BDale Carnegie was an American writer and lecturer, and the developer of famous courses in selfimprovement, salesmanship, corporate training, public speaking and interpersonal skills. Born in 1888 in Maryville, Missouri, Carnegie was a poor farmers boy. His family moved to Belton, Missouri when he was a small child. In his teens, though still having to get up at 4 am every day to milk his parents cows, he managed to obtain an education at the State Teachers College in Warrensburg. His first job after college was selling correspondence courses. He moved on to selling bacon, soap, and lard(猪油)for Armour & Company. After saving $ 500, Dale Carnegie quit sales in 1911 in order to achieve a lifelong dream of becoming a lecturer. He ended up instead attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, but found little success as an actor. Later he got the idea to teach public speaking. In his first session, he suggested that students speak about something that made them angry, and discovered the technique that made speakers unafraid to address a public audience. From its beginning, the Dale Carnegie Course developed. Carnegie had made use of the average Americans desire to have more self-confidence. Perhaps one of Carnegies most successful marketing moves was to change the spelling of his last name from Carnagey to Carnegie, at a time when Andrew Carnegie was a widely recognized name. Carnegies works include Lincoln the Unknown(1932), Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business (1937), and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (1948). His greatest achievement, however, was when Simon &, Schuster published How to Win Friends and Influence People. The book was a bestseller from 1936. By the time of Carnegies death, the book had been sold five million copies in 31 languages, and there had been 450, 000 graduates of his Dale Carnegie Institute. Carnegie died at his home in New York in 1955. 24. What do you think of Dale Carnegies childhood?A. Lonely. B. Joyful. C. Difficult. D. Boring. 25. Which of the following is important for Dale Carnegie?A. Helping people to get wealthy. B. Encouraging one to trust himself. C. Teaching people speaking skills. D. Advising people to live happily. 26. Why did Dale Carnegie change his last name?A. To become more famous. B. To replace Andrew Carnegie. C. To get more help and support. D. To avoid misunderstanding. 27. Which of the following is Dale Carnegies most successful work?A. Lincoln the Unknown. B. How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. C. Public Speaking and Influencing Men in Business. D. How to Win Friends and Influence People. CTalent shows are common on Chinese television, but instead of casting starry-eyed(幻想的)hopefuls, a new series pairs young famous actors with big-name experienced professionals who are ready to teach them a lesson. The Birth of Performer first appeared on Zhejiang Satellite TV in October and has already received 330 million online views for just its first two episodes. The show has caused debate on social media about the acting skills of some stars. A flood of investment in Chinas TV and film industry has driven up paychecks for popular young attractive persons and soap opera sweethearts, but some stars have been slammed by the public for lacking professionalism and acting skills. People wonder why some actors dont take acting seriously with more and more money pouring in, Wu Tong wrote. However, he said that he had met many devoted young actors through the show, whose A-list cast of mentors(导师)includes Zhang Ziyi, who starred in the Oscar-winning kung fu epic Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; and comedy queen Song Dandan. One highlight from the first episode saw Zhang appear to become angry when she disagreed with her fellow judge-mentor Liu Ye over the performance of contestant Zheng Shuang. Do you know what acting is? Zhang questioned Liu. In response, Liu slammed his phone on the table-and then his shoe. As the audience and contestants were left shocked, Zhang turned to Liu and warmly said, Give me a hug. The two mentors explained that their quarrel was intended to show how to act out a scene of conflict-but later, netizens commented that Zhang was containing her real anger. 28. DThe third-generation hybrid rice which was developed by Yuan Longping, the father of hybrid rice, and his team underwent its first public yield monitoring from Monday to Tuesday and achieved high output. The final yield of the tested variety, G3-1S/P19, came to 1046. 3 kg per mu (about 667 square meters), based on two pieces of land in Qingzhu Village under the city of Hengyang in central Chinas Hunan Province. Some previous high-yielding hybrid rice varieties in China took 160 to even 180 days from sowing to harvesting, while the figure was shortened to around 125 days for the new variety. This is one of the most important characteristics of the third-generation hybrid rice that can reduce the use of pesticides(杀虫剂)and fertilizers(肥料), thus reducing cost and improving production efficiency. said Qian Qian, the deputy director(副所长)of the China National Rice Research Institute. Unlike the previous two generations that required a large amount of water and fertilizers as well as demanding growing conditions and technological support, the third-generation hybrid rice is easier to be grown by ordinary farmers. So the soil, altitude and climate of the test site were not ideal conditions carefully selected beforehand but were close to the rice fields of ordinary farmers. Nowadays, Chinas average yield of rice is about 500 kg per mu. Ordinary farmers can produce 600 kg to 700 kg of rice per mu by growing some excellent second-generation hybrid rice varieties. However, under the same planting conditions and environment, the yield of the third-generation hybrid rice could reach 800 kg per mu. China now feeds around 20 percent of the worlds population with less than 9 percent of the worlds farming land. At present, Yuans team has nine third-generation hybrid rice combinations under trial, which are expected to achieve commercial seed production in the following three to four years and hope to apply the technology into the research of sea rice. The third-generation hybrid rice has the comprehensive strength to promote a greener and more sustainable development(可持续发展)of Chinas rice production with higher quality and yield. 32. What feature of the new hybrid rice does Qian Qian mainly talk about?A. It has a shorter growing period. B. It achieves a higher yield. C. It saves much more farmland. D. It saves a lot more water. 33. Why is the new hybrid rice not tested in ideal areas?A. The ordinary farmers has mastered planting technology. B. The researchers want to reduce the experiment cost. C. The growing conditions the new hybrid rice needs are simple. D. The previous rice farming provides researchers with experience. 34. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?A. The differences between the three hybrid rice varieties. B. The promising future of the hybrid rice variety. C. The advanced technology of the research on hybrid rice. D. The high output of the third-generation hybrid rice. , 35. Which one could be the best title of the text?A. The Development of Chinas Rice B. The High Yield of the New Hybrid RiceC. What is 5G? 36 . At its most basic level, 5G will be used to make calls, send texts, and to simply get online. But its going to be significantly faster than previous generations, and could open the door up to a range of exciting new uses. 37 5G will use new higher radio frequencies to send out data, which carry information much faster. While these higher bands are faster, they dont carry information as far. Thats to say, smaller multiple input and output antennas(天线)will be used-promoting both signals and capacity(容量). 38 Why is it better than 4G?5G is expected to be faster than 4G, with some firms claiming it could be as much as 100 times quicker. The fastest 4G networks can deliver peak download speeds of around 300 Mbit/s. 39 . In real life, this could allow you to download a full HD film in less than 10 seconds! 40 . While this will help improve things like gaming experiences, it could also pave the way for safer self-driving cars-in which even a short delay could be life-saving. Finally, 5G will have a larger capacity, meaning networks will be able to deal with several apps at once. Generally, this should mean that devices have a faster, more stable connection. A. How does 5G work?B. How will 5G affect you?C. This means 5G will support up to 1, 000 more devices per meter than 4G. D. In comparison, 5G could offer download speeds of over 1 Gb/s. E.
