmental friendliness made by about 2,000 products and found many too vague or too misleading to meet ISO standards.“Many products had specially-designed labels to make them seem environmentally friendly, but in fact many of these symbols mean nothing,” said report researcher Philip Page.“Laundry detergents made the most number of claims with 158. Household cleaners were second with 145 separate claims, while paints were third on our list with 73. The high numbers show how very confusing it must be for consumers to sort the true from the misleading.” he said. The ISO labeling standards ban vague or misleading claims on product packaging, because terms such as “environmentally friendly” and “non-polluting” cannot be verified. “What we are now pushing for
