BYour house may have an effect on your figure. Experts say the way you design your home could play a role in whether you pack on the pounds or keep them off. You can make your environment work for you instead of against you. Here are some ways to turn your home into part of your diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights. Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they are in poorly lit places and so more likely to eat lots of food. If your home doesnt have enough window light, get more lamps and flood the place with brightness.Mind the colors. Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room. Warm colors like yellow make food appear more appetizing, while cold colors make us less hungry. So when its time to repaint, go blue.Dont forget the clock or the radio. People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里) per meal than those who rush through their meals. Begin keeping track of the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30 minutes. And while youre at it, actually sit down to eat. If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes. Big serving bowls and plants can easily make us fat. We eat about 22 percent more when using a 12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by 14 percent. And well pour about 30 percent more liquid into a short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.4. The text is especially helpful for those who care about _.A. their home comfortsB. their body shapeC. house buyingD. healthy diets5. A home environment in blue can help people _.A. digest food betterB. reduce food intakeC. burn more caloriesD. regain their appetites6. What are people advised to do at mealtimes?A. Eat quickly. B. Play fast musicC. Use smaller spoons.D. Turn down the lights7. What can be a suitable title for the text?A. Is Your House Making You Fat?B. Ways of Serving DinnerC. Effects of Self-ConsciousnessD. Is Your Home Environment Relaxing?CI sat with my friend in a well-known coffee shop in a neighboring town of Venice. As we enjoyed our coffee, a man called the waiter and placed his order, “Two cups of coffee, one on the wall.” We got interested and observed that he was served with one cup of coffee but he paid for two. As soon as he left, the waiter attached a piece of paper to the wall saying “A Cup of Coffee.” Similar occasions took place twice while we were there. It seemed that this gesture was quite normal at this place. However, it was something unique and confusing for us. After a few days, when we again enjoyed coffee there, a man entered. The way this man was dressed did not match the standard or the atmosphere of this coffee shop. Poverty was evident from his looks. As he seated himself, he looked at the wall and said, “One cup of coffee from the wall.” The waiter served coffee to this man with respect and dignity. The man had his coffee and left without paying. We were amazed to watch all this when the waiter took off a piece of paper from the wall and threw it in the dustbin. Now it was no surprise for us; the matter was very clear. The great respect for the needy shown by people in this town moved us to tears. Coffee is not a necessity. However, the point is that when we take pleasure in any blessing, maybe we also need to think about those people who also appreciate that specific blessing but cannot afford. Note the waiter, who gets the communication going between the affording and the needy with a smile on his face. Think about the man in need: he enters the coffee shop without having to lower his self-dignity; he has a free cup of coffee without asking or knowing about who has given this cup of coffee to him; he only looked at the wall, placed an order for himself, enjoyed his coffee and left. Besides, we need to remember the role played by the wall that reflects the generosity and care of people in this town. 8. What made the author interested as well as confused?A. The waiters making normal gestures. B. Customers buying coffee for the needy. C. The waiters attaching coffee orders on the wall. D. Customers paying for coffee and having it put on the wall. 9. The author thought the man in need was _. A. obviously poor B. not properly dressed C. not right to leave without paying D. strange to order coffee from the wall 10. In the authors opinion, coffee is _. A. necessary in our life B. a blessing some cant afford C. respect shown for the needy D. a blessing everyone should have 11. The passage is mainly concerned about _. A. learning from the waiter B. buying coffee for others C. caring more about the people in need D. analyzing the characters in the coffee shop DCell phones:Is there a cancer link?Could your cell phone give you cancer? Whether it could or not, some people are worrying about the possibility that phones, power lines and Wi-Fi could be responsible for a range of illnesses, from rashes to brain tumorsSome say there is evidence to support the growing anxietiesDavid Carpenter,a professor of environmental health sciences at the university at Albany,in New York, thinks theres a greater than 95 percent chance that power lines can cause childhood leukemia(白血病)Also theres a greater than 90 percent chance that cell phones can cause brain tumors“Its apparent now that theres a real risk,”said CarpenterBut others believe these concerns are not justifiedDr Martha Linet, head of radiation epidemiology(流行病学) at the US National Cancer Institute, has looked at the same research as Carpenter but has reached a different conclusion“I dont support warning labels for cell phones,”said Linet“We dont have the evidence that theres much danger”Studies so far suggest a weak connection between EMFs(电磁场)and illnessso weak that it might not exist at allA multinational investigation of cell phones and brain cancer,in 13 countries outside the US,has been underway for several yearsIts funded in part by the European Union,in part by a cell phone industry groupThe final report should come out later this year, but data so far dont suggest a strong link between cell phone use and cancer risk12. From the passage we can learn that some people are worried because_. Athey have evidence that the use of cell phones can lead to cancerBthey feel surprised and alarmed about cell phone useCsome experts have given a warningDcell phones are responsible for brain tumors13. Which of the following best describes the attitude of the author towards the debate?AOptimistic BObjective COppositeDCasual15The underlined word “justified” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to_Aexplained Bconfirmed Cclassified Drestricted第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。Four Ways to Be a Great RoommateHaving a roommate can be one of the best experiences in college or, easily, one of the worst. 16 Follow these tips to avoid the common mistakes that turn good roommate relationships sour.Talk things out.Communication is key. If something happens, sit down with your roommate and have a face-to-face conversation. Ive seen roommate relationships fall apart because something happens and, instead of talking to each other, the two start complaining about their roommates behind their backs. 17 Dont expect to be best friends. Some roommates become the best of friends, and some dont. Dont put pressure on yourself or your roommate, especially when you first meet. 18 And if your roommate doesnt end up being your best friend, dont worry. 19 This applies to food, clothes and anything else. If you want to keep a relationship going, show your roommate that you have respect for what is his or hers by asking first. Even if you both agree to share everything, you should still ask.Clean up after yourself. This should do without saying. Dont be lazy. Or, at least, dont bury your roommate in your clothes and garbage. Most people Ive come across in college are messy. 20 But being considerate with where you put your stuff will help you avoid conflict.A. Think twice before you help your roommates out.B. This creates nothing but awkward situations and unhappiness.C. You dont have all the time to clean your room and keep it organized.D. Ask before you take.E. It all starts with you to have a good relationship with your roommate.F. Sometimes you get stuck with someone who has tons of negative energy.G. Remember, youre trying to make a new friend, not to scare your roommate away. When I was 13 my only purpose was to become the star on our football team.
