joining them soon He said that Inez was deaf She communicated by using sign language Mr Klein knew sign language and he decided to teach his students so that they could also communicate with Inez First they learned to sign the alphabet Some letters were hard to remember Other letters such as C were easier because the shape of the hand was similar to the shape of the letter At first some students fingers moved awkwardly but the students got better with practice The next thing they learned was finger spelling They signed one letter after another to spell a word They started with two letter words such as at and on Then they spelled longer words Mr Klein showed that just one sign could be used for a whole word To make the sign for the word fine a person spreads out the fingers on one hand touches the thumb to the chest and moves the hand outward Signing is not just done with the hands Facial expressions are also important The students learned to punctuate a question by raising their eyebrows When Inez first entered the classroom she looked nervous But the students signed Good morning Inez She gave the class a big smile and signed back What a wonderful welcome 1 We can learn from the text that in sign language A each word must be spelt one letter after another B finger spelling is one of the ways to express oneself C signing is done with the hands only D a big smile to be able to communicate with Inez freely B On the South Break hill a house suddenly blew apart and scattered in the air like something made from cards A red station sedan seemed to come out of the very heart of the explosion and began a wildly swinging race down the steep roadway towards the bridge Houses rocked and fell over beside it as it went Then a truck came from the same place and it too rocked and swung violently The roaring grew and mixed with the crackle of rifles the rattle of machine gun the blast of cannons Ben had to block his ears with the palms of the hands because they began to hurt as shock waves from the sounds battered against his ear drums Another house broke apart and tin from its roof was flung out over the valley Then over the South Break ridges tidal waves rose from the valley behind broke away and flooded down the hill No No No Ben screamed The blast exploded upwards in boiling sprays of hellfire Gas bottles blew apart within the holocaust and sent bulging bubbles of pure fire up through the smoke and flame Ben fell forward into the sand covering his face with his hands The air was burning The sky was burning The whole world was burning He forced himself to look again through the slits of his fingers The whole valley was a great molten sea of fire a rolling ocean of fire with red curling waves breaking over the houses but not pulling back like ocean waves just rolling on and on up the hill into town Ben found it hard to breathe 4 The sentence The whole world was burning suggests that Ben A started to panic B felt that all was lost C was overreacting to the situation D didn t believe what was happening 5 It is most likely that A some houses would escape the fire B Ben injured himself when he fell C Ben knew who had started the fire D the town would be destroyed by the fire 6 The author repeats the word No to highlight Ben s feeling of A abandonmentB amazement C anguishD anger 7 a house suddenly blew apart and scattered in the air like something made from cards Para 1 indicates that A the wind blew the house apart B the fire was caused by an explosion C the house was poorly built D the fire was very powerful C ROME Doctors and medical groups around the world last weekend reacted with strong opposition to the news that an Italian specialist is on the brink of cloning the first human baby Dr Severino Antinori who is the head of a hospital in Rome has been referred to in an Arab newspaper as claiming that one of his patients is eight weeks pregnant with a cloned baby Antinori refused to comment on the reports but in March 2001 he said he hoped to produce a cloned embryo 卵 for implantation within two years So far seven different kinds of mammals have already successfully cloned including sheep cats and most recently rabbits Doctors showed their doubt and were strongly opposed although they admit that human cloning would finally come true unless there was a world wide ban on the practice Professor Rudolf Jaenisch of the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said I find it astonishing that people do this where the result can be foretold that it will not be a normal baby It is using humans as guinea pigs It makes people feel sick But Ronald Green director of the Ethics institute at Darmouth College in the US said it is unlikely that an eight week old pregnancy would lead to a birth So far all cloned animals have suffered from some different serious disorders many of them dying soon after their births Doctors are opposed to human cloning because they are worried about the welfare of the cloned child if there is one There are no benefits of cloned human beings just harm said Dr Michael Wilks of the UK 8 The underlined words on the brink of in the first paragraph most probably mean A on the side ofB on the point of C in search ofD in favour of 9 Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage A Dcotor Severino Antinori is
