Lonnie Johnson was waiting nervously for a meeting with managers of a toy company, a yellow suitcase on his lap. Inside the suitcase was a new kind of water gun. Instead of a gun that shot a thin stream, this toy was engineered to spray water dozens of feet. “I had bought a machine to help make all of the parts myself out of different types of plastic,” Johnson says.Johnson had worked on bigger projects. He once worked for NASA(美国国家航空航天局), as a senior systems engineer. But he still worried about how his invention would go over. As an African-American in a field in which minorities were rare, he was often looked down upon, he says. “For most of my career as an engineer, I was put in environments where I was the only person of color in the room.”Johnson knew that the toy industry could be fickle(易变的). “Its like the entertainment industry. You cant predict whether a song is going to be a hit(流行) and how everyone will react to it.” When he finally stepped into the conference room, Johnson didnt say much. Instead, he opened up his suitcase and pulled out a water gun.“Does it work?”Myung Song, the company president, wanted to know. Johnson pumped(水泵吸水) the gun and pulled the trigger(扳机).Water was shot across the room and hit the far wall. There was a silence. “Wow,”Song said in surprise.“At that point, I knew I had caught their imagination.” Johnson says. “They could see what I had seen in the water gun all along.” The water gun went on to become one of the top-selling toys of the early 90s.These days, Johnson has left toys behind to concentrate on solving a more urgent problem. With scientists at Tulane and Tuskegee universities, he is working on a method for transforming heat into electricity. He hopes that his technology will improve solar-power panels(太阳能电池板)and make green energy more affordable. “My goal,”he says, “is to get this to market as soon as I can.”21According to Paragraph 2, Johnson suffered from _.AlonelinessBunemployment Crepeated failuresDracial discrimination(歧视) 22What was Songs attitude towards Johnsons invention?AWorried.BDissatisfied.CEncouraged.DInterested.23We know from the text that Johnson_.Awants to make green energy cheaper Bwill go on to sell toys in the near future Cstudies at Tulane and Tuskegee universities Dhas helped to put solar- power panels on the marketBHas this happened to you? Youre about to drift off(迷迷糊糊地睡去)to sleep when suddenly you feel like youre falling or coming down on a roller coaster(过山车).You then wake up to realize that youre safe in your bed. You may have been confused or frightened for a second or two and your heart may be beating faster. You may have also felt the muscles in your body jerk(抽搐)when this all happened. Did you ever wonder why? This falling sensation, together with a body movement known as a “sleep start”, is what doctors and scientists call a myoclonic(肌阵挛的)jerk, and it usually happens right before going into deeper stages of sleep. Heres why doctors think the falling feeling and myoclonic jerks happen. When you fall asleep, normally your body temperature goes down and your heart starts to beat just a little slower. This is because your brain signals your body to relax to prepare for sleep. When your muscles are relaxed, you go into the very first stages of sleep, but youre not sleeping too deeply yet. This brain activity may cause your larger muscles to contract(收缩)a little bit. In response, another part of your brain will make up a very quick mini-dream to go along with what is happening. You might think this would take a while, but your brain works so fast that it makes up the story almost at the same instant that your muscles jerk.During this light sleep, you can be awakened easily. People who wake up during this light sleep believe they havent fallen asleep yet. Thats why you may think that your body jerked right before you were about to fall sleep.Myoclonic jerks are a normal part of sleep. Most people have them at one time or another. But many people dont realize their muscles are jerking during night sleep if it doesnt wake them up.So the next time you dream about falling and wake up in a sweat, dont worry! Your body is just telling your muscles to relax and get some rest!24People sometimes wake up during a light sleep because _.Athey are disturbed by others.Bthey are too tired to fall asleep.Ctheir bodies are preparing for sleep.Dthey believe their lives are in danger.25What does the underlined part “what is happening” in Paragraph 4 refer to? Athe body jerk. Bthe mini-dream. Cthe slow heartbeat. Dthe falling body temperature.26The author thinks myoclonic jerks during sleep are_.AworryingBusualCAbnormal(非正常的)Duseful27It can be inferred that myoclonic jerks_.Alead to muscle diseaseBhappen in a deep sleep Care related to brain diseaseDdont always wake people upCI would like to suggest that for sixty minutes each evening, right after the early evening news, all television broadcasting be banned by law.Let us take a serious look at what the results might be if such a suggestion were accepted. Families might use the time for a real family hour. They might sit around together after dinner and actually talk to one another. It is well known that many of our problemseverything, in fact, from the generation gap(代沟)to the high divorce(离婚) rate to some forms of mental illnessesare caused at least in part by the failure to communicate. We do not tell each other what is disturbing us. The result is emotional difficulty of one kind or another. By using the quiet family hour to discuss our problems, we might get to know each other better, and to like each other better. On evenings when such talk is unnecessary, families could rediscover(再发现) more active entertainments. Freed from TV, forced to find their own activities, they might take a ride together to watch the sunset. Or they might take a walk together and see the