Nuclear radiation has a certain mystery about it, partly because it cannot be detected by human senses. It cant be seen or heard, or touched or tasted, even though it may be all around us. There are other things like that. For example, radio waves are all around us but we cant detect them, sense them, without a radio receiver. Similarly, we cant sense radioactivity without a radiation detector. But unlike common radio waves, nuclear radiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things. At very high levels, radiation can kill an animal or human being immediately by killing masses of cells in vital organs. But even the lowest levels can do serious damage. There is no levels of radiation that is completely safe. If the radiation does not hit anything important, the damage may not be serious. This is the case when only a few cells are hit, and if they are killed immediately. Your body will replace the dead cells with healthy ones. But if the few cells are only damaged, and if they reproduce themselves, you may be in trouble. They reproduce themselves in a deformed way. They can grow into cancer. Sometimes this does not show up for many years. This is another reason for some of the mystery about nuclear radiation. Serious damage can be done without the victim being aware at the time that damage has occurred. A person can be irradiated(辐射)and feel fine, then die for cancer five, ten, or twenty years later as a result. Or a child can be born weak as a result of radiation absorbed by its grandparents. Radiation can hurt us. We must know the truth.24. How can nuclear radiation kill an animal?A. By damaging its heart. B. By killing a few cells.C. By hitting any place in its body. D. By killing many cells in important organs.25. The word “deformed” in paragraph 3 has the similar meaning to _ .A. unnatural B. normal C. usual D. proper26. What can we infer from the passage?A. We cant detect radioactivity even with modern equipment.B. Only radiation at very high levels can kill an animal or human being.C. If a few cells are only damaged, healthy cells will take the place of dead ones.D. Radiation is harmful no matter what level it is.27. Whats the authors main purpose in writing this passage?A. Discussing the cause of cancer.B. Solving the mystery about radiation.C. Emphasizing the importance of protection of radiation.D. Introducing the nuclear power. CWhat do you do when you need to look something up? Go to the library? Open an encyclopedia(百科全书)? Click onto the Internet? These days, most people go straight to Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. But how reliable is it?Theres no denying the popularity and usefulness of Wikipedia. It attracts as many as 78 million visitors every month, and the site is available in more than 270 different languages. Its one of the most comprehensive resources available, which includes almost all details, facts and information that may be concerned. Its got much more information than an ordinary encyclopedia. The site is updated on a daily basis by thousands of people around the world. Anyone with an Internet connection can log on and edit the contents or add a new page. And you dont need any formal training.Of course, there are some controls. Wikipedia has a team of more than 1,500 administrators who check for false information. And main targets for harmful comments(such as politicians) are off-limits to public editing. But with more than 16 million articles to keep an eye on, it isnt easy. So, while Wikipedia benefits from being constantly updated with information from all over the world, its also open to “vandals”(恣意破坏公共财物者).Some of the damage is easy to notice. One person drew devil horns and a moustache on Microsoft chairman Bill Gates photo, while another edited Greek philosopher Platos biography to say he was a “Hawaiian weather man who is widely believed to have been a student of Barney the purple Dinosaur. But other things are harder to spot. The most common form of vandalism (恣意破坏公共财物罪)involves adding tiny items of false information into the biography of a famous person. Unbelievably, some of this misinformation has appeared in newspapers, with The Daily Mail, The Guardian and The Independent all having fallen victim to the dirty tricks. For example, in an article about British comedian Sir Norman Wisdom, one newspaper claimed that he co-wrote Dame Vera Lynns wartime hit Therell be bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover. He did no such thing. And in other article, it was reported that TV Theme tune composer Ronnie Hazlehurst had written the S Club 7s hit Reach again, not true. So, if youre going to use any information from Wikipedia, make sure you double-check it first.28. We can learn from the passage that _.A. because of its popularity, 78 million people from 270 countries visit Wikipedia monthly.B. updated by people around the world, the site is more likely to be damaged by hackers.C. anyone who has access to the Internet can edit any contents of Wikipedia as they like.D. the primary job of the administrators is to make sure true information is conveyed.29. Whats the writers attitude to Wikipedia?A. Critical. B. Doubtful.C. Objective. D. Positive.30. Paragraph 5 mainly tells us _.A. it is really difficult to find out tiny items of false information.B. no matter how famous the papers are, they can also be cheated.C. you can never be careful enough while searching for information.D. it was Sir Norman Wisdom who wrote the S Club 7s hit Reach.31. Whats the best title for the text? A. How to look something up in Wikipedia? B. Wikipedia has advantages and disadvantages C. Why Wikipedia is so popular? D. Wikipedia is reliable to useDIn 1800, only three percent of the worlds population lived in cities. Only one city Beijing-had a population of over a million. Most people lived in rural areas, and never saw a city in their lives. In 1900, just a hundred years later, roughly 150 million people lived in cities, and the worlds ten largest cities all had populations exceeding one million. By 2000, the number of city dwellers(居民) exceeded three billion; and in 2008, the worlds population crossed a tipping point more than half of the people on Earth lived in cities. By 2050, that could increase to over two-thirds. Clearly, humans have become an urban species. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people viewed cities negatively crowded, dirty environments full of disease and crime. They feared that as cities got bigger, living conditions would worsen. In recent decades, however, attitudes have changed. Many experts now think urbanization (城市化) is good news, offering solutions to the problems of Earths growing population.Harvard economist Edward Glaeser, author of The Victory of the Cir, is one such person. Glaeser argues that cities are very productive because “the absence of space between people” reduces the cost of transporting goods, people, and ideas. While the flow of goods has always been important to cities, what is most important today is the flow of ideas. Successful cities enable people to learn from each other easily, and attract and reward smart people with higher wages.Another urbanization supporter is environmentalist Stewart Brand. Brand believes cities help the environment because they allow half of the worlds population to live on about four percent of the land. This leaves more space for open country, such as farmland. City dwellers also have less impact per person on the environment than people in the countryside. Their roads, sewers, and power lines need fewer resources to build and operate. City apartments require less energy to heat, cool, and light. Most importantly, people in cities drive less so they produce fewer greenhouse gases per person. So its a mistake to see urbanization as evil; its a natural part of development. The challenge is how to manage the growth.32. What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?A. The history of modern cities.B. Changes taking place within cities.C. How cities have grown over time.D. Why modern cities are changing.33. How have experts attitudes towards cities changed in recent decades?A. They now view the weaknesses as strengths.B. They no longer see city-rising as attractive.C. They accept city life in spite of its problems.D. They think city-rising provides more benefits.34. Which of the following would Edward Glaeser agree with?A. Cities provide more economic opportunities.B. City people get along better with each other.C. Over-crowded cities result in problems.D. Cities limit the flow of ideas.35. According to Paragraph 4, what would be the result of moving people out of cities?A. Economic production would be reduced.B. There would be less farmland available.C. People would travel less frequently.D. House values would fall greatly. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Get a Thorough Understanding of OneselfIn all ones life time it is oneself that one spends the most time being with or dealing with. 36 When you are going upwards in life you tend to overestimate(高估) yourself.