neighborhood with fresh, new eyes. With free time and no TV, children and adults might rediscover reading. There is more entertainment in a good book than in a month of typical TV programming. Educators report that the generation growing up with television can hardly write an English sentence, even at the college level. Writing is often learned from reading. A more cultured new generation could be a product of the quiet hour.At first glance(咋一看), the idea of an hour without TV seems radical(激进的). What will parents do without the electronic baby-sitter? How will we spend the time? But its not radical at all. It has been only twenty-five years since television came to control our free time. Those of us thirty-five and older can remember childhoods without television, spent partly with radiowhich at least involved the listeners imaginationbut also with reading, learning, talking, playing games and inventing new activities. It wasnt that difficult honestly. The truth is that we had a ball(玩得开心).28The authors suggestion can help_.Apeople solve emotional problems Bdraw peoples attention to the evening newsCcollege students get along well with others Ddevelop strong neighborhood relationships29According to the text, good books _.Aoffer as much knowledge as TV doesBare more entertaining than TVCshould be made into filmsDcannot be found easily30In the authors opinion, life without TV_.Ais not good for childrens imaginationBwill be accepted by more peopleCused to be a lot of fun Dis not worth living31What would be the best title for the text?AThe future of televisionBTurning off TV: a quiet hour CSaying goodbye to televisionDEffects of television on humansDParents who feel disappointed at their teenagers failure to pay attention in class, and inability to sit quietly long enough to finish homework or plan ahead, should take solace. Their children are not being lazy or careless, according to new research. The research has found that teenagers brains continue developing far longer into adulthood than we used to think. Teens may look like young adults but their brain structure is similar to that of much younger children.“It is not always easy for teens to pay attention in class without letting their minds wander, or to ignore distractions(使人分心的事物)from their younger brothers or sisters when trying to solve a maths problem,” said Dr Iroise Dumontheil. “But its not the fault of teenagers that they cant pay attention and are easily distracted(分心). Its to do with the structure of their brains. Teens simply cant think as well as an adult.”The research showed that the brain of a teenager works less effectively than that of an adult. “We knew that we didnt realize it continued until the late 20s or early 30s,” said Dr Sarah-Jayne Blakemore, who led the research.Chaotic thought teenagers brains are containing too much grey matterthe cell bodies and connections which carry messages within the brain. As we age, the amount of grey matter in our brain reduces.“What our research has shown is that there is simply too much grey matter going on in the brains of teens,” said Blakemore. “The result is that their brain energy and resources are wasted and their decision-making process is badly influenced. Adults, on the other hand, have less grey matter. This means that the brain works far more effectively.”32The underlined word “solace” in Paragraph 1 may mean_.AnoticeBmedicineCactionDcomfort33When making decisions, _.Athe grey matter in young childrens front brain becomes active Bteens brains continue to do much needless workCpeople are not likely to be distracted until their late 30sDadults are more independent than teens34What is the effect of having too much grey matter?AIt had a bad effect on decision-making. BIt had a bad effect on the growth of teens.CIt makes us more intelligent. DIt makes us always feel disappointed.35Whats the text mainly about? ATeens have different brains from those of children.BAdults work more effectively than teens.CGrey matter makes teens unable to pay attention.DBrain energy is wasted in the brains activity.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。BedroomsBedrooms are very important. In fact, you spend one third of your life in yours. This means that you probably dont want a boring bedroom. You will not want a bedroom full of so many things that you cant get to your bed, or that is painted in your least favorite color. 36 When you are designing a bedroom and you dont know what to do with some space in the corner, you may want to see if you can fit in a desk or a small sitting area. 37 You might want to fill this space to get some more storage(储存)space or have somewhere to have some privacy.Furniture is not the only thing to consider when you design your bedroom. 38 If you arent sure what to do, just keep your walls and furniture white, and make sure that little things are also in the same style. 39 You can put up dry erase boards, chalk boards, and pictures to give your room some style. You may also want to put in a bedside table. Those are great ways to show others some of your favorite photos and lovely toys. Finally, try to find something that adds energy and life to your bedroom. 40 AYou also need to consider color.BYou could also put in a bookshelf to create space.CBesides, you might have some wall space to use up.DThis means you will need to plan out your bedroom.EDont choose a heavy, large bed for a small bedroom.FOf course, plants help a lot and they can also keep the air clean.GIf you love to read in bed, a small bedside table probably wont work.第三部分:语言知识运用(共两节,满分45分)第一节:完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)阅读下面短文,从短文后各题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。I was in a hotel ballroom in Washington, back in 2004, to cover the National Spelling Bee(全国拼字比赛).One of the 265 kids was Akshay , a 13-year-old from Colorado Springs.
